Tech 62 Fall 2014 Lecture: M 1200 1345, IS 117 Lab: W 1200 1445, Prof. Tom Brown, IS 117 E-mail: julio.garcia@sjsu.edu Web page: Julio Garcia (www.engr.sjsu.edu/jgarcia/) Dr. Julio R. Garcia Office: IS 101 Phone: (408) 924-3222 Office Hrs: M: 1400 1500 W: 1800 1900 Analog Circuits Course Description Semiconductor theory; p-n junction, bipolar transistors, JFETs and MOSFETs, optoelectronic devices. Operational amplifiers and 555 timers. Device applications: comparators, signal generators, active filters, instrumentation amplifiers, voltage regulators and power supplies. Prerequisite: Tech 60. Activity 6 hrs, 3 units. Proof of completion of course prereq: All students who are ALREADY REGISTERED in Tech 60 class must provide evidence (a printout of transcripts showing completion of prerequisite Tech 60) that you have completed course prerequisite with a minimum grade of C-. This evidence must be provided by September 8, 2014. Students who do not meet the prereqs must request permission to stay in the class in the same way that students request a permission number (see below), with the same four items in the packet. If this is not done we will do instructor drops on them to clear seats for students who need and are prepared for the course. You can show me this proof or email it to me. Permission codes: All permission codes must be provided out of the department office following screening by Dr. Seth Bates, the Dept Chair or our established departmental advisors. Students requesting a permission code must drop off a request packet that includes i. their name, ii. the class they wish to add, iii. a transcript showing they have completed the prerequisites, and iv. a four year planner showing why they need the course in Fall 2014. (This process must be followed for students who seek an exception to course prereqs, see above).
Tech 62 Analog Circuits Page 2 Student Learning Objectives Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to: a) Describe the fundamentals of semiconductor diodes, transistors, op-amps, timers, and oscillators. b) Build, identify, and analyze diode circuits, transistor circuits, op-amp circuits, active filters, and oscillators. c) Design or modify fundamental electronic circuits to meet certain requirements. Textbook Floyd, Thomas L. (2012). Electronic Devices. Conventional Current Version. 9th Ed. Upper Saddle River, NJ: Prentice Hall. Evaluation The final grade for the course will be based on the following items: Lab experiments 35% Class participation 10% Workbook (Extra Credit) 10% Weekly Quizzes 15% Midterms (2) 20% Final Exam 20%
Note: You can check your standing in the class by checking on Canvas (https://sjsu.instructure.com). Notify the instructor immediately if there is an error in any of your grades. The last day to correct any discrepancy is the last day of instruction. There will be no change in your grade after the final grade has been submitted to the university. Click on the Announcements tab on Canvas (https://sjsu.instructure.com) for updated information regarding this class.
Grading Scale The final grade will be determined according to the following scale: A+ = 96 - 100% A = 93 - 95.9% A- = 90 - 92.9% B+ = 87 - 89.9% B = 83 - 86.9% B- = 80 - 82.9% C+ = 77 - 79.9% C = 73 - 76.9% C- = 70 - 72.9% D+ = 66 - 69.9% D = 60 - 65.9% F = 0 - 59.9%
Tech 62 Analog Circuits Page 3 Methodology: To achieve an effective teaching/learning outcome the following methodology will be used:
1. You will study the assigned chapter/material before coming to lecture by watching the assigned video, reading the textbook and reviewing the PowerPoint presentation posted on Canvas (https://sjsu.instructure.com). Click on the Modules tab. 2. After reviewing the chapter materials you will answer the assigned problems at the end of the chapter. You will also answer the questions in the Workbook (Extra Credit) as you progress in the course. Some questions may require you to do some library/Internet research. The workbook is posted on Canvas.
Note: Only the eight (8) highest Weekly Quizzes scores will be considered. 3. Instructor will explain key points and answer questions from students. Instructor may add related material to enrich the course content. 4. Instructor will become more as a facilitator of learning. This means that the instructor will provide as much individual or group assistance as needed. 5. Students should work and learn in teams. This is very important to be successful in the real world. 6. Students will take Weekly Quizzes, two Midterms and the Final Exam. Weekly Quizzes, Midterms and the Final Exam will begin and end at the scheduled time. 7. There will be no makeup tests. Students who do not take a test will receive a grade of 00 on that test whatever the excuse, reason or circumstance.
Class participation Students working in groups of 2-3 will solve assigned problems from each chapter. You need to include the question and the answer. The answers should be easy to follow and understand. The whole class will check/discuss if the answers are correct before submitting them. This group discussion will reinforce and/or enhance your analog circuits' knowledge. When the Group has determined that their answers are correct then each Group will submit their answers via Canvas (https://sjsu.instructure.com). Click on the Assignments tab. Note: Make sure that all members of the group are mentioned in the Class participation reports. Failure to do this will result in a reduced grade. For example, in a group of 3 students only two students names were mentioned and the grade was 100% for these 2 students. Then they realized that one member was not included because they forgot about it. In this case, the total points obtained by the two students will be divided by 3. So 200/3 = 67; this will be the grade for all members in this particular report.
Tech 62 Analog Circuits Page 4 Extra Credit Students can earn 10% Extra Credit by answering the problems on the workbook posted on Canvas. Students working in teams from 2 to 3 members will submit their progress at least 3 times during the semester. Each Group will submit their answers via Canvas (https://sjsu.instructure.com). Click on the Assignments tab. Note: Make sure that all members of the group are mentioned in the Workbook reports.
University, College, or Department Policy Information a) Academic integrity statement (from the Office of Student Conduct and Ethical Development): Your own commitment to learning, as evidenced by your enrollment at San Jose State University, and the universitys Academic Integrity Policy requires you to be honest in all your academic course work. Faculty members are required to report all infractions to the office of Student Conduct and Ethical Development. The policy on academic integrity can be found at http://sa.sjsu.edu/student_conduct.
b) Campus policy in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act: If you need course adaptations or accommodations because of a disability, or if you need special arrangements in case the building must be evacuated, please make an appointment with me as soon as possible, or see me during office hours. Presidential Directive 97-03 requires that students with disabilities requesting accommodations must register with DRC to establish a record of their disability.
