Health Care Settings:
Health care settings are practice areas in which assessment,
care, and treatment address the physical, mental, emotional,
and social well-being of the person;
It addresses the prevention, detection, and treatment of
physical and mental disorders with the goal of enhancing the
persons bio-psycho-social and spiritual well-being.
The health care setting includes personnel who provide the
necessary services (for eample, physicians, social wor!ers,
social managers, nurses, hospital attendants etc ";
appropriate service delivery facilities (for eample, hospitals,
hospice, assisted living, medical centers, and outpatient
clinics"; and educational and environmental facilities that
wor! to help prevent disease (#ar!er, $%%&".

Interpretation
The primary mission of the social wor! profession is to enhance
human well-being and help meet the basic human needs of all
people, with particular attention to the needs of people who are
vulnerable, disenfranchised, oppressed, and living in poverty. The

'ocial managers should develop and maintain an understanding
of the history, traditions, values, and family systems of client
groups as they relate to health care and decision-ma!ing. 'ocial
managers should have a sensitivity to and awareness of the
diversity in cultural groups and integrate this !nowledge into their
practice.
