INTRODUCTION

Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) has created a course of
Engineers and Society course (BFC 32 202) as compulsory subjects for all
students pursuing undergraduate civil engineering program at the university. A
total of more than 500 students have signed up for a study session on the subject
of semester 2 2013/2014.



BACKGROUND

Professional Talk is a program organized by Engineering and Society
UTHM. This program aims to give students exposure to the real situation of life
working field later. From this program, undergraduates can explore the world of
work that will entice them to become more competitive in achieving something
better. With this, faculty of civil and environmental engineering students rise
the university hopes to explore the essence of which was presented in an effort
to have students who are not only highly skilled but also knowledge in various
fields of engineering. The seminar was held on May 31, 2014 at the Lecture
Hall A G3 starts at 8.30 am until 11.30 am.



OBJECTIVE

1. Exposing truth regarding situation of field of work for UTHM student

2. Stimulate students' interest in improving their skills to be a competent
engineer

3. Revealing a bit of engineering knowledge and the secret of success in the
field of civil engineering

STUDENT REGISTRATION

Students are asked to register in advance and need to sign the attendance
accreditation forms following each faculty. After completion participants are
asked to sit and wait for the VIP to arrive

WELCOMING SPEECH

The seminar begins at 9:00 am which started off with opening speech by the
course lecturer of Engineer and Society, Mr. Rahmat bin Muslim. He explained
that this seminar is important to university student for going through will real
life working environment. He hopes that the students take the essence of the
seminar presented and applied in life in order to become a capable engineer.

SEMINAR SESSION

Talk 1 : Route to be a talented Engineer
Speaker : Encik Wan Nazri Bin Wan Aria

In this session, Mr. Wan Nazri bin Wan Aria has explained several key
components that should be known by student to become a competent engineer.
Among his speech, the purpose of talented engineers will lead to better
understandable oneself as an engineer and applying engineer ethics as well as
provide the concept of structural analysis. In addition, he explains on how to be
a talented engineer. According to him, a talented engineer must be able to
understand the structure of the building and making sketches in 2 -dimensional
and 3 -dimensional. Furthermore, an engineer must have the passion and desire
to be better, and applying good communication skills. Other than that, the
speaker also gave some words of wisdom to raise the morality of students in
effort to produce talented engineers which is " Yesterday is history and
tomorrow is Mysteries " and "Do not give up even to wake up When you fall
down many times "

Talk 2 : Mecca Clock Tower Working Experience
Speaker : Encik Wan Nazri Bin Wan Aria

In this next talk, the speaker, Mr. Wan Nazri Bin Wan Aria will continue to talk
about his experience during the construction of the clock tower in Mecca which
is an iconic project today. In his experience as the main engineer, he is
responsible to design the structure of the clock tower building. He emphasized
that every engineer must be proficient in terms of initial sketches that would
eventually form a stable structure of the building and is able to bear the load
required when added in specific application software. According to his
experience as the leading engineers, this project requires hard and sustained
efforts to achieve the goals he wants. In his talk, he also displays pictures during
the construction of Mecca clock tower building. He stated that, every
construction in Mecca is tested and trail by the company which park in Dubai to
ensure that each structure install meet their safety standard.

CLOSING CEREMONY

In the end of the talk, there are time for a bit of Question and Answer session
for the student and the talker to share their thought and experience. En Wan
Nazri Bin Wan Aria has answered the entire question that thrown to him which
give promising hopes for student. This session took place on a bilateral basis
with the participants who have any questions with regard to the field of civil
engineering. The seminar then ended exactly at 11.30 am and the students were
given breakfast.






CONCLUSION
In conclusion, this program Route to be a talented Engineer has shown good
process and achieves all the objectives planned by the organizer of which give
exposure to the student about the real situation challenge on working
environment while striving to become a competent engineer. Lastly, during the
talk, the student shown positive reaction and hope that this program can be
make some other time in mere future.
