Teacher Belief Statement 1

I believe the primary purpose of educating children is to give them the proper foundation
to build upon throughout life. This means that students learn where they come from, how we
have learned from these mistakes, and what opportunities they can create for the future.
Education also gives students the tools they need to become productive members in society.
My philosophy influences everything that I do in the classroom. I feel it is very important
to give the students a clear understanding of my expectations and our end goals for the year. By
doing this, they can come prepared for class and know the amount of work they will need to put
in to achieve success in the class. By including many different types of instruction, I will be able
to encompass all learning styles I also want to make students excited to learn and curious about
the world around them. I want them to tie the information the students are learning to their every
day lives. I also want the students to learn how to work in groups and accept constructive
criticism to improve themselves. I want all of my students to be actively learning and engaged;
and not just teach to the middle. My philosophy of teaching closely follows a mixture of the
progressivism and essentialism styles. Once the class is over, I hope that not only will the
students have a thorough understanding of the material, but that they will also have learned more
about themselves in the process.
There are many techniques and strategies that I will use that will work with my
philosophies. My role as a teacher is to give the students a clear understanding of what will
happen throughout the year. I will guide students through a set curriculum that has clearly
defined expectations the students will need to meet. Through my actions I will further emphasize
through instruction and how students communicate with each other the moral values of our
society. Through my experience both academically and in the United States Marine Corps, I have
learned that to excel you need a strong understanding of your character. Through my lessons I
hope to help my students further their own character development.
The role of the students is to find what they believed were their limits and surpass them.
Students need to see that through hard work they can not only improve their intellect, but also
become better people than they were before. This will happen by students realizing that what
they learn in the classroom is relevant to the world around them. I will help cultivate the
students need for learning through modeling, group discussions, and activities that correspond
with the standards. Also, the topics that will be covered, assignments, and tests will be
established in advance so that the students know what will happen throughout the class. I will
also praise, encourage, and validate their work constantly throughout the school year. I believe
building self-efficacy in students is the key to life-long learners and that the confidence the
students will gain in my classroom will carry on throughout their lives. By students taking an
interest in particular subjects, they will learn to cultivate their own desire for knowledge. I
believe that it is important for the students to know that I have an open door policy and will have
set times that they can bring any questions or concerns they have to me.
