IBGE Estimates Brazil 2014 Paddy Rice Production
to Increase to 12.2 Million Tons; Up 4% from Last
Year
Sep 10, 2014

The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) has estimated Brazil's 2014 paddy rice production to
increase to around 12.2 million tons, up about 4% from around 11.76 million tons produced in 2013, according
to a press release on its website. In its August estimates, the IBGE expects the average yield in 2014 to reach
around 5.172 tons per hectare, up about 3.4% from around 5 tons per hectares achieved in 2013. The Institute
expects the area harvested under rice to reach around 2.36 million hectares in 2014.
The Rio Grande do Sul is the largest paddy producing region in Brazil and accounts for about 67.8% of Brazil's
total paddy rice production. The IBGE expects the region to achieve a yield of about 7.4 tons per hectare on an
area of around 1.11 million hectares. In August 2014, Brazils National Grains Supply Company (Conab) has
lowered its paddy rice production forecast for 2013-14 to around 12.2 million tons, up about 3% from about
11.82 million tons produced in 2012-13 and almost unchanged from its July forecast.USDA estimates Brazil's
milled rice production at around 8.35 million tons in MY 2014-15 (April 2014 - March 2015), slightly up from
around 8.3 million tons produced in MY 2013-14. Brazil's 2014-15 rice exports are estimated at around 900,000
tons, down about 5% from around 950,000 tons exported in 2013-14. Brazil's 2014-15 rice imports are
estimated at last year's level of around 700,000 tons.

Cold Weather Delays Italian Rice Crop
Sep 10, 2014

An old saying goes, When in August you can sleep, it is not a good rice year. Following the cold weather of
this crop year, Coldiretti Pavia, the most important farmers union of Pavia province, forecasts a decrease of
10% in paddy production for this area, noting that in some cases, the percentage could reach as much as 15-
20%.In July and August, there were 20 days in which the minimum temperature dropped below the seasonal
average of 19 degrees Celsius. This change in temperature has caused plant ripeness to slow down with many
panicles not yet growing their grains. All of this will bring a delay in harvesting, which will likely be postponed
until the end of September or the beginning of October.

In the Lombardy area, Coldiretti says there has been a significant reduction in production with a loss of 200,000
tons from 2012. There are about 1,800 total farmers with 73,000 hectares in Pavia province, 11,500 hectares in
Milan province, 1,000 hectares in Lodi province, and 900 hectares in Mantova province. The decrease is due to
climate change and the substitution of rice with other commodities due to price trends.

India Develops New Pest-Resistant and High-
Yielding Basmati Rice Variety
Sep 10, 2014

Scientists at the Indian Agriculture Research Institute (IARI), part of the Indian Council of Agriculture
Research (ICAR) under the Agriculture Ministry have developed a new pest-resistant and high-yielding basmati
rice variety, called 'Pusa 1609', according to local sources.Pusa 1609 is resistant to plant diseases like 'neck
blast' and 'leaf blast', which usually impact the yield of basmati rice.

"The new variety is developed with special resistance genes Piz5 and
Pi54 to protect the plants from neck blast and leaf blast disease", the
ICAR scientists were quoted as saying. The scientists also told local
sources that the new variety is early maturing compared to older basmati
rice varieties. Pusa 1609 has a maturity period of 120 days while older
varieties need maturity period of about 130-140 days. The new variety is
understood to yield around 6 tons per hectare compares to 4.5 tons per
hectare yielded by the earlier basmati rice varieties.
The Agriculture Ministry will reportedly release the new variety on a trial basis in western Uttar Pradesh,
Uttarakhand, Punjab and some parts of Delhi region soon after reviewing reports from the ICAR. Scientists say
Pusa 1609 would revolutionize basmati rice production in India.Officials at the Indian Agriculture Ministry
have estimated basmati rice acreage in the 2014 kharif rice season (June - December) at around 3.5 million
hectares, up about 40% from around 2.5 million hectares planted last year, according to local sources.India
exported around 3.76 million tons of basmati rice in FY 2013-14 (April - March), up about 9% from around
3.46 million tons exported in FY 2012-13, according to data from the Agricultural and Processed Food Products
Export Development Authority (APEDA). India exported a total of 10.78 million tons of rice (including basmati
and non-basmati) in FY 2013-14, up about 6% from about 10.15 million tons exported last year.

