Greetings from Cynthia Hutchison
Healing Touch Program Director
I took my
first Healing Touch class in 1992 when students were still receiving a folder with dozens of loose pages of hand-made
drawings as educational handouts. Since those early days of the program, I have enjoyed watching and participating in
the professional growth, growing acceptance in health care and consumer circles and increased media coverage of
Healing Touch. I literally have met thousands of people who have been positively touched by Healing Touch: students,
patients, families, administrators, health care practitioners, spiritual communities, and of course, skeptics!
The skeptics were more challenging to talk with years ago because the research was sparse and what was out there was
criticized for not being the much acclaimed randomized, double-blinded and controlled studies that scientific circles strive
for. By the time I took off my hat as Director of Research in early 2000, I had spoken with quite a few skeptics. Over time,
I learned that until someone is ready to be open to a new way of understanding life, no matter what I said or did, Healing
Touch would be "hokey" or "too woo woo" for some. Gradually, I learned to just respectfully speak my truth in a sentence
or two and let it go, trusting that perhaps I had planted a seed for later fruition.
It is now 2006, and we have a respectful collection of Healing Touch research, along with studies in related areas of sci-
ence, that support our work. Although hard-core skeptics continue to exist, they have less ground to stand on as the sci-
entific underpinnings of energy medicine gradually uncover the unbreakable bond between science and spirit and the
reality of the existence of ENERGY! Research increasingly supports that human beings can facilitate mind-body-spirit
healing in themselves and others through the understanding and practice of energetic principles, such as those taught in
the Healing Touch Program.
It is with pleasure that I introduce this first issue of ENERGY and the articles written by our many contributors who will
tell you how Healing Touch has changed their lives in an undeniable way. Thanks to all our writers testifying to the power
of Healing Touch! Get yourself a cup of tea and cozy up to your computer for a wonderful read with our first
issue of ENERGY Magazine!
Welcome to Energy Magazine! I am so happy to be part of this inaugural
issue! This new endeavor represents another stride in the growth of energy
medicine in general, and specifically for the Healing Touch Program.

Kimberly Garcia RN, CHTP/I, is a Certified Healing Touch Practitioner/Instructor. She is currently the
Healing Touch Coordinator at St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa, Florida. Her article Healing Through Touch
in the Acute Care Setting talks about her inspiring journey from bedside nursing care on the neuology
unit, to providing Healing Touch treatments and education throughout the hospital.
Melissa Elley shares some of her personal experiences with Healing Touch and how it has
affected family and strangers alike in her article My Journey into Healing Touch. Melissa has
just completed Level 4 and views her mentorship year as an incredible experience.
Rauni Prittinen King, RN, BSN, HNC, CHTP/I is the Co-Founder and Director of
Programs and Planning at the Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine in La Jolla, California.
Her article Healing Touch at the Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine gives you an inside
look at how forward thinking hospitals are integrating Healing Touch and other mind/body
therapies into western medicine.
Deborah Larrimore, RN, CHTP/I has spent over thirty years developing a deep aware-
ness of the profound effects of human touch. Her work has been, and continues to be,
deeply inspired by the Healing Touch curriculum and program. Her poem entitled A Healing
Touch Story explores her journey into Healing Touch.
Sharon Robbins, RN, HNC, CHTP has a private practice in Del Mar, California. She is
currently Chair of the Healing Touch International Business Council Committee. Her article
What Can The Business Council Do For You? gives an introduction to Healing Touch
International and its many benefits.
Janet was a practicing nurse
for 43 years. Her early work was with
the U.S. Navy, then as emergency
room nurse, and then home health
care nurse. Her genuine love of
patients and the nurse connection
began emerging as she developed
her "healing touch" methods. She
shared her methods by teaching con-
tinuing education classes for nurses
at Red Rocks Community College in
Lakewood, Colorado. Her research,
with, and her teaching of, energy
medicine within her private practice
earned her the Holistic Nurse of the
Year Award from the American
Holistic Nurses Association in 1988.
In 1989, Janet formally creat-
ed Healing Touch as an energy medi-
cine program. It began in 1990 as the
Healing Touch certificate program
sponsored through the American
Holistic Nurses Association (AHNA).
This coincided with the providership
of continuing education for nurses by
the Colorado Nurses Association. In
1993, Healing Touch was certified by
AHNA. That same year, Janet formed
the Colorado Center for Healing
Touch, dedicated to bringing Healing
Touch to millions of people through-
out the world.
In 1996, Healing Touch
International, Inc., was founded by
Janet as a non-profit educational and
membership organization. Its pur-
pose is to administer the Healing
Touch certi fi cati on process for
Practi ti oners and Instructors.
Janet felt a separate organization
was necessary so we were not
certifying ourselves.
In 1997, the Healing Touch
International Foundation, Inc. (HTI)
was founded by Janet as a non-prof-
it charitable organization. Janet's
intention for the Healing Touch
International Foundation was to
receive and distribute funds to assist,
encourage and advance the philoso-
phy, objectives and techniques of

