As I am a person who is in charge of writing and reporting news, during the first three days, I have performed a

lot of duties. On the fourth day, they gave me a chance to write press release by interviewed some cases alone. Therefore,
during the first week, I have started to work independently.
As I first expose to Journalism, I had facing a lot of uncertainties; especially on what important information
should I ask. However, after having work for long and been to many events, I could understand my responsibilities and
work efficiently. I will ask my senior colleagues and supervisor when I am facing difficulties in interviewing subjects.
They are nice and willing to teach me. Therefore, I learnt a lot from them.
During my internship at the China Press, I had to cover a diverse range of local and special interest stories, which
was a great way for me to see and experience many different aspects of my hometown, Kuantan. In an average day, I went
to several sites alone, where I would take pictures, interview participants or spectators, and make notes or look for
additional information. When I returned to the office, usually in the early afternoon, I would write a news release about
the information I had just collected. Then I would sit down with my supervisor, who would edit both my grammar and my
style.
On several occasions, I also wrote articles on my own to actually be published. I was again encouraged to pick my
own topics, which allowed me to seek extra exposure to journalism that I was particularly unfamiliar with.
During this 14-week, I have accomplished a lot of assignments, such as:
1. Iron slag greatly affected the health of the Kampung Selamat villagers.
2. Form 3 student drowns during camp outing in Sungai Lembing.
3. Fire incident in Kuantan.
4. Visited the farmers' market with my supervisor and covered a feature articles on ulam- different kinds of wild
vegetables.
5. Covered the story of Minions Fever in Kuantan.
6. Lastly, a Sungai Galing Kuantan patrol by boat with state councilor, is just an example of the places and events I
got to witness.
As a reporter, I got to see a lot of places and meet plenty of prominent figures, and I was privileged to deepen my
understanding of what life of a reporter is like, both in and outside the office. It was totally different from what I have
seen from television. Furthermore, this experience was an opportunity for more than just study from university. I got to
discover parts of society that I seldom get to see; and in many cases, that side was the everyday, working side of society.
Ive learnt how to adapt to new environment.
On the other hand, I have learnt the translation skill which needs us to reconstruct the phases so the article will
looks more fluent and proper. Whats more, I learnt the skill to determine the main points and values of the news.
On the whole, this internship was a useful experience. I have gained new knowledge, skills and met plenty of new
people which teach me how to work independently.
Recommendations
Team Building Exercises
I recommend that The China Press Bhd should organize a team building exercises regularly to its employees in
favor of building close relationship among them. This would give employees time to re-examine what they have achieved
so far, share personal experiences and ideas, learn to be together and appreciate the meaning of team work.
Financial Supports
I recommend that The China Press Bhd should increase the allowance for the interns. It is because the allowance
given by The China Press Bhd is too low that it couldnt afford our daily meals and transport expenses to and from work.
It would be generous if The China Press can review its financial support to interns to reflect the ever changing economic
situation in Malaysia.
Increase Manpower
It is because there are only 4 reporters in The China Press Bhd. Therefore, there are too much of work for a
reporter to handle each day.
Improvement in Computer System
The China Press Bhd is currently still using outdated computer software and hardware. Therefore, it takes time to
start and shut down the computer. In this situation, it is a disadvantage for the reporter as we need to work fast in orders to
submit the article in time. In addition, the internet speed of the company also needs to be enhanced as the companys
networks are slow, and frequently down. During my internship, we experienced internet down for few times when the
deadline is approaching. Internet connectivity for a newspaper company is vital as we use internet to transfer news articles
and photos.
Conclusion
As a conclusion, I strongly believe that we would gain more experiences and knowledge related to media and
journalism through industrial training. This is the valuable opportunity for me to sharpen, widen and strengthen my
knowledge regarding media management. On the other hand, Industrial Training has provided me a good exposure and
knowledge and also helped me to enhance my communication and problem solving skills. Furthermore, I learned to be
adapted to the working environment. From the experiences in The China Press Bhd, I found that the real working
environment is much more different than the study environment. The Industrial Training has made me a more responsible
person which is useful for me in the future.
Lastly, after 14 weeks, it can be said that, the Industrial Training was successful and achieved its objectives. Here,
the knowledge that I get did not comes only from books, but skills and experience from the people around. For the whole
training period, it is a useful experience for me to be adapted now and in near future.