Malaysia Buys 200,000 Tons of Rice from Thailand
Sep 10, 2014
Malaysia's state grains buying agency Bernas has bought 200,000
tons of rice from Thai exporters via private deals for immediate
delivery, according to Reuters.Thai exporters told local sources
that Bernas has purchased rice from the latest 2014 off-season crop
(January - July), harvested in July-August and maintained by
private exporters. They also told that Bernas is planning to strike a
government-to-government (G2G) deal with the Thai government
to purchase another 200,000 tons, adding that Bernas
representatives are likely to visit Bangkok over the next few weeks
to discuss over the G2G deal.
Malaysia is a traditional buyer of Thai rice but shifted to Vietnam over the past few years after the rice pledging scheme
led to an illogical increase in Thai rice prices.Malaysia imports around one million tons of rice yearly. USDA estimates
Malaysia to produce around 1.755 million tons and import around 1.1 million tons of rice in 2014 to meet a consumption
demand of around 2.775 million tons.Thailand is keen on reclaiming its worlds top exporter status this year after two
years of suppression due to the controversial rice pledging scheme. According to data from the Thai Rice Exporters

from around 3.61 million tons exported during the same period in 2013. TREA estimates Thailand to export over 10
million tons of rice in 2014.

Thai New Commerce Minister Prioritizes Rice
Sector Reforms
Sep 10, 2014
Thailand's newly appointed Commerce Minister is keen on prioritizing rice sector reforms, including sale of 18
million rice stocks in government warehouses, driving up rice prices, reducing production costs and driving
exports, according to local sources. The Minister told local sources decisions regarding rice sales should be
taken carefully to avoid excessive fall in prices. He also noted that too much delay in rice sales would on the
other hand lead to deterioration of quality and higher stock holding costs.
The newly appointed Deputy Commerce Minister told local sources that the government would need the Thai
Rice Exporters Association (TREA) support to frame strategies to promote Thai rice exports. The Commerce
Minister and his Deputy are keen on expanding overall exports of the country, which shrank by about 0.42% in
the first seven months of 2014, by at least 1.9% y/y.

Researchers Find New Approach to Increase Rice
Yields and Reduce Greenhouse Gases in China
Sep 10, 2014

A new study by Stanford Woods Institute Senior Fellow Peter
Vitousek and his team at the China Agricultural University has
found that rice cultivation methods in China could be designed
in such a manner so as to improve yields while reducing
environmental damages.The Integrated Soil-Crop System
Management (ISSM) approach is aimed at increasing rice yields
in tune with the growing population as well as reducing
greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from rice fields.

Daily Rice E-Newsletter by Rice Plus Magazine www.ricepluss.com
News and R&D Section mujajhid.riceplus@gmail.com Cell # 92 321 369 2874

The ISSM approach allows farmers to alter their decisions like crop selection, planting, sowing and nutrient
management depending on the field's conditions. On field experiments using the ISSM approach between 2009
and 2012 showed that the approach required much less fertilizer and also used the fertilizer more efficiently by
not wasting much of nitrogen and emitting significantly lower greenhouse gases. The researchers say Chinese
rice farmers use maximum amount of fertilizer to increase rice yields, which has been leading to environmental
damage by way of increasing GHG emissions.
They say a prolonged overuse of fertilizers would ultimately lead to climate changes. They also noted that such
an approach, which increases yield while contributing to lesser environmental damage is important for China,
which is the world's largest populated country but has significantly higher levels of air and water pollution. This
would help ensure food security in China and help it play a vital role in influencing global food markets, they
added.China already spends billions of dollars annually to help financially under-developed countries, mostly in
Africa, increase rice production as well as guide them with poverty alleviation programs. In this sense, adoption
of ISSM may certainly go a long way in benefitting China.

growing region of Punjab, according to local sources.Floods have devastated several hectares of paddy rice
fields, according to officials in the agriculture department. They told local sources that some millions of rupees
worth paddy is likely to be destroyed. Rice farmers have expressed severe disappointment over the
government's lacklustre attitude.
They blamed the government for not attempting to build sufficient reservoirs and dams to store flood
water.Experts are expecting the local rice prices to increase significantly following this devastation. Currently,
average retail prices of basmati rice stand at around Rs.76,540 (around $770) per ton and those of non-basmati
rice prices stand at around Rs.61,540 (around $620) per ton. Average retail prices of basmati rice have been
stable since June 2013, and average retail prices of non-basmati rice are stable since May 2014.The National
Space Agency of Pakistan (SUPARCO) estimates Pakistan FY 2013-14 (July - June) milled rice production to
cross 7 million tons. USDA estimates Pakistan to produce about 6.6 million tons of rice, basis milled, in MY
2013-14 (November 2013 - October 2014). It estimates Pakistan rice production to increase to about 6.7 million
tons in MY 2014-15.
