Archaeology and Architecture
of the Military Orders
New Studies
Edited by Mathias Piana and Christer Carlsson
Although the history of the Military Orders has been
subject of research for a long time, their material
legacy has attracted less attention. In recent years,
however, a vast range of topics concerning the Orders
building activities were studied, primarily with the
help of archaeology. This volume contains ten articles
discussing the archaeology and architecture of
buildings erected by the three major Military Orders
in different geographical regions. They cover most
countries of Western Europe and include a number
of important fortications in the Levant. These studies
break new ground in the investigation of the built
fabric of the Military Orders.

Byzantium and the Other:
Relations and Exchanges
Angeliki E. Laiou, formerly Harvard University, USA
VARIORUM COLLECTED STUDIES SERIES: CS1005
As this collection of papers worthily represents,
Angeliki Laious scholarship deserves wide dissemination
and readership for those interested in Byzantium, the
Crusades, and Mediterranean economic history. Her
insightful interaction with numerous sources both
Byzantine and otherwise coupled with her originality
of approach make for both interesting and essential
reading. The editors, Ccile Morrison and Rowan Dorin,
as well as Ashgate, deserve our gratitude for bringing
these articles together and making them accessible.
Reviews in History
Angeliki Laiou (1941-2008), one of the leading
Byzantinists of her generation, broke new ground in
the study of the social and economic history of the
Byzantine Empire. Byzantium and the Other: Relations
and Exchanges, the second of three volumes to be
published posthumously in the Variorum Collected
Studies Series, brings together studies that reect her
enduring interest in Byzantiums political, ideological,
and commercial relations with its neighbours. The
articles examine Byzantine attitudes to foreigners
and strangers within the empire, the response to the
Crusades and, more generally, to questions of justice
in the spheres of conict and colonization, and political
and commercial relations with other regional and
Mediterranean powers, in particular Venice and Genoa.

Churches, Castles and
Landscape in the Frankish East
Denys Pringle, Cardiff University, UK
VARIORUM COLLECTED STUDIES SERIES: CS1018
The sixteen studies brought together in this book are
the product of the many years that Denys Pringle has
spent investigating the material evidence for Latin
settlement in Syria and Palestine in the twelfth and
thirteenth centuries. Focusing on the building remains
of churches and castles and their relationship to
the landscape some of the themes that it explores
include: the inuence that such factors as existing
local architectural traditions and the need to
accommodate visiting pilgrims may have had on the
design of Latin churches and religious houses; the
architecture of the Cistercian houses in the kingdom
of Jerusalem and the insights that the geographical
distribution of church buildings gives into the extent
of Christian settlement in the 12th and 13th centuries.

Crusade, Religion and Trade between Latins,

Edited by Nikolaos G. Chrissis, University of Athens,
Greece and Mike Carr, British School at Rome, Italy
CRUSADES - SUBSIDIA
This volume brings together western medievalists,
Byzantinists and Ottomanists, combining recent
research in the relevant elds in order to provide
a holistic interpretation of this world of extreme
fragmentation. Although the impact of the crusades on
Byzantine history leading up to 1204 has been extensively
examined in the past, there has been little research on
the way crusading was implemented in Greece and
the Aegean after that point. Far from being limited to
crusading per se, however, the papers put it into its wider
context and examine other aspects of contact, such as
trade, interfaith relations, and geographical exploration.

Crusades Medieval Worlds
in Conict
Edited by Thomas F. Madden, James L. Naus
and Vincent Ryan, St Louis University, USA
The studies in this volume demonstrate the broad
interdisciplinary spectrum of modern crusade studies,
extending far beyond the battleeld into the conict
and occasional cooperation between the diverse
cultures and faiths of the Mediterranean. Although
the crusades were a product of medieval Europe, they
provide a backdrop against which medieval worlds can
be observed to come into both contact and collision.

Crusading and Chronicle Writing
on the Medieval Baltic Frontier
A Companion to the Chronicle of Henry of Livonia
Edited by Marek Tamm, Tallinn University, Estonia,
Linda Kaljundi, Tallinn University, Estonia, and Carsten
Selch Jensen, University of Copenhagen, Denmark
The Chronicle of Henry of Livonia was written by a
missionary priest in the early thirteenth century to
record the history of the crusades to Livonia and
Estonia in around 1186-1227. While recent years
have produced a signicant amount of new research
into Henry of Livonia, much of it has been limited to
particular historical traditions and languages. A key
objective of this book is to synthesise the current state
of research for the international scholarly audience.