Healing Touch therapy. This is prima-
rily accomplished through funding of
grants for research and humanitarian
projects around the world.
Within a few short years
Janet Mentgen revolutionized the
medical model to include a clinical
approach to energy based therapy.
Her legacy lives on through Certified
Instructors and Certified Practitioners
and thousands of students who are
bringing a holistic approach to heal-
ing. Healing Touch emphasizes com-
passionate, heart-centered care in
which the provider and client are
equal partners in facilitating whole-
ness. Healing Touch restores harmo-
ny, energy and balance within the
human energy system and supports
the self-healing process of becoming
whole in body, mind, emotion and
spirit. Healing Touch complements
conventional health care and is used
in collaboration with other approach-
es to health and healing.
Due to the extraordinary suc-
cess of the program, the company
changed its name to the Healing
Touch Program, in June of 2005.
This change recognizes the global
expansion of Healing Touch in hospi-
tals, hospices, clinics, schools of
nursing, long term care centers and
communi ti es throughout North
America, Central America, South
America, Europe, Africa, Australia,
Asia, and New Zealand.
To ensure the continued
growth of the Healing Touch
Program, Janet transferred the
ownership of the Healing Touch
Program to her children; Bill, Lynn
and Lisa in May of 2005. On
September 10, at the 2005 the

Conference, held in Breckenridge,
Colorado, Janet announced her
retirement and the transfer of leader-
ship to her children.
Securing her legacy, Janet died on

How HT Changed My Life
TM
How is it that I can tell my story, without telling yours?
For what sets us apart
are mere markers on the road.
We all journey homeward
to the Divine.
Healing Touch becomes a vehicle
And most find
That once on board
The direction of life changes.
One could choose to step off
But most dont
Because there has been a spark ignited
That seems to fuel them onward.
The spark soon becomes a Light
And the Light a beacon
Which illuminates their path.
Suddenly there are others
Who are passionately awakened
A whole community of familiar Beings
A new circle of family.
A family that recognizes anothers face
And gives honor to their passage.
They see ones core essence
And call it Holy.
Together we study Healing Touch.
And a rhythm innately begins to beat
It could be the sound of my heart
or
It could be the sound of yours.
Our differences fade
And our similarities mold.
We begin to understand
And allow the life force of the Divine to move through us
We are vessels
We are conduits
In which love and goodwill flow through.
We learn to become a Healing Presence
To others in their journey
And as we do
We find we are becoming a Healing Presence
to ourselves
and our own journey.
Because ultimatelythey are the same.
How is it that I can tell my story, without telling yours?
Sharing lifes journey, while honoring the Light within. For we are the same.

