HOUSEKEEPING

MATERIAL STORAGE
Section 2 describes actions that must be taken to help maintain a clean and
sanitary workplace. Poor housekeeping and material storage practices are a
frequent cause of workplace injuries and fires. Consequently, everyone must do
their part to maintain a clean and sanitary workplace.
General Housekeeping
ach employee is responsible for keeping their work area clean and free
from recogni!able ha!ards.
"rash and waste material must not be allowed to accumulate.
"ools, e#tension cords and supplies must be stored in their
designated location.
$loors and stairs must be kept clean, dry and free from slip, trip
and fall ha!ards.

Material Storage
Supplies must be stored in assigned areas and stacked so as not to create a
falling object ha!ard.

Compressed gas cylinders must be stored in the upright position with valve
caps in place and secured in place with a chain.

fire rating of at least '22 hour, o#ygen and fuel gas cylinders must
be separated by a least 23 feet.

Waste Disposal
5ebris and trash material must not accumulate in work areas.
6ormal garbage +e.g., paper and food waste, must be placed in an
appropriate trash container. "he following materials must not be
placed in normal trash containers*

8roken glass and other sharp objects
should not be placed directly in trash
containers with plastic bag liners.
8efore being placed in trash containers,
such items should be placed in a sealed
container.
"rash containers must be emptied on an appropriate basis.
$lammable waste +e.g., enamel paints and solvent soaked rags, must be
placed in approved flammable waste containers.
$lammable waste containers must be emptied at the end of each
shift.
0sed oil must be placed in a designated waste oil drum and disposed of in
accordance with applicable state and federal regulations.
7egulated bioha!ardous waste must be disposed of in accordance with
applicable state and federal regulations.
(sbestos&containing waste must be disposed of in accordance with
applicable state and federal regulations.
Special Note: mployers should contact their waste contractor and2or the 0nited Stated
nvironmental Protection (gency +P(, regarding the disposal of
compressed gas cylinders, bioha!ardous waste, suspected asbestos&
containing material and fluorescent light bulbs.

EPA Regulate Ha!arous Waste
Some common substances are classified as P( +nvironmental Protection
(gency, regulated ha!ardous waste. Such substances must be sent to an P(
Permitted 9a!ardous -aste 5isposal $acility. P(&regulated ha!ardous waste
includes, but is not limited to*
.ead2acid and cadmium batteries.
namel&based paints.
$lammable solvents +e.g., naphtha, mineral spirits and toluene,.
Chlorinated solvents +e.g., '&'&' trichloroethane and methylene chloride,.
7eactive materials +e.g., 9"9 chlorine,.
Corrosive materials +e.g., sulfuric acid and sodium hydro#ide,.
Polychlorinated byphenyls +PC8s,.
"o#ic materials +any chemical product that contains lead, mercury, cadmium
or any other poisonous substances,.

+P(, for specific information on the disposal of regulated ha!ardous
waste.