Crusading as an Act of
Vengeance, 10951216
Susanna A. Throop, Ursinus College, Collegeville,
PA, USA
To date, historians of the crusades have not thoroughly
investigated the theme of crusading as an act of
vengeance, despite its frequent appearance in crusading
sources. This has led to inaccurate assumptions
regarding the nature of medieval vengeance and
the role that various cultures of vengeance played in
the crusading movement. This volume revises those
assumptions and creates new understanding of how
crusading was conceived as an act of vengeance in the
context of the changing social patterns and values of the
twelfth and early thirteenth centuries.

The Debate on the Trial
of the Templars (13071314)
Edited by Jochen Burgtorf, California State
University, USA, Paul F. Crawford, California
University of Pennsylvania, USA and
Helen J. Nicholson, Cardiff University, UK
In October 1307, all the brothers of the military-religious
order of the Temple in France were arrested on the
instructions of King Philip IV and charged with heresy
and other crimes. In 1312, Pope Clement V, at the
Council of Vienne, dissolved the order. Seven centuries
later there is still hot debate about the causes of this
notorious affair, its course, and its aftermath. This book
collects the research of both junior and senior scholars
from around the world to establish the current state
of scholarship and identify areas for new research.
Individual chapters examine the background to the
trial, its course and aspects of the trial across the whole
of Europe, from Poland and Cyprus to Ireland and
Portugal. Rather than trying to close the discussion on
the trial of the Templars, this book opens a new chapter
in the ongoing scholarly debate.

forced doctrinal and ritual assimilation. In this volume
Dr Schabel presents a more nuanced view, with new
interpretations of general trends and specic events
in the history of the Greek and Latin clergies on the

Identities and Allegiances in the
Eastern Mediterranean after 1204
Edited by Judith Herrin and Guillaume Saint-Guillain,
both at Kings College London, UK
This volume explores a complex period in Byzantine
history, the thirteenth century, from the Fourth
Crusade to the recapture of Constantinople by exiled
leaders from Nicaea. Here, specialist historians of
the Byzantine successor states of the period, and of
their key neighbours, examine the self-projection and
interactions of these states, combining military history
and diplomacy, commercial and theological contacts,
and the experiences and self-description of individuals.
This wide-ranging series of articles uses a great diversity
of sources Arabic, Armenian, Bulgarian, Greek, Latin,
Persian and Serbian to exploit the potential of the novel
methodology employed and of prosopography as an
additional historical tool of analysis.

Islands and Military Orders,
c.1291-c.1798
Edited by Emanuel Buttigieg, University of Malta
and Simon Phillips, University of Cyprus
At the heart of this volume is a concern with exploring
levels of interaction between two particular objects
of study, islands on the one hand, and military orders
on the other. 1291 was a signicant year for the main
military orders: uprooted from their foundations in
the Holy Land, the Hospitallers above all took refuge
on islands but found themselves vulnerable to those
who questioned their continued existence. Islands can
be seen to be embodiments of insularity, separate,
distinct, cut-off; Military Orders are international in
scope, nature and personnel. Therein lies the crux of
the matter: how did insular outposts and international
institutions come together to forge distinct and often
successful experiments?

Albigensians and Frederick II, and on the situation in
the Iberian Peninsula. There follow studies on relations
between crusaders and the local populations in the
Byzantine world after 1204 and Frankish Greece, and
in Cilician Armenia, while a nal pair looks at papal

centres on the growth of the legal profession. The
following papers explore the intersection of law and

Mamluks and Crusaders
Men of the Sword and Men of the Pen
Robert Irwin
VARIORUM COLLECTED STUDIES SERIES: CS955
This volume brings together a series of studies, based
mainly on medieval Arabic sources, of Middle Eastern
history and society in the late Middle Ages. Several
of these studies deal with the confrontation between
the Mamluks and the Crusaders. Others deal with
aspects of Mamluk society and culture in Egypt and
Syria from the 13th to the early 16th centuries. There
are articles on Crusader feudalism and Mamluk iqta,
the last years of the Crusader states, Mamluk faction
ghting and the size of the Mamluk army, the image
of the Crusaders in Arabic popular literature, the sex
life of the Mamluks, the ritual consumption of horse
meat by Mamluks and Mongols, the deployment of
gunpowder and rearms in the Middle East, and the
shared interest of Ibn Khaldun and al-Maqrizi in the
occult. Finally, several studies deal with questions of
historiography, in both Crusader and Mamluk studies.