Hospital Integration
TM
by Kimberly Garcia RN, CHTP/I
An equal blessing is that I am gifted to be able to accomplish
this in an acute care clinical setting, where I can educate and
communicate with physicians and other healthcare providers,
while remaining informed of current medical trends and prac-
tices. An article was published in The Tampa Bay Metro enti-
tled Quality Care, Tampa Bays Medical Breakthroughs and
Advancements. It depicted many local healthcare facilities
and their technological advancements and contributions to
healthcare in the area. I am very happy to report the article
included a full-page story about our Healing Touch program.
The initial question that people with an interest in a
hospital-based Healing Touch program asks me is, How in
the world did you make that happen? My initial immediate
response is an echo of my prior responses to this repetitive
question, I didnt make it happen, I held my vision for a pro-
gram and allowed it to manifest when the universal timing was
supportive. In fact, I chuckle now when I review my Healing
Touch certification packet and read my declaration, I am very
passionate about incorporating a Healing Touch program with-
in St. Josephs Hospital. That declaration was written in
February of 2003, sixteen months prior to being offered a
Healing Touch Pilot Program. I have realized the manifesting
power behind my declaration. I didnt declare, I would like
to or I hope to. I declared, I am passionate about
incorporating a Healing Touch Program within St. Josephs
Hospital. I acted as if the Healing Touch Program was already
a reality. Ultimately, the success of our Healing Touch program
is the result of a carefully laid foundation, nurtured with loving
patience over time.
My journey with St. Josephs Hospital began in
February of 2001 when I returned to Florida from my birth state
We all have a story to tell. It is
my hope that by briefly sharing
the story of my journey with
Healing Touch, you will be
inspired to embrace and nurture
your own story. I am very blessed that the
true purpose for my life is to spread "Healing Light
Worldwide". Professionally, my full-time position at
St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa, Florida, is now as a
Healing Touch Practitioner and educator, with the
official title of Healing Touch Coordinator. My work-
days are spent providing healing touch treatments
to inpatients, in addition to educating patients and
their family members, medical staff, non-clinical
ancillary staff and community members regarding
Healing Touch and it's use in our daily personal and
professional lives.
of Indiana, for what I thought was going
to be a brief sabbatical to learn Tai Chi
from an Asian Tai Chi Master. My belief
at that time was that I would be moving
to the mountains of North Carolina to
open a Healing Touch practice. After a
short, less than satisfying stint with
agency nursing to sustain myself
financially, I accepted a position at St.
Josephs Hospital on a busy neurology
unit. I had never envisioned myself
working in Neurology as a specialty, and
I surprised myself by choosing to do so.
It is my belief that sometimes our choic-
es are for a higher purpose than we can
yet embrace. I quickly realized that I
chose this area to be my playground
for doing the Healing Touch work in an
institutional setting. The fact that I was
also working with a Nurse Manager who
was open to my exploration of Healing
Touch was also greatly supportive.
Once on the unit, I started doing Healing
Touch on my patients. The other nurses
started noticing the positive effect the
Healing Touch interventions were hav-
ing with my patients and started
approaching me to work on their
patients. I also became aware that
occasionally physicians would be on
the unit with various physical com-
plaints. My co-workers would say to
them, Oh, you need Kimberly to do
some Healing Touch work on you.
Initially they would respond, Nah, thats
okay! Eventually they responded,
Well, what the heck, it wont hurt any-
thing. As the outcomes to the physi-
cians mini-treatments were always
positive, I realized these were my divine
opportunities to raise awareness and
educate others about Healing Touch. By
representing the work confidently, I
started gaining medical staff support.
After all, experiencing Healing Touch
work is often the greatest educator of
all. I represented Healing Touch in my
daily nursing care for three years at St.
Joes. I spoke with physicians and co-
workers at every wise opportunity.
Offers to do Healing Touch ses-
sions for staff during National Nurses
Week every year were always well
received. This led to increased interest
by staff members to attend Healing
Touch educational in-services. I also
participated in commnity health fairs at
every opportunity.
My great opportunity for visibil-
ity came when our media department
pitched the Healing Touch work I was
doing with my patients to the local
media. In June of 2004 ABC news
wanted to do a feature story. I
approached our senior management
with glee in my voice, Okay, what do

