Canadian Customs Rules
How much can you bring back to Canada
duty-free? If you are out of Canada for more
than 24 hours, you can bring home things that
cost up to $50 duty-free. You may have to show
the receipts for the things that you bought. You
can’t bring cigarettes or alcohol.
If you are out of Canada for 48 hours or more, you can bring
home goods that cost up to $200 without paying duty. This can
include up to 200 cigarettes, 1.1 litres of wine or liquor, or 24 cans of
beer.
If you are out of Canada for 7 days or more, you can bring back
goods worth $750. This can include up to 200 cigarettes, 1.1 litres of
wine or liquor or 24 cans of beer.
If you bring back more than your limit, you will have to pay
duty. How much will it cost? Usually it costs around one third of the
original price.

GIFTS
You can mail back gifts to people in Canada as often as you want. Each

Story: Steve’s Watch
When Steve Lau went to Hong Kong, he brought his gold watch
with him. He bought the watch in Hong Kong three years ago.
Before he left, he showed the watch to a customs officer. The
customs officer gave Steve a card. The card said Steve had the watch
before he left Canada. Now when Steve comes back through
Customs, he won’t have to pay duty on the watch. They will know he
didn’t buy it this trip.