Medieval and Renaissance
Famagusta
Studies in Architecture, Art and History
Edited by Michael J. K. Walsh, Nanyang Technological
University in Singapore, Peter Edbury, University of
Cardiff, UK, and Nicholas Coureas, Cyprus Research
Centre, Cyprus
There was a time seven centuries ago when Famagustas
wealth and renown could be compared to that of Venice
or Constantinople. The Cathedral of St Nicholas in the
main square of Famagusta, serving as the coronation
place for the Crusader Kings of Jerusalem after the
fall of Acre in 1291, symbolised both the sophistication
and permanence of the French society that built it.
The essays here represent a major contribution to the
study of Medieval and Renaissance Famagusta and its
surviving art and architecture and also propose a series
of strategies for preserving the citys heritage in the
future. They will be of particular interest to students and
scholars of Gothic, Byzantine and Renaissance art and
architecture, and to those of the Crusades and the Latin
East, as well as the Military Orders.

Edited by Peter W. Edbury, Cardiff University, UK
The thirty-eight papers published here represent a
selection of those delivered at the Fifth International

recent archaeological investigations at the Hospitaller
castle at al-Marqab (Syria); others examine aspects
of the history of the military orders in the Latin East

Norman Expansion
Connections, Continuities and Contrasts
Edited by Keith J. Stringer and Andrew Jotischky,
both at Lancaster University, UK
In the eleventh and twelfth centuries the Normans
had a formative inuence on the development of states
and societies in the British Isles, southern Italy and the
Levant. Their achievements still resonate powerfully
today, and represent a vital eld of historical study.
But how far did colonial elites dene themselves as
Norman, and to what extent were they categorized
as such by others? This volume serves both to
illustrate and to open up for fresh debate many of the
salient themes concerning the Norman experience
of diaspora and settlement. At the same time, it
seeks to underscore how the dynamics, character
and consequences of Norman expansion and the
connections, continuities and contrasts can better
be appreciated by taking the wider Norman world,
or worlds, as the focus for collective study.

Popular Muslim Reactions to the
Franks in the Levant, 10971291
Alex Mallett
The issue of Muslim reactions to the Franks has been
an important part of studies of both the Crusades and
Islamic history for a number of decades. This book
examines the reactions of the Muslims of the Levant to
the arrival and presence of the Franks in the crusading
period, 1097-1291. It focusses on those outside the
politico-military and religious elites arguing that it
was they, as much as the more famous Muslim rulers,
who were initiators of resistance to the Franks.

of the four surviving texts of the trial proceedings that
followed in Britain and Ireland. Detailed introductions
to each volume describe the manuscripts and how
the material was compiled and arranged, and discuss
the course of the proceedings and the value of the
evidence they contain.

Sixteenth Centuries
Christopher Tyerman, Hertford College,

VARIORUM COLLECTED STUDIES SERIES: CS1027
The crusades inuenced western European
society in the middle ages far beyond the military
campaigns themselves. Reactions and involvement
did not always follow the assumptions of ideology
or supporters, medieval or modern. In this wide
ranging collection of articles spanning thirty years,
Christopher Tyerman explores the relationships
between action and perception, ambition and
practice, propaganda and support.

appears to have achieved that goal quite impressively

Edited by Eleanor Congdon, with an introduction by
Felipe Fernndez-Armesto and James Muldoon, this

of how the Latin expansion occurred and why it was
slow and limited. The volume broaches fundamental
questions of Mediterranean history formulated by

authorities as David Abulaa, Robert I. Burns, S.J.,

The Northern-Eastern Frontiers
of Medieval Europe
The Expansion of Latin Christendom
in the Baltic Lands
Edited by Alan V. Murray, University of Leeds, UK
By the mid-twelfth century the lands on the eastern
coast of the Baltic Sea, from Finland to the frontiers
of Poland, were Catholic Europes nal frontier: a
vast, undeveloped expanse of lowlands, forest and
waters, inhabited by peoples belonging to the Finnic
and Baltic language groups. This volume presents 21
key studies (2 of them translated from German for the
rst time) on this crucial period in the development
of North-Eastern Europe, dealing with crusade and
conversion, the establishment of Western rule,
settlement and society, and the development of
towns, trade and the economy. It includes a classied
bibliography of the main works published in Western
languages since World War II together with an
introduction by the editor.