you want me to tell the media? Two
days prior to their arrival for filming, and
during National Nurses Week, I was
informed by senior management,
We have a surprise for you, we are
going to pull you out of bedside care
for three months so you can com-
plete a Pilot Healing Touch Program,
then we will see what happens.
That was just the beginning of my
wonderful journey. My position has
evolved from a staff nurse providing
bedside care to that of the Healing
Touch Coordinator.
Healing Touch is now done
on a referral basis from physicians,
nurses, patients and/or family mem-
bers. The data compiled
from our Pi l ot Program
revealed increased patient
satisfaction, increased team
member satisfaction and a
decrease in hospital length
of stay-days in some cases.
The average pain score on a
scale of zero to ten, in over
140 patients, decreased
from an average of seven
pre- Healing Touch treat-
ments to two post-Healing
Touch treatments.
In less than two
years since our pilot pro-
gram began over 900
patient treatments have
been provided and over 200
participants have attended the
weekend Healing Touch classes, 15
of whom are in their year mentorship
for certification.
We are in the final stages of
developing of our Volunteer Healing
Touch Program. We have been
blessed to be part of seven feature
news stories, along with other local
media coverage, through local radio,
magazine and newspapers. We have
held two successful annual celebra-
tions for Healing Touch International
Day as well. Our Healing Touch
Policy and procedure is listed on the
Baycare Intranet, and includes the
Basic Healing Touch Sequence.
Recently a room manifested
to be dedicated to Healing Touch
treatments for our team members
who work so hard to provide com-
passionate care to our patients.
Everyone associated with the St.
Josephs Healing Touch program
recognizes the blessings we share in
having such a program to assist our
patients in their healing processes.
I share this with you to
inspire you to embrace your vision
for Healing Touch at your facility.
My message to you in manifesting
Healing Touch as a path and not
just a technique you know and do,
is for you to embody the qualities of
confidence, trust and
patience. It is essential for you
to have confidence in your
ability to effectively communi-
cate about Healing Touch.
You must trust in your power-
ful presence as a compas-
sionate, heart-centered facil-
itator of healing, and also in
the Healing Touch work itself.
The only way for your Healing
Touch vision to manifest is to
allow it the time necessary to
grow through patience and
perseverance.
A beautiful Hawaiian heal-
er, whom I was gifted to share
time with recently, summarized
the essence of my message to you so
beautifully when she imparted her core
belief about life. She shared, Life is all
about Right Place, Right Time and Right
Be-ing, So, I encourage you to be your
heart-centered, compassionate pres-
ence, do the Healing Touch work, and
hang on for the ride!

The Scri pps Center for
Integrative Medicine blends outstanding
medical care with evidence-based
complementary therapies to support
health and healing. Our physicians eval-
uate patients from a holistic perspective
and prescribe a customized care-plan
that addresses the body, mind and spir-
it. Most of the services are provided on
an outpatient basis and work hand-in-
hand with conventional care. Our model
is based on the holistic model of patient
care; that the emotional, mental and
spiritual aspects of healing cannot be
separated from the physical.
In conventional care, the nurse
and other healthcare providers are
trained to focus primarily on physical
problems and symptoms. This informa-
tion is frequently not enough to get to
the cause of the problem. This health-
care paradigm limits the providers abil-
ity to spend time with the patient in
order to address the deeper meaning of
a patients symptoms. A major contribu-
tor to the lack of a holistic approach in
conventional medicine is the lack of
holistic training in medical and nursing
schools. Integrative Medicine blends
the best of conventional and evidence-
based complementary therapies.
Healing Touch has been part of
nursing care at Scripps since 1993, and
Healing Touch training started in 1994.
Over 70 workshops and more than

More than 300 cardiac surgery
patients were surveyed for outcomes on
pain and anxiety before and after Healing
Touch and Guided Imagery Intervention.
On average, both pain and anxiety scores
dropped fifty percent. With the proper
guidance and support, patients are able to
make major lifestyle changes that can
improve their quality and quantity of life.
The complementary provider, such as a
Healing Touch practitioner, is able to assist
patients beyond their physical needs.
More importantly, Healing Touch and a
holistic approach to health care is healing
to the patient as well as to the provider
delivering the care. It is a heart centered,
compassionate approach where the intent
to heal is the main ingredient.

