Ive learned a lot about the human body in our discussions these past few weeks. For one
and a half months of studying Physiology and Anatomy, Ive already learned many things about
our body and what it is composed of. We started discussing about the language of anatomy, it
was hard at first but because the topic was so engaging, I was able to learn the different
anatomical terms and directional terms used in the medical field. Before we become a fully
developed organism, I learned that there are different levels to which we are formed. It would
start from the simplest unit which is the cell and would progress to a much more complex
structure which is the organism. While studying this topic, I realized that if we want to keep our
bodies healthy or if we want our bodies to become fully functional, the lower levels of
organization in our body should also be functioning well. If our cells and tissues are damaged, it
could lead to organ failure that could disrupt the whole system of the body. I also learned about
homeostasis which is the controlling and maintaining of the internal environment of the body in
relation to the external environment. We experience homeostatic mechanisms every day in our
lives although most of the time we are not fully aware of it. During the discussions, Ive also
learned about the cell which is the smallest unit that has the characteristic of life and its structure.
We, as living organisms, are made up of trillions of cells. Ive also realized that studying the cell
is really important because cells make up tissues that also join to form organs. If the cells fail to
function properly, the whole organ to which the cell is contained is also affected. I learned in this
course that it is through the abnormal division of cells that cancer is evident right now. Cells do
play and important role in our biological structure and make-up because if cells dont exist, all of
us wouldnt exist right now. The next lesson that weve discussed is about the tissues which is
composed of a group of cells that have similar structure and function. These tissues are abundant
in our body and can be found anywhere. Tissues vary in structure and components depending on
its function. Ive also learned what tissue repair is all about and how it works. When we were
kids, we often play and push other kids around, who slip and fall on a rough surface that causes
tissue damage. This is the part where tissue repair comes in. Since we were still kids back then,
we havent really got any idea on how tissue repair works. Tissue repair involves replacement of
dead cell with new cells, although it takes a little more time to heal, once its healed some may
form scars while others wont. The next lesson that weve discussed was about the
integumentary system which consists of the skin and accessory structures. It is important to take
care of our skin since it plays an important role in protecting the underlying tissues and muscles
of the body. And the last topic that weve discussed for the monthly grading period was the
skeletal system. Our body is composed of bones that serve as a framework and support for our
body. Although it may be considered a hard connective tissue, we should take care of it since it is
also subject to breakage and the healing process takes time since it is a very delicate process.
For just a short time, weve discussed a lot about the human body. This just proves that
we have so many to learn about the human body and the processes that occur within it.
