Ulcerative Colitis Treatment in Ayurveda- Diet and Alternative Medicine

Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammation of the large intestine (colon). The present day lifestyle is one of the major
reasons of Ulcerative colitis, especially the diet.
The colon becomes swollen, inflamed from inside after chronic consumption of dry food, irregular eating habits, prolonged
mental stress, fast food, late night sleep and too much consumption of alcohol or non-veg diet. In the colon, the waste
material is stored after digestion. According to Ayurveda, the major reason is irregular eating habits.
Eating over previously undigested food, Late night eating, eating incompatible foods together are the reasons for
inflammation in the digestive tract mainly colon. Modern methods of controlling the inflammation include using immunity
suppressing medicines like azathioprine and Salazopyrin, Corticosteroids. These have their own side effects leading to
bleeding and more ulceration as well as general weakness in the patient.
According to Ayurvedic approach, the undigested food particles lead to fermentation in the intestines leading to formation
on endotoxins i.e. AMA.. The ama is a sticky substance that clings to intestines and slowly blocks the minute channels
causing malabsorption. This leads to irritable bowel syndrome
If it is not treated in time, it can leads to ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease and similar diseases. This may also lead to
polyps in large intestine and even cancer at later stages. The bleeding is rampant in the ulcers which form in the ignored
cases and long term irritable bowel syndrome patients.
The major symptoms of Ulcerative colitis include abdominal pain, diarrhea, rectal bleeding and itching in the rectal area.
Ulcerative colitis is closely related to another condition of inflammation of the intestines called Crohn's disease. Together,
they are frequently referred to as inflammatory Bowel Disease. Ulcerative colitis and Crohn's diseases are chronic
conditions that can last years to decades. They affect approximately 500,000 to 2 million people In the United States. Men
and women are affected equally. They most commonly begin during adolescence and early adulthood, but they also can
begin during childhood and later in life.
This disease is more common in the developed world and the incidence is growing. It is less common in asian countries
and under developed nations especially africa. This makes the reason is very clear. The diet and life style is responsible
for this disease.
It is found worldwide, but is most common in the United States, England, and northern Europe. It is especially common in
people of Jewish descent. Ulcerative colitis is rarely seen in Eastern Europe, Asia, and South America, and is rare in the
black population. For unknown reasons, an increased frequency of this condition has been recently observed in
developing nations.
First degree relatives of people with ulcerative colitis have an increased lifetime risk of developing the disease, but the
overall risk remains small.
