Riverside Police Officer Injured While Making Domestic Battery Arrest
Female offender charged with felony aggravated battery of a police officer
On Sunday, August 31, 2014 at 10:21 p.m., Riverside Police responded to a 911 call of a domestic battery
in progress in the 100 block of Pine Avenue. When officers arrived at the apartment complex, they were
confronted by a male and female who were arguing outside. The original disturbance took place in the
unit and the hallway. It ended up in front of the building as the male offender was trying to leave the
complex. He had a duffle bag in his possession after verbally arguing with his girlfriend.
The girlfriend, later identified as Maribel Torres, did not want her boyfriend to leave and became
combative and loud outside. She entered her boyfriend's car and refused to leave it. Riverside officers
were able to talk the female into leaving the vehicle. However, as the male started to pull away, she went
after him and when the police restrained her, she began to fight with the arresting officers. The female
offender shoved an officer to the ground and continued to kick and punch the other officers. One of the
officers sustained minor cuts and bruises to his arms and chest. He was also pushed with both hands to
the ground in the chest area by the offender. The struggle continued when additional officers arrived and
the female suspect was taken into custody.
Shortly after this confrontation, a Riverside Police officer experienced chest pains. He was taken to
MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn where he was treated and released later that evening. The officer is still
currently off on injury and has not returned to work.
During the investigation, Riverside Police learned that the boyfriend no longer wanted to live with his
girlfriend and wanted to leave. His girlfriend wanted to try to work things out and attempted to prevent the
boyfriend from leaving. This is what started the situation and it escalated into a battery.
Riverside Police contacted the Cook County State's Attorney's Felony Review Unit and one charge
of felony aggravated battery of a police officer was approved and two counts of resisting arrest
were also lodged against the offender.
Arrested by Riverside Police was Maribel Torres, 32, of the 100 block of Pine Avenue in Riverside.
