We were taught about leadership of soldiers and map using as well as different
tactics on how to attack an enemy in its barracks or how to defend self during an
attack and many others. I would like to thank the President of Somalia Hassan
Sheikh Mohamud who gave us this good opportunity and I thank the people of
Somalia and I call them upon to maintain peace because the army alone cannot
maintain security if the people do not support them. The people are the central

STORY

62 officers of the Somali National Army have returned home after completing a
14-months Officer Cadet course in Uganda.

The training was conducted under bi-lateral arrangement between Uganda,
which is part of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) and the Federal
Government of Somalia.

The course covered different areas including field craft, military law, counter
insurgency and military intelligence, among others.
Speaking after the troops arrival in Mogadishu, Major Gen. Nathan Mugisha
Ugandas Ambassador to Somalia said the training had run smoothly and
challenged the soldiers to contribute positively to their national army.

They have obtained good grades and knowledge which they are going to use to
build the Somali National Army. We believe in this way, we can contribute
towards capacity building of this young national army, he said.

The Commander of SNA Infantry Gen. Abdulahi Osman Ogie said the soldiers will
head straight into camp at the Jazeera training centre before being deployed.

We are grateful to our brothers who have trained them for us and they were
taught the functions of an officer. Now we are taking them to Jazeera camp and in
the next three months, they will take a refresher course in discipline and good
conduct of a soldier. After that, they will be distributed and everyone will be
given tasks and responsibilities.

The trainees say the program was enriching and expressed commitment to work
towards improving security in their country.

We were taught about leadership of soldiers and map using as well as different
tactics on how to attack an enemy in its barracks or how to defend self during an
attack and many others. I would like to thank the President of Somalia Hassan
Sheikh Mohamud who gave us this good opportunity and I thank the people of
Somalia and I call them upon to maintain peace, because the army alone cannot
maintain security if the people do not support them. The people are the central
pillar of the country. I call upon the people to catch the enemy and bandits who
are trying to rob their property, said 2
nd
Lt. Mohamed Abdul Aziz, SNA trainee.

The Somali National Army is undergoing massive reconstruction efforts led by
the African Union Mission in Somalia, having suffered disintegration during the
two decades of conflict.
