TOP SIGHTS
So youve come all this way, and
cant decide what to do rst? Flick
through this section rst, then check
the weather if its a perfect day, do
the smart thing and catch a ride up the
cableway to the top of Table Mountain
(page 30) for a birds-eye view of the
city youre about to explore. We also
suggest Kirstenbosch (page 32) and a
day trip to Cape Point in a circular drive
around the peninsula (page 35). Sail the
seas to Robben Island or shop away
at the V&A Waterfront (page 36) or in
the City Centre (page 42), but whatever
you do, make time for the Mother Citys
cultural heritage (page 48).

CAPE TOWN
DAY-TRIP
PLANNER
Cape Town is an easy self-drive
destination so weve devised four
different routes and areas to explore,
each packed with insider tips on
what not to miss and suggested
restaurants to visit. Keep the guide
with you all the time: this section
has contact details and websites for
the local Visitor Information Centres.
Each SELF-DRIVE is written in a
logical order to save you time. Our
WINE ROUTES are extensive and
so we advise that you consult each
regions website (found at the end of
each route description) and decide
on your personal focus for tasting
before you set out. We also know
that keeping kids happy on day
drives is essential so there are plenty
of child-friendly ideas.
BEYOND
CAPE TOWN
WINELANDS &
ROUTE 62
Its so easy to get to our world-
renowned Winelands. Even a
half day will give you enough
time to taste wine and see the
historical towns of Stellenbosch
or Franschhoek. Self-drivers who
want to do the longest wine route in
the country should keep going until
they get onto Route 62, a region of
unsurpassed beauty.

UPFRONT/ IMPORTANT INFORMATION
LEARN THE LANGUAGE
There has been an increase in foreign-
language visitors to Cape Town over
the past decade, with many opting
to stay longer. As a result, there
has been a growth of institutions
where one can learn English as a
second language. Education South
Africa (EduSA edusouthafrica.
com) ensures standards of quality
and professionalism, afliation to
international organisations, exciting
social programmes and the opportunity
to learn more than just a language.
Choices include preparation for tertiary
institutions, volunteer work placement,
learning English on safari and more.
PRACTICAL SAFETY TIPS
+ Avoid carrying large sums of cash,
dont carry cameras in plain sight and
do not leave belongings unattended.
+ Heed the advice of your hosts,
Cape Town Tourism Visitor Centre
staff or locals on where to go (and
which places to avoid) after dark.
+ Try not to walk alone, and take
special precautions at lonely
lookout points, especially at dusk
or at night.
+ Never allow strangers to assist you
in any way at ATMs.
+ Street children and beggars may
approach you for a handout. Many
social workers counsel against
giving money to the children as it
is usually handed over to an older
person or is used to purchase
drugs. If you wish to do good, rather
give food, donate your change to a
registered charity, or contact Cape
Town Tourism for advice.
+ At night, park in a secure, well-lit
area with ofcial street guards.
+ Keep photocopies of all valuable
documents in a safe place.
SAFETY IN
TABLE MOUNTAIN
NATIONAL PARK
Cape Town Tourism recommends the
use of a qualied mountain guide
should you wish to explore Table
Mountain National Park on foot.
Alternatively, make sure you take a
Table Mountain map, comfortable
walking shoes, a few friends and a
charged mobile phone. Make sure you
are also prepared for weather that can
change rapidly, even in summer. Bring
along enough water and sunblock
as well as something warm to wear.
Start heading back well before dark
and keep to the demarcated paths.

UPFRONT/ GETTING AROUND
GET YOUR
MYCONNECT CARD
MyCiTi does not accept cash on
the buses. Every passenger aged
four and over needs their own
myconnect card to travel. Get yours
for only R25 from MyCiTi stations,
including the Airport station, or
Cape Town Tourisms Visitor Centres
(Airport, Burg Street, Blaauwberg;
see page 7), and load your card with
money for travel. There are also
select retailers that sell the cards
and offer facilities to load money
on your card.
FARES
Fares are based on the distance in
kilometres travelled. You can also get
discounted prepaid travel packages:
Mover fare (from R80 for frequent
travellers) or the off-peak Saver fare.
USING MYCITI
Tap your myconnect card against the
special validators when you start your
journey and end your journey. This
ensures you pay the correct fare and
avoid penalties. If you enter or exit at
a station, tap your myconnect card
against the validator to the right of
the access gates and they will swing
open to let you through. If you enter
at a roadside bus stop, tap your card
against the validator marked IN.
When you exit a bus at a roadside
stop, tap your card against the
validator marked OUT as you get out.

