WHAT, HOW, and WHY plan sheet for first 5 AP prompts:
I. What: the characters values AND the characters sacrifice/surrender/forfeit
How: a) the ways the characters sacrifice/surrender/forfeit communicates the characters values b) the ways the communication of the characters values through his/her sacrifice/surrender/forfeit communicates a larger message you have received from the novel (larger message part of the Why) (rest of)Why: reason the larger message (you have gleaned from the what and the how) is relevant and has merit
II. What: the single pivotal moment during his/her psychological or moral development when the character recognizes his place in the world How: a) the various ways the character moves towards this pivotal defining moment b) the various ways this pivotal, defining moment shapes or contributes to a larger message you receive from the novel (larger message part of the Why) (rest of) Why: reason the larger message (you have gleaned from the what and the how) is relevant and has merit
III. What: the cultural, physical, geographical surroundings of the character AND the characters psychological/moral traits How: a) the various ways these environmental surroundings shape the psychological/moral traits of the character b) the ways the influence of environment on character traits communicates a a larger message you have received from the novel as a whole ( larger message part of the Why) (rest of )Why: reason the larger message (you have gleaned from the what and the how) is relevant and has merit
IV. What: the characters view of justice (what he/she sees as just and unjust) How: a) the various ways the character shows his understanding of justice b) the various ways the character responds to justice and injustice c) the various ways the characters search for justice appears to be successful or unsuccessful (based on his/her response to and understanding of justice and injustice) Why: the characters search contributes to the larger message of the novela message you will show to have relevance and merit
V. What: an illuminating episode or moment in the novel How: the various ways this episode/moment functions as a window that opens to reveal the message/meaning of the novel (part of Why) (rest of) Why: reason the larger message (you have gleaned from the what and the how) is relevant and has merit
