It is disturbing not only because our Chrisan brothers and sisters in that place have been subjected to persecuon and threats, but also because there have been Chrisans in that part of the world for almost as long as there have been Chrisans. It is a truly sad occasion when Chrisansor any religious grouping are persecuted, threatened and killed simply because of the faith they profess.
The reason behind the rise of those who would persecute the Chrisans of Mosul are not simple however. There are a large number of interwoven and complex causes for what is happening and, while we might wish to stand in solidarity with our Chrisan brothers and sisters currently experiencing a me of trial, we should be careful to not so oversimplify things as to give in to the same atude towards others.
In other words, we should recognise that the persecutors of Chrisans (and other religious people) in Mosul do not represent the totality of the Islamic faith and, quite to the contrary, might be described as the fringe element thereof. These fringe elements exist in most major religious tradions (witness the Ku Klux Klan within Chrisanity), and we should recognise that they do not speak for the overwhelming majority of people.
Over the coming days, weeks and months, I would encourage you to pray for our Chrisan brothers and sisters who are facing persecuon in Iraq (and other places), praying that they might have the strength to face their me of trial with trust and hope in God.
I would also encourage you, where possible, to oer some praccal assistance to any eort to ease the burdens that these people will be facing as the ee their homes.

Most Rev Gerard Hanna DD, Delegate for Migrants and Refugees, Bishops Commission for Pastoral Life, in promong the 100th World Day of Migrants and Refugees on Sunday 31st August 2014, states that;
Working together for a beer world requires that countries help one another in a spirit of willingness and trust without raising insurmountable barriers. For many years, we as a naon have endorsed mulculturalism. Assimilaon has given way to integraon. Migrants are urged to maintain their cultural identy and to contribute to the social enrichment of the naon.
Bishop Hanna goes on to say
To be prophec in our world is not to be perfect or to predict the future. To be prophec is never to give up hope that things can be changed so that everyone can live beer through knowing the love of God. This is love which by its very nature must be shared with others. To be prophec is to refuse to give in to all the powers that keep people down. Above all else, it is the fact of being created in God's own image and likeness (Gen. 1:2627) and, even more so, being children of God which grounds one's personal dignity. We ourselves need to see and then enable others to see that migrants and refugees do not represent a problem to be solved but are brothers and sisters to be welcomed, respected and loved.
