Reversible and irreversible changes: Science integrated program summary
Phase Lesson Overview
Engage
Lesson One (double period): Whats happened?
Students explore a range of materials that have undergone physical or chemical changes and compare the materials in their original form. In groups students can suggest reasons as to how these changes have occurred and whether they think they are reversible or irreversible. Explore Lesson Two (double period): Changes through heating and cooling To provide students with shared hands-on experiences with reversible and irreversible changes when different materials are heated and cooled.
Lesson Three: Burning Candle To provide students with shared experiences with burning and how this is an irreversible change. Lesson Four and Five: Magic Mixing To provide students with shared hands-on experience that demonstrates that some solutions are reversible and others irreversible as they cannot be separated into their original materials. At Home/Outside of School Task: Search for materials that have undergone change. To provide students with shared hands-on experiences with reversible and irreversible changes. Students are required to identify materials at home and outside of school that have undergone change. They need to document these using their tablets. This is done over a one week period. Explain
Lesson Six (double period): Classifying reversible/Irreversible changes Students with the support of the teacher should represent their understandings of physical/chemical changes, and the reversibility of these changes, in relation to their observations of this phenomenon. This lesson should provide students with scientific conceptions about the topic. Lesson Seven: Changes in everyday situations Students will complete reading comprehension and research different physical and chemical changes that occur in everyday life. Elaborate Lesson Eight: Rusting nails Students plan and conduct an investigation on whether a stronger salt solution will affect the rate that a nail rusts. *This investigation will be monitored and the results recorded for 1 week. Lesson Nine: Rusting nails (continued) Students collect, analyse and interpret the results of the investigation and reflect on this process. Evaluate
Lesson Ten: Reporting about reversible/irreversible changes Students are to reflect on their knowledge about chemical and physical changes and the reversibility or irreversibility of these reactions by presenting their findings in a meaningful context and to reflect on their learning. Students use this lesson to plan a 5min PowerPoint presentation on what they have learned during this unit. Lesson Eleven: Reporting about reversible/irreversible changes Students are to reflect on their knowledge about chemical and physical changes and the reversibility or irreversibility of these reactions by presenting their findings in a meaningful context and to reflect on their learning. Students present their PowerPoint presentation and give an oral presentation along side it. Lesson Twelve: Written Test Students will demonstrate their knowledge about physical and chemical changes through a written test.
