Energy from waste

Step Grate

A WELL SUITED SOLUTION FOR SMALL AND
MEDIUM FACILITIES

From 15,000 to 60,000 tons per annum and
per energy recovery stream
Energy recovery from waste of calorific value
up to 12,500 kJ/kg
Municipal solid waste treatment (raw or residual
solid waste from separate collection)
Treatment of Infectious Clinical Waste (ICW)
Co-incineration of sludge from wastewater
treatment plant

FLEXIBLE AND
OPTIMISED WASTE
COMBUSTION

The Technology
This furnace is consisting of a succession of set and mobile steps, which
ensure a regular combustion of waste. A variable speed feeder pushes the
waste into the kiln. Subject to the intensive radiation of the vault, the
waste undergo the first stage of drying and start burning. Then they are
processed through the combustion chamber till the end, where the
remaining parts are completely burnt so that only the bottom ashes are
removed. In order to smooth the combustion process, the kiln is divided
into 4 independent combustion zones associated with specific air supply.
This grate was recently optimised in its mechanical design, to enable a
suited combustion throughout the processing of waste.

Main advantages

The step grate has a simple and robust design, and allows the 3 requirements for a quality combustion to be met: high
temperature above 850C; significant gas turbulence; gas lifetime longer than 2s at 850C and waste combustion
duration longer than 45 minutes.

Competitive in terms of investment and operation costs (local solution to waste treatment).

Technical Specifications

Grate slope at 24.

Consisting of a maximum of 12
hydraulic mechanism steps
distributed in 2 or 3 zones, with
working frequencies and stroke
automatically adjustable according to
the nature of waste.

Each step consists of refractory steel
bars composed of 28% chromium
content

A hydraulic mechanism feeder
ensures a continuous supply to the
grate

The combustion is consisting in three
successive stages: drying,
combustion, extinction and bottom
ashes removal

Fully automated combustion control:

waste and air flows, air-fuel pressure,
temperature, O, CO and CO content,
thermal load.