Touch began in August 2005, shortly
after my 50th celebration of life. My
parents, John and Marion Elley had
returned from Mums checkup at Tate
Cancer Center, Baltimore, Maryland.
Though we received news that her
cancer, Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma,
apparently came out of remission, we
were to learn that several paths were
still to open up.
We expected she might have
to go through chemo again. Now Dad
was looking at major surgery for a
paralyzed vocal chord.
I went looking for Debbie
Russell, RN, CHTP, to provide Healing
Touch treatments for my parents.
Debbies path had crossed mine a
year earlier. Our reconnection
unlocked the door for my journey to
begin into Healing Touch - a Level 1
class was scheduled in ten days!
Mums recovery from her
second round of chemo for Non-
Hodgkin Lymphoma has been truly
amazing. We were able to do Healing
Touch techniques during each infu-
sion session and as a result she
experienced only one bout of nausea
at home, and it was minimal. She will
be 82 in June.
My dads surgery was a suc-
cess and his doctor at The University
of Maryland accepted my practicing
Healing Touch on my father. Dad
received a one-hour chakra connec-
tion prior to going in to surgery. The
PACU permitted me to do energy
work, so I used the Magnetic Clearing
technique, 5-10 minutes every hour
for four hours after the procedure.
The hospital has since contacted him
to release his phenomenal recovery
on their patient recovery page.
Healing Touch was a dynamic assis-
tance in his full recovery. He will be 83
in October.
My parents, John and
Marion, look forward with anticipation
to their 60th anniversary, this
October.
Doors continue to open as I
learn to share the light with my whole
family. Beyond working closely with
my parents, opportunities to practice
Healing Touch continue to present
themselves. For example, I was
returning home from a Level 4 class in
late February this year when on the
way home I was delayed by an acci-
dent. I was about 2 miles from home
when the fifth car in front of me hit a
pole while traveling in excess of 100
mph. The car split in half, killing 2
young men, both 17. A young
woman, also 17, was transported to
shock trauma at the U of MD,
Baltimore. She came home 36 hours
later. We had connected in spirit at
the scene and physically met again
three days later at her home. After
three sessions of Healing Touch, 70+

days after the accident. She returned to
school on the 11th day!
My Healing Touch friends tell
me my place was to BE at the scene
in the moment. I do not question that.
I feel the wave that I am riding as I
move forward on this journey. One
friend said to me that I am on a tsunami!
I do believe the energy I have shared could
leave others in awe.
Never have I been in a

allow positive energy to flow, and
to be a vessel of both self-healing

The Business Council Vision
Statement is to support the Healing
Touch community members who are
committed to creating or enhancing
their Healing Touch business prac-
tice, by providing education and
resources.
The Busi ness Counci l
Committee presently consists of 13
members, spanni ng 11 states.
Although we set an agenda for the
year to accomplish a number of
goals, the Committee remains open
for new members and suggestions.
At the annual HTI conference
the Business Council Committee
offers a workshop and questionnaires
are collected from attendees in order
to gather insight into what (YOU) the
membership would like the Business
Council to offer. Together with the
questi onnai res, the Busi ness
Council Committee has embarked
on building a rich resource of busi-
ness guidance and reference material
for those seeking insight on how to
start and/or grow a Healing Touch
business.
We continue to expand our
resource book, which contains busi-
ness articles written by Committee
members that have been published in
the HTI newsletter. The book also
contains bibliographies and the con-
tents of the 2002 through 2005 HTI
conference workshops put on by the
Business Council. Tapes of those
workshops are also available. The
resource book is available for review
at the yearly HTI conferences. Copies
of its content can be requested.
The HTI website (www.heal-
ingtouch.net) can provide you with
business related articles and other
helpful resources. We have useful
business forms, ideas for marketing,
mentor contacts, opportunities for
group advertising, the latest develop-
ments in state and national legisla-
tion, updates on third party insurance
reimbursement, plus tips for self-care
and prosperity consciousness.
Do you want to start your
Healing Touch practice/business but
dont know where to begin? Start by
formulating YOUR vision statement.
Need some inspiration? Go to the HTI
website, find the link for Committees
and Councils, click on Business
Council and check out our bibliogra-
phy. You can also go to the library or

Youll be surprised by how much
direction, motivation, and know
After over 30 years as an entrepreneur and
business owner, I can honestly say that
there are as many ways to run a business,
as there are personalities. However, Ive also learned
there are some basics that can make or break your business.
The HTI Business Council of Healing Touch International, Inc,
(HTI), the membership organization for Healing Touch students
and practitioners, is committed to formulating resources to help
acquaint you with those basics. The Business Council Committee
is still young and our materials are works in progress, but weve
already begun to offer services and you can look forward to more.

how youll find there.
Al though the Busi ness
Council can offer resources and guid-
ance, ultimately YOU need to make
the commitment, create the vision,
accept the responsibility, focus, take
action, just do it, and have faith.
Remember, there are no failures, only
opportunities to learn. Flexibility,
resilience, persistence and determi-
nation are more important than
genius. Stretch your imagination!
Keep going forward!!!
Come to the 2006 HTI
Conference in Breckenridge (over
Labor Day weekend) where we will
have our annual Business Council
Committee meeting. Everyone is wel-
come to join us in networking, sharing
business ideas, and getting your ques-
tions addressed. Explore becoming

love to see you at our workshop, too!