guesthouse to recommend reliable
taxi companies in the area.
Councillor Brett Herron, Cape Town Mayoral Committee Member for Transport, Roads and Stormwater

02 TOP SIGHTS/ ICONIC CAPE TOWN
THE WORLD-FAMOUS TABLE
Mountain National Park (tmnp.co.za)
creates a striking backdrop to the city,
rising up from the sea and stretching
all the way down to Cape Point.
It is Cape Towns most precious asset
and the only New7Wonder of Nature
found in a city. Home to over 1 460
species of fynbos (and dassies also
known as rock rabbits or hyraxes the
only mountain inhabitant famously
related to elephants). Its been a
protected area for over 100 years.
The quickest way to explore this natural
wonder is to head up via the TABLE
MOUNTAIN AERIAL CABLEWAY
(tablemountain.net), which has been
running for over 80 years.
Each cable car whisks 65 people
along the 1 200 metre cable with
each ride thats more than 800
passengers an hour! Its design is
genius: the oor of the cable car
rotates, giving everyone a 360
view, and it can be stabilised when
windy by way of a 4 000 litre water
tank that is lled at the Lower
Station. When there is no wind,
the water is emptied for use at
the Upper Station. (The Cableway is,
however, closed due to strong winds
for anything from 60 to 90 days a year.)
There are three easy walks to do
on top, and free, guided walks
depart daily at 10am and 12 noon.
Afterwards, relax at Table Mountain
Caf (meals served on biodegradable
plates) or browse the Shop At The
Top. Energetic visitors should not miss
the Platteklip Gorge trail up the face
of the mountain, or book to walk the
Hoerikwaggo Trails that wind all the
way along the peninsula to Cape Point
(www.hoerikwaggotrail.org see
THE GREAT OUTDOORS, page 103).
Sabine Lehmann, Chairman Cape Town Tourism and MD Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Co.
WHAT GOES UP MUST ALSO COME
DOWN IN THE CABLE CAR.
All supplies, all fresh water and all
materials go up. And all rubbish,
sewage and recyclables come down.
This is usually done after hours to
ensure that everything is ready for
the next day.

pumped by the night-shift team into a
separate tank that is then attached to

WORTH A ROAD TRIP.
TAKE THE N1 FROM
CAPE TOWN, THE R60

Many Capetonians head regularly

ranges, is temperate MONTAGU.

wine cellars and the Ring of Stones
at BOPLAAS, which honours ancient
farmers and the solstices. Tour

ostrich farm in the area, or soak in
the Roman baths at the hot mineral
spring spa. Visit SAFARI OSTRICH

viewing from horseback, camel riding
and hot-air ballooning, its all here
in year-round warm weather. But
should you choose just one thing, visit
the breathtaking CANGO CAVES
(cangocaves.co.za) with the biggest

