POTENTIAL IMPACTS OF THE OND 2014 RAINS

1.1 Agriculture, Fisheries, Livestock Development and Food Security Sectors
Generally enhanced rainfall is expected over most agricultural areas of the country. It is also
expected that the rainfall will be well distributed. This will impact positively on the agricultural
activities in most of the areas. Food security is expected to improve especially in the eastern
sector of Kenya during the October-ecember period. Farmers are advised to liaise with the
!inistry of "griculture# $ivestoc% and Fisheries for advice on appropriate crops to plant and the
crop management practices to underta%e.
Foliage and pasture conditions in the pastoral areas of &orthern and &orthwestern Kenya are
expected to improve only slightly but with an overall poor pasture conditions as a result of the
expected near normal to depressed rainfall performance during the season. 'astoralists should#
therefore# see% advice from the livestoc% sector to avert any loss of their animals.

1.2 Disaster Management Sector
'roblems related to water scarcity are li%ely to occur in the pastoral areas of the northwestern
and northern Kenya( and )outhern *ift +alley. ,onse-uently# there is potential for .uman-
/ildlife conflicts over limited water resources in these areas. ,lose monitoring of the situation
and contingency measures are necessary in order to ade-uately cope with the situation.
In western Kenya where near-average to above-average rainfall is expected# lightning stri%es
may occur especially in counties li%e Kisii# &yamira# Kisumu# Ka%amega and 0ungoma.
Flash floods may also occur in areas where short-lived intense rainfall is observed.
1.3 ealth Sector
iseases associated with poor sanitation such as typhoid and cholera may emerge in various
parts of the country that are expected to receive depressed rainfall. The !inistry of .ealth
should# therefore# be on the loo%out for such cases. .ospitals should be e-uipped with
necessary drugs to be able to deal with such situations as they arise.
)urveillance of highland malaria should be enhanced in regions that are expected to receive
near to above normal rainfall.
1.! "ransport and #u$lic Sa%ety Sector
Flash floods may occur in some parts of ,oast# &ortheastern# )outheastern# ,entral and
/estern *egions especially during the rainfall pea% month of &ovember. This may lead to
transport problems more so in areas where the roads become slippery impassable.

1.& 'nergy (eneration Sector
The ma1or river catchment areas for the country2s hydroelectric power generating dams are
forecasted to receive enhanced rainfall. This means that surface water run-offs may register
average to above average inflows into rivers li%e Tana and "thi. This is expected lead to
ade-uate capacity for hydroelectric power generation in the )even-For%s dams.