Spain, Portugal and the Atlantic
Frontier of Medieval Europe
Edited by Jos-Juan Lpez-Portillo,
Queen Mary University of London, UK
As seen from the perspective of 1492, the medieval
expansion of Latin Europe was nowhere as dramatic
or enduring as in the Iberian Peninsula and the
Atlantic. Castile and Portugal also transformed the
Atlantic Ocean from the inaccessible dead-end of
Eurasia into the most promising avenue for European
expansion. The articles collected here investigate the
extent to which the transference of Mediterranean
traditions aided this process; the characteristics of
Iberian conict that eventually led to the success of
its Christian kingdoms; and the motives for launching,
and techniques for running, the rst European
overseas empires in the Atlantic frontier. In the
process they illuminate the new identities and cultural
interactions that this expansion produced in its wake,
while the new introduction sets them in the broader
context.

CRUSADE TEXTS
IN TRANSLATION
Series Editors: Malcolm Barber, University of
Reading, UK, Peter Edbury, Cardiff University, UK,
Bernard Hamilton, University of Nottingham, UK,
Norman Housley, University of Leicester, UK
and Peter Jackson, University of Keele, UK
The crusading movement, which originated in the
11th century and lasted beyond the 16th, bequeathed
to its future historians a legacy of sources which are
unrivalled in their range and variety. These sources
document in fascinating detail the motivations and
viewpoints, military efforts and spiritual lives of the
participants in the crusades. They also narrate the
internal histories of the states and societies which
crusaders established or supported in the many regions
where they fought, as well as those of their opponents.
Some of these sources have been translated in the past
but the vast majority have been available only in their
original language. The goal of this series is to provide
a wide ranging corpus of texts, most of them translated
for the rst time, which will illuminate the history of
the crusades and the crusader-states from every angle,
including that of their principal adversaries, the Muslim
powers of the Middle East.

Albert of Aachens History of the Journey to Jerusalem
presents the story of the First Crusade (1095-1099)
and the early history of the crusader states (1099-1119)
in a two-volume set. Volume 1, The First Crusade, is a
long and richly detailed account of events well known
from the reports of participants, told from a strikingly
different perspective. Volume 2, The Early History of the
Latin States, provides a surprising level of detail about
the reign of King Baldwin I (1100-1119), especially its
earlier years and the crusading expeditions of 1101.
Susan B. Edgingtons English translation has been
widely praised, following its rst publication in the
Oxford Medieval Texts series, and is here presented
with a new introduction and updated notes and
bibliography.

The Book of Deeds of
James I of Aragon
A Translation of the Medieval Catalan Llibre dels Fets
Damian J. Smith, St Louis University, USA and
Helena Buffery, The University of Birmingham, UK
The Book of Deeds is the rst known autobiography
by a Christian king. Its author was James I of Aragon
(1213-76), known as The Conqueror, one of the
great political gures of 13th-century Europe and a
successful crusader. In his Deeds, James describes
the turbulent years of his minority, the thrilling capture
of Majorca, the methodical conquest of the kingdom
of Valencia, the reconquest of the kingdom of Murcia
after Castile had failed to hold it, and many of the
important events of his reign. While crusade and
conquest of Spanish territory from the Muslims and
Christian-Muslim relations on the frontier are central
features of the account, the Deeds are also a treasure
trove of information on the image, power and purpose
of monarchy, loyalty and bad faith in the feudal order,
the growth of national sentiment, and medieval
military tactics. At the same time, the book presents
a unique insight into the mind of a medieval ruler,
the supreme example we possess of the fears and
ambitions of a man at the very centre of events.

Caffaro, Genoa and the
Twelfth-Century Crusades
Translated by Martin Hall and Jonathan Phillips,
both at Royal Holloway, University of London, UK
This volume is the rst comprehensive English
translation, with a substantial introduction and notes,
of the writings of Caffaro of Genoa, as well as related
texts and documents on Genoa and the crusades.
The majority of early crusading historiography is
from a northern European and clerical perspective and
Caffaros voice offers an exciting departure with his
more secular and Mediterranean tone. This book adds
to our understanding of the reception of crusading
ideas in the Mediterranean and, given Genoas
prominence in the commercial world, illuminates
the complex and controversial relationship between
holy war and nancial gain.

The Chanson dAntioche
An Old French Account of the First Crusade
Translated by Susan B. Edgington, Queen Mary,
University of London, UK and Carol Sweetenham,
University of Warwick, UK
This is the rst translation into English of the
Old French Chanson dAntioche, a text which has
long intrigued historians and literary scholars.
Uniquely among epic poems, it follows closely a well-
documented historical event - the First Crusade and
appears to include substantial and genuine historical
content. The introduction assesses the history and
status of the text, while the translation is provided
with extensive annotation and with appendices on a
different manuscript tradition and on real and ctional
characters. The work provides a whole new perspective
on crusading in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries.