Cape Town not only plays host to the
annual Mercedes Benz Fashion Week
(see EVENTS CALENDAR on page
122), showcasing our unique take on
African fashion, but its also a location
hot spot, and models, photographers and
their crews descend on the city every
summer. So its no surprise that theres
an interesting fusion of boutiques, street
shopping, markets, pop-ups and world-
class malls for everything from designer
clothing to African artefacts. The trick is
to know where to go
CITY CENTRE:
LONG & BREE
STREETS
Long Street has been the pulsating vein
of the City Centre for years, where locals
and tourists mingle among the quaint
cafs, quirky shops, antique markets and
pan-African craft emporiums. Whats
great about shopping here is that when
the hunger pangs hit, and they will, there
are plenty of gourmet eateries. Today,
this vibe has expanded into Bree
Street, and both give an instant taste
of Cape Towns city life.
LONG STREET HEROES
+ African luxury: behind the historic
facade of MERCHANTS ON LONG
(merchantsonlong.com) youll nd
quality African exotica: artisanal
labels from all over Africa. Dont miss
the luxury Okapi handbags.
+ Antiques galore: LONG STREET
ANTIQUE ARCADE (021 423 3585) to
unearth vintage and antique nds.
+ African design: walk through
the turquoise-tiled entrance of
the PAN AFRICAN MARKET
(thepanafricanmarket.com) into a
labyrinth of traders stalls. If you cant
decide on which mask or statue youre
going to try to y home with, head for
the terrace for a view over Long Street.
+ Home decor: IMAGENIUS
(imagenius.co.za) is Alices African
rabbit hole! Beautifully styled local
jewellery, art, ceramics, accessories
and homeware are found here.
+ Designer fashion: MUNGO &
JEMIMA (mungoandjemima.com),
a womens boutique stocking bespoke
ranges from local designers.
BREE STREET HEROES
Bree Street has recently become a
design- and fashion-fabulous hot spot:
a more sophisticated neighbour where
youll nd architect studios, fabric
showrooms, a designer pop-up or two,
not to mention some of the citys best
daytime eateries.

KLOOF STREET
As an extension of Long Street, Kloof
Street is a treasure trove of shopping
nds leading to the suburbs of
Tamboerskloof, Oranjezicht, Higgovale
and Vredehoek. Best described as one
of the citys oldest high streets, expect
beautiful heritage buildings, bustling
eateries, boutiques, galleries and, of

chain outlet, WOOLWORTHS FOOD.
Nearby is THE GARDENS SHOPPING
CENTRE (gardensshoppingcentre.

and with more than 60 stores.
SOUTHERN
SUBURBS
Expect characterful hubs and streets
packed with quaint shops in these
otherwise leafy suburbs. Three stand-
out nodes are VINEYARD ROAD

Any discussion of Cape Towns ora
must start with KIRSTENBOSCH
NATIONAL BOTANICAL GARDEN
(sanbi.org.za). Situated in the heart
of the unique Cape Floral Kingdom
and established in 1913, it has just
celebrated its centenary. Kirstenbosch
is family friendly, with lawns for picnics
and gentle streams and walking trails
to enjoy, including the Braille Trail (see
page 32). Summers bring the ever-
popular Sunday afternoon Old Mutual
open-air concerts (see EVENTS MAP
on page 122).
In the Southern Suburbs,
RONDEBOSCH COMMON,
NEWLANDS FOREST and RHODES
MEMORIAL (rhodesmemorial.
co.za) are popular among walkers
and joggers. On the South Peninsula,
DIE OOG BIRD SANCTUARY &
NATURE RESERVE (dieoog.org.za)
in Bergvliet is a sanctuary not just
for birds, but also for the endangered
western leopard toad. If your idea of
a good weekend includes walking,

BEACHES & MARINE LIFE
Many of the Capes beaches enjoy Blue Flag status. Considered one of the
worlds top 10 beaches, CLIFTON is sheltered from wind and ideal for sunsets
and people-watching. CAMPS BAY has a palm-lined beach and tidal pool, with
a row of restaurants and shops on the Riviera-like strip. BAKOVEN is for those
who rate privacy over popularity. Heading south past OUDEKRAAL Nature
Reserves private coves youll reach LLANDUDNO with its beautiful sunsets,
SANDY BAY with its nudists, and HOUT BAY with its dog walkers. Over
Chapmans Peak youll nd NOORDHOEKs long beach (all 8km of it), which
has an old shipwreck near the Kommetjie end, along with the wilder option
of SCARBOROUGH. Around Cape Point and into False Bay the water gets
warmer which is great for bathers, but also, sadly, for sharks. Remember to
check the shark spotter ags (see page 108) before you take a dip. At Simons
Town youll get to swim with the African penguins at BOULDERS PENGUIN
COLONY (tmnp.co.za), or take photos from the wheelchair-friendly boardwalk.
Next are GLENCAIRN and the family friendly FISH HOEK. With its colourful

forest walks. Swim in the dam
or walk up to ELEPHANTS EYE

escape to wild spaces, slip below the ocean surface and play
