Target Audience
Grade Five Science and Health Pupils Subject Matter/Learning Competencies Speed or Velocity ? PELC (RBEC) Science and Health VI Unit IV-Energy- Third Grading Period 10. Diferentiate Speed from Velocity 10.1 Measure the speed of an object in motion 10.2 Identify the specifc direction of a moving object 10.3 Measure the velocity of a moving object Duration 40 minutes Objectives After doing all the activities, the pupils will be able to: Measure the speed and velocity of a moving object. Identify the specifc direction of a moving object. Diferentiate speed from velocity.- 3 Preparation Provide pupils with enough background knowledge and hands on activities regarding the proper use of the stopwatch. Prepare in advance the appropriate place for the outdoor activity . Measure a 20 meter distance on the ground ahead of time. This is done in order to save time. Procedure Divide the class into groups of four to fve members. Each group will choose its speaker , manager and director. Let the managers get the activity sheets and the materials needed. Remind them to return the materials as soon as they are through with the activity. Remind pupils to follow strictly the time allotment. The time frame for each activity is 10 minutes. Publishing and reporting of group responses will be given 5 minutes. Let the pupils record the results of the activities on the Record Sheet. Publish the data gathered and report the fndings. Teaching Hints Allow pupils to use the calculator for computation of speed. Provide a battery operated toy car for this activity. Time allotment should be followed strictly for each activity so that the activity will be fnished on time. After all groups have reported, confrm the answers given and supply any additional information needed. 2 CONTENTS
Evaluation The success of this material will be measured by: Completion of the activities on time. Active participation of the members of each group in doing the activities. Pupils ability to measure the speed and velocity of a moving object. Pupils ability to diferentiate speed from velocity. Book: Coronel,C ., et,al.,Science and Health Textbook for Grade Six Science for Active Learning. 1999 PELC (RBEC) Science and Health V LESSON PLAN IN SCIENCE AND HEALTH GRADE FIVE Objective After doing all the activities, the Grade VI pupils will be able to diferentiate speed from velocity Subject Matter Speed or Velocity, Science for Active Learning, pp. 226 - 230 Science Ideas: 1. Speed is distance traveled per unit of time. 2. Velocity is the speed of an object moving in a particular direction. Processes stressed: Observing, measuring, inferring, explaining Materials: stopwatch activity sheet meter stick battery-operated toy car tape measure record sheet calculator
Learning Activities Review/Checking of Assignment Allow a member of each group to read or discuss their answers to the assignment.
Lesson Proper Motivation Ask: How far is your home from school? How do you get to school? Do you walk, ride, or run? If you walk, how long does it take you to get to school? Presentation/Development Divide pupils into small groups of three to four members and let the manager get the activity sheet and other materials. Pupils perform the diferent activities simultaneously. Publish and record the data gathered. Ask: What are the things to be considered when we talk about speed? (Distance traveled and time spent) How can we get the running and the walking speed of an object? How can we get the velocity of a moving object? What are the things to be considered when we talk about velocity? (Emphasize speed and specifc direction.) Confrm pupils responses and give additional information needed.
Say: Speed is written as, meters/second orm/sec. Velocity is written asmeters/second north orm/sec.n. Generalization Ask: What is the diference between speed and velocity? Expected answers Speed is the distance traveled per unit of time. Velocity is the speed of an object moving on a particular direction. Application
Average and slow learners: (To be done orally) Directions: Tell which refer to speed and which refer to velocity.
1. 30 km/hour 5. 13km/hour south 2. 18 km/ hour north 6. 270 m/min 3. 4m/sec east 7. 19m/sec west 4. 16 km /hour 8. 5m/sec Evaluation Average and Slow learners Directions: State which refers to speed and which refers to velocity. On the space provided for write S if it refers to speed and write V, if it refers to velocity. 1. A ball rolls 50 cm in 23 sec. 2. A runner covers a distance of 100m in 10 sec. 3.A car is going at an average speed of 50 km/ hour. 4. A tricycle travels at the rate of 5 km/h covering a distance of 10 km North. 5.Joanne walks 1000 meters to school in 15 minutes. 6. Matt drives his motorcycle at an average speed of 15 km/hr. 7. The snail covers a distance of 5 meters in an hour. 8. Patrick ran after the dog, 5 m/sec East. Assignment
Write fve situations wherein speed is measured and another fve wherein velocity is measured. ACTIVITY A WALKING SPEED AND VELOCITY Objective Measure the speed and velocity of an object in motion Materials for each group
Stopwatch Meter stick/tape measure Calculator Activity sheet Record sheet Procedure
1. Measure 20 meters on the ground and mark the starting and the fnish line. 2. Let a classmate walk the distance at the signal GO. Use a stopwatch to fnd how long it takes. Take note of the specifc direction. Have one more to walk the distance. 3. Divide the distance walked by the time spent to fnd the walking speed. Use a calculator. 4. Find the velocity, which is the speed of the object moving on a particular direction. 5. Record the data gathered on the record sheet and prepare a short report about your fndings. TIME FRAME: 10 MINUTES ACTIVITY B RUNNING SPEED AND VELOCITY Objective Measure the speed and velocity of an object in motion Materials for each group Stopwatch Meter stick/ tape measure Calculator Activity sheet Record sheet Procedure 1. Measure 20 meters on the ground and mark the starting and the fnish line. 2. Let a classmate run the distance at the signal GO Use a stopwatch to fnd how long it takes.Take note of the specifc direction. Have one more to run the distance. 3. Divide the distance ran, by the time spent, to fnd the running speed. Use a calculator. 4. Find the velocity, which is the speed of the object moving on a particular direction. 5. Record the data gathered on the record sheet and prepare a short report about your fndings. TIME FRAME: 10 MINUTES ACTIVITY C HOW FAST IT GOES? Objective
Measure the speed and velocity of an object in motion Materials for each group Stopwatch Meter stick/tape measure Calculator Battery operated toy car Activity sheet Record sheet Procedure
1. Mark 8 meters on the foor. 2. Let a toy car run from 0 to 8 meters. 3. Use a stopwatch to fnd out how long this takes. Take note of the specifc direction. 4. Divide the distance traveled by the time spent to fnd the speed. Find the velocity which is the speed of the object moving on a specifc or particular direction. 5.
