Social responsibility is a vital part of who we are, where we live, and what actions we
take that affect others and ourselves. In this paper we will examine social responsibility in the
form of volunteering in the Charlotte, North Carolina. Within Charlotte, there is a smaller inner
circle of University area in which the residents live, work, socialize and attend school. These
residents understand the importance of community and volunteering.
As our team researched the University Area in Charlotte North Carolina we discovered
that volunteering is a big part of this community. This demographic location has a variety of
residents with wide ranges in age. By having a university as the centralizing culture in this area
it brings a lot of students to this location. The University of Charlotte North Carolina offers
many volunteer programs through the school and it helps out the community any way it can
(UNC Charlotte, 2012). Although the primary work in this location is being a student, the type
of work for residents varies. Charlotte is home to big bank corporations and utility companies
and a lot of the residents work with these industries. A lot of these corporations have great
volunteer programs and offer services throughout the area. Volunteering is big with the
university and the people living in this location. So the type of work in this community varies,
but everyone living in this location makes it a priority to give back.
We discussed that social responsibility is the belief that people, government and
organizations have a general responsibility to the greater welfare of the society. When
examining the University Area as a community of Charlotte North Carolina, we were surprised
when we researched the many opportunities that are out there for members of the community.

volunteerism and direct community service to meet Charlotte's most critical needs. This is done
by strengthening the community and enriches lives while mobilizing a diverse corps of citizens
in direct and volunteer services. A part of a national effort by Hands-on Network; its primary
goal is to increase academic achievement in elementary, middle, and high school (Hands on
Charlotte, 2012). We believe that the responsibilities of the community include volunteering
services because it shows the heart of citizenship. Diversity, partnerships and collaborations of
others is the innovation to drive results for a better place to live in.
The people who volunteer are the people who have a vision to see a change for the
greater good for someone else. These are the people that know, that giving back will affords
someone else a vast opportunity in life. As a team, we discussed that social responsibility is the
belief that people, government and organizations have a general responsibility to the greater
welfare of the society. Statistics show that people who volunteer are more likely to have a
stronger educational background and are financially established (Volunteering in America;
2011). If you think about this logically, it makes sense!
When examining the University Area as a community of Charlotte North Carolina. We were
surprised when we researched how many opportunities that is out there for members of the
community. Volunteers are usually found in community base programs. For example: churches,
schools, election polls and non-profit organizations for instance; Hands on Charlotte is a non-
profit organization that allows volunteers from the age of 18 and up to participates in a variety of
projects monthly. As a part of a national effort by Hands-on Network; its primary goal is to
increase academic achievement in elementary, middle, and high school (Hands on Charlotte,
2012). RAIN based at the First United Methodist Church located at 501 N. Tryon Street (RAIN
Inc; 2012), which are two of many to be found in this community. These organizations visions

are simple; their mission is to promote volunteerism and direct community service. These
agencies offer food, clothing, medical care and shelter resource and services to meet Charlottes
most critical needs. This is done by strengthening the community and enriches lives while
mobilizing a diverse corps of citizens in direct and volunteer services restoring hope to the lost or
shut in.
Volunteering globally has increased in numbers tremendously worldwide when traumatic
disasters happen. For instance, New Orleans (Hurricane Katrina), Volunteering aboard has also
become a cosmic outreach that is on a raise more and more in number daily (Japan, The
Tsunami). These are prime example of how people across the world share the some of the same
characteristics ethically and morally, wanting to help in any way possible to make a difference
for someone else.
Volunteering services is the responsibility of the community; it shows the heart of
citizenship. Diversity, partnerships and collaborations of others is the innovation to drive results
for a better place to live in.