Crusade Texts in Translation Series
The Crusade of
Frederick Barbarossa
The History of the Expedition of the
Emperor Frederick and Related Texts
Translated by Graham A. Loud, University of Leeds, UK
This is the rst English translation of the main
contemporary accounts of the Crusade and death of
the German Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa (ruled
1152-90). The principal text here, the History of the
Expedition of the Emperor Frederick, was written soon
after the events described, and is a crucial, and much
under-used source for the Third Crusade. It narrates
the preparations and recruitment for the Crusade, and
the Crusade itself: the journey through the Balkans
and the gruelling march through Asia Minor, beset
by Turkish attack, until its arrival at Antioch on 21st
July 1190, eleven days after the emperor had drowned
while crossing a river in Cilician Armenia. The History
gives a vivid account of the sufferings of the German
army as it traversed Asia Minor and appears to be, or
to be based upon an eyewitness record, cast in the
form of (often) a daily memoir. A number of subsidiary
texts also translated illustrate and expand this main
account, and place the crusade in context.

University of Manchester, UK
The Crusade of Varna of 1443-45 was one of the
decisive events of the late Middle Ages. This book
presents the rst English translation of three important
works which provide eyewitness accounts from
the Christian and the Muslim side: an anonymous
Ottoman text on The Holy Wars of Sultan Murad;
a section of the Anciennes Chroniques dAngleterre
by the Bugundian, Jehan de Wavrin, and a German
ballad on the Crusade by Michel Beheim. These are
supplemented by a series of shorter contemporary

A History of the Normans on the First Crusade
Translated by Bernard S. Bachrach, University of

This is the rst translation into English of Ralph of
Caens Gesta Tancredi. The text provides an important
narrative of the First Crusade and its immediate
aftermath, covering the period 1096-1105. The work
as a whole has a striking Norman point of view and
contains details found in no other source, providing a
corrective to the strong northern focus of most of the

Letters from the East
Crusaders, Pilgrims and Settlers in the
12th13th Centuries
Translated by Malcolm Barber and Keith Bate,
both at University of Reading, UK
This volume presents translations of a selection of
the letters sent by crusaders and pilgrims from Asia
Minor, Syria and Palestine. There are accounts of all
the great events from the triumph of the capture of
Jerusalem in 1099 to the disasters of Hattin in 1187 and
the loss of Acre in 1291. They convey the immediacy
of circumstances which were frequently dramatic and
often life-threatening, and show us the feelings of those
who lived in and visited the crusader states. Some of
the letters translated here are famous, others hardly
known, but all offer unique insight into the minds of
those who took part in the crusading movement.

The Song of the Cathar Wars
A History of the Albigensian Crusade
Translated and edited by Janet Shirley
The Song of the Cathar Wars is the rst translation
into English of the Old Provenal Canso recounting
the events of the years 1204-1218 in Southern France.
In an effort to extirpate the Cathar heresy, Pope
Innocent III launched what is now known as the
Albigensian Crusade, but it was ercely resisted by
the lords and people of the Languedoc, if in the end
in vain. This song was written in two parts, the rst
by William of Tudela, a supporter of the crusade; the
second by an anonymous continuer, wholeheartedly in
sympathy with the southerners, although not with the
heretics themselves. It stands as a historical source of
great importance, not least because it depicts the side
that lost. The poem is also a skilful, dramatic and often
impassioned composition, evoking the brilliant world
of landed knights and the glories and bloody realities
of battle.

CRUSADES
Series Editors: Benjamin Z. Kedar, Hebrew University, Israel, Jonathan Phillips, Royal Holloway, University of London,
UK, Jonathan Riley-Smith, University of Cambridge, UK with Nikolaos G. Chrissis, University of Athens, Greece
Crusades covers seven hundred years from the First Crusade (1095-1102) to the fall of Malta (1798) and draws
together scholars working on theatres of war, their home fronts and settlements from the Baltic to Africa and
from Spain to the Near East and on theology, law, literature, art, numismatics and economic, social, political
and military history.
Ashgate publishes this journal for The Society for the Study of the Crusades and the Latin East. Because the
greatest need appears to be for more historical sources narrative, homiletic and documentary to be made
available in trustworthy editions, editorial preference is given here to the publication of texts in both European
