Cultural Tourism as Salvation for Petty Capitalists: the Pedicab Drivers of the Las Vegas of the
East
BY: Cora Un In Wong/2013 PG. 16 AND 17

Worldmaking always involves the one who has power to make and the one who is powerless
to being made. In the context of this paper, the pedicab drivers are the powerless whose
survival is completely, dependent on the effect of external power exercised by others, that is,
tourists patronage and the local authorities with regulatory power. These two are the powerful
actors who can generate positive or adverse influence on the prospect of pedicabs.

Are Tour Guides in China Ready for the Booming Tourism Industry?
By: Haiyan Kong, Catherine Cheung,Tom Baum/2009

The underpinning level of educational attainment and limited working experiences have
been contributing factors to low quality service. To meet the demands and challenges of
the job, a requirement to have further training, especially in the field of foreign
language, communication and leadership skills is highly recommended.

Synthesis:

The study conducted by Wong corresponds to this paper because this study also deals
on the relationship between drivers and tourist. Though we do not view our drivers as
powerless.Pedicabs and Trycicles just need to be subsidized by the government and be
guided with properly implemented policies, for the tourist to be fully engaged in riding
them.
The study by Kong, Cheung, Baum correspond with our study because due to those
lacking qualities our drivers serving as tour guides are not fully successful in satisfying
tourist with their service.
