A. Six Reasons which led the rise of Filipino Nationalism

When the Philippine is open to the world market The world trades open to the
Philippines has caused for the spaniards to sell more products to other
countries. Since the materials came from the Philippines they use our resources
and do not repay us as they sell more things we grow to have less resources but
the positive is that our economy increases.

When the Ilustrados came out as a second class society The Ilustrados
constituted the Filipino educated class during the Spanish colonial period in the
late 19
th
century. They were the middle class who were educated in Spanish and
exposed to Spanish liberal and European nationalist ideals. The Ilustrado class
was composed of native-born intellectuals and cut across ethnolinguistic and
raciel lines(Indios, Insulares, and mestizos, among others) and sought reform
through a more equitable arrangement of both political and economic power
under Spanish tutelage

The spread of liberalism - Liberal ideas from Europe filtered in when Spain
gradually exposed Philippine to international commerce. The sons and
daughters of the Principalia were able to attain education, thereupon giving then
exposure to libertarian ideas.

The secularization of the church - Two kinds of priests served the Catholic
Church in the Philippines. These were the regulars and the seculars. Regular
priests belonged to religious orders. Their main task was to spread Christianity.
Examples were the Franciscans, Recollects, Spanish church in Cavite circa 1899
Dominicans, and Augustinians. Secular priests did not belong to any religious
order. They were trained specifically to run the parishes and were under the
supervision of the bishops.

The execution of GomBurZa It marked the beginning of a new era as the
Propaganda Period. Propaganda Movement is a peaceful campaign organization
using literary endeavour as mouthpiece to publicize the political, economic, and
religious problems in the colony.

The liberal government of Governor General Maria Carlos de la Torre - In June of
1869 a new Governor-General arrived in Manila. Carlos Maria de la Torre y Nava
Cerrada. He was a soldier who could prove his valor by wounds gained in many
successful battles which had brought him to the rank of Lieutenant General.
The nobility of his family, almost as distinguished as royalty, gave him
precedence among aristocrats. Wealth, too, he had. Yet he was Manila's first
democratic governor.

B. English Version: The life that is not spent in the service of a great and noble cause is
like a tree without a shade, or like a poisonous weed.
Tagalog Version: Ang kabuhayan na hindi ginugugol sa isang malaki at banal na
kadahilanan ay kahoy na walang lilim kundi man damong makamandag.

I chose this statement of Emilio Jacinto from his kartilla because I think we can
really relate it to our present government now. Philippines have a lot of government
issues that came out lately. There was this corruption issues like pork barrel scam,
PDAP, & more. There were also multiple politicians that are now imprisoned. As what is
indicated in his statement, a life that is not spent in the service of a great and noble
cause is like a tree without a shade or like a poisonous weed. I can relate this statement
to our present government because our present government is most likely like a
poisonous weed. They arent doing their work well and theyre taking the money of the
countrymen in their pockets, theyre not taking it for the wellness and betterness of our
country. Instead of doing their work properly, theyre keeping the money of our
countrymen in their own wallets as if they are their own. They have personal agendas
why theyre in the position. They are not in there to work for the country and the
people, they are there because they want themselves to be richer and richer. They want
to claim the richness of the country thats why it is only them who have benefits of it,
and here we are, suffering though were doing our part as a tax payer. I can say that
these politicians are one of the so called poisonous weed because they are just
poisonous as they are. They bring no good in this country and for politicians like them,
they must die and must be prevented because they are harmful for the country and the
countrymen.
