TRENCHER MAINTENANCE AS REQUIRED
Digger Drive Sprocket - Reverse/Replace
The digger chain drive sprocket is a two-piece, bolt-on type for easy replacement. It can
be reversed once to extend its useful life.
When installing a new digger chain always reverse or replace the sprocket. A new chain
will not fit a worn sprocket correctly and will wear prematurely.
The two sprocket halves bolt to the sprocket hub with six 5/8 NF x 2-1/2 grade 8 bolts.
Torque bolts to 195240 ft-lb (264325 Nm).
1
V5750 Tractor Maintenance Trencher Periodic Maintenance 50-9
Digger Shaft Bearings - Replace
The digger shaft assembly must be removed to replace digger shaft bearings. Instructions for removing the
shaft are provided in the Service Manual.
Trencher Rock and Frost Slide - Maintain
The trencher boom can be equipped with a rock and frost slide (1). The slide has
proven to be very effective in tough digging conditions.
The slide supports the chain where it is cutting in the trench, reducing wear on rollers
and sidebars caused by backbending the chain. Also, cutters are more efficient as they
are kept at a constant cutting angle all along the trench.
The slide wear plate may be either bolted on or welded on to trencher boom. Both
styles are replaceable and should be changed when the slide has excessive wear.
Adjustable wear tab (1) at the end of the slide must be kept within 1/4 (6 mm) of the
end idler.
Digging Chain - Maintain
The trencher can be equipped with one of two chain options.
The 2960 chain with 2 (5.1 cm) pitch is rated at 60,000 lb (27,215 kg) tensile strength.
The 3990 chain with 3 (7.5 cm) pitch is rated at 90,000 lb (40,825 kg) tensile strength.
Both are available with M style attachment links. The 3990 chain is also available with
K style attachment links.
With K attachment links, cutters are bolted to a plate which is attached to the chain.
With M attachment links, cutters are bolted to the vertical link itself with spacers used between the
attachment links for chain rigidity. The proper length spacers are very important to prevent distortion of the
link when bolting cutters to the chain. Contact your Vermeer dealer for proper chain setup.
1
M K
50-10 Trencher Periodic Maintenance V5750 Tractor Maintenance
Maintenance of the digging chain should include the following:
Maintain digging chain tension - overtightening the digging chain will cause unnecessary wear. Excessive
slack will cause poor cutter efficiency.
Keep digging drive sprocket, auger drive sprocket, and end idler in-line.
Keep cutters in good condition. Broken or badly worn cutters can shorten chain life.
WARNING: Never oil the digging chain with the machine running. Contact with the moving
digging chain will result in serious injury or death.
Clean and oil digging chain when not in use for an extended period of time. This will prevent the rollers
from rusting tight.
Digging Chain - Adjust
Step 1: Follow Shutdown Procedure, page 11-1, except leave the boom horizontal to
the ground.
Step 2: Loosen bolts (1).
Step 3: Loosen lock nut (2) on the adjustment bolt.
Step 4: Turn adjustment nut (3) until there is a 12 (2.55 cm) gap between the
bottom of the boom and the digging chain.
Step 5: Tighten lock nut (2).
Step 6: Tighten bolts (1).
Step 7: Trench Cleaner Shoe: Adjust clearance between the cutter tips and
trench cleaner shoe (refer to Trench Cleaner Bridge - Adjust, page 50-17

Digging Chain - Remove
WARNING: Ensure all spectators and other workers are clear of the machine and
surrounding area before pulling on digging chain or log chain with a power source. The
use of an adequate hoist is preferred when removing or installing a digging chain.
Step 1: Locate master pin (1). The master pin is identified by a stud driven
through a hole in the roller pin.
Step 2: Position master pin so it is on top of the boom and in the desired location.
If chain is being split to provide access to the end idler, master pin should
be near the end idler. In other situations, master pin should be near
digging drive sprocket.
Step 3: Follow Shutdown Procedure, page 11-1, except leave boom 6 (15 cm) above
the ground.
WARNING: The disconnected digger chain could unwind rapidly from the end idler and
drive sprocket when the chain is unpinned. Injury can result if you are struck by the chain.
Do not allow anyone to stand behind the end idler when the chain is unpinned.
Step 4: Drive stud out of master pin. Drive master pin out of chain.

Digging Chain - Install
Step 1: Spread chain out on the ground.
Step 2: Drive trencher over the chain so that approximately 2 ft (60 cm) of chain
extends past the digging drive sprocket.
Step 3: Lower boom so it is just above the digging chain.
Step 4: Loosen bolts (1). Loosen lock nut (2) on the adjustment bolt. Loosen
adjustment nut (3) so boom can retract, if necessary, as the digging chain is
pulled together.
Step 5: Pull digging chain onto the drive sprocket. The use of a hoist, if available,
is preferred.
Step 6: Slowly run the digging drive sprocket forward until the end of digging
chain is on the top of the boom near center of wear strip.
Step 7: Pull other end of digging chain up over the end idler and onto boom. The
use of a hoist, if available, is preferred.
Step 8: Pull the two ends of the digging chain together with a winch. If a winch is
not available, follow Steps 9 and 10.

2
V5750 Tractor Maintenance Trencher Periodic Maintenance 50-13
WARNING: Use a chain with a 6000-lb (2722 kg) working load limit to
chain the digging chain to the boom.
Step 9: Securely tie the end of the digging chain referred to in Step 6 to the
boom with a heavy chain.
WARNING: Keep everyone clear of the boom area. Serious injury
could result if the chain comes loose and strikes a bystander.
Step 10: Run digging drive sprocket forward with the engine at idle until the chain stops moving. The log chain
will be excessively strained if engine speed is above idle.
Step 11: Shut off engine.
Step 12: While standing at a safe distance, visually check that log chain is securely attached and will not come
loose.
Step 13: Align holes in the chain and install master pin. Drive stud through master pin.
Digging Chain Wear - Check
As the digging chain is used it will stretch. This is caused by wear at all of
the chain pivot points. The digging chain is worn out when it has
stretched 6%. Check measurement (1) from the center of first pin to the
center of seventh pin.
ROTATION
50-14 Trencher Periodic Maintenance V5750 Tractor Maintenance
On a new 3990 digging chain, the measurement is 18 (45.7 cm). If measurement exceeds 19-1/16 (48.4 cm),
the chain is worn out.
On a new 2960 digging chain, the measurement is 12 (30.5 cm). If measurement exceeds 12 3/4 (32.4 cm), the
chain is worn out.
As the digging chain wears, adjust boom length to maintain proper chain tension as explained in Digging Chain
- Adjust, page 50-10 in this section. If boom cannot be extended farther to compensate for chain wear, remove
two chain links. The digging chain can then be installed with the boom retracted.
Digging Chain - Remove Portion
WARNING: The disconnected digger chain could unwind rapidly from the end idler and
drive sprocket when the chain is unpinned. Injury can result if you are struck by the chain.
Do not allow anyone to stand behind the end idler when the chain is unpinned.
Step 1: If the digging chain is on the trencher, position master pin (1) on end idler.
The end idler will give the chain support as pin is driven out.
Step 2: Drive stud out of master pin. Drive master pin out of the chain and lay the
end of the chain on the ground.
1
V5750 Tractor Maintenance Trencher Periodic Maintenance 50-15
NOTE: The foot of each pin is D-shaped. Determine which end is the foot end by
checking the holes for the master pin. The foot of each pin is on the same
side of the chain as the D-shaped hole.
On the 3990 chain, the foot end of the pin has a smaller internal diameter.
The foot end is rounded while the pin head is flat.
Step 3: If digging chain is on the trencher, secure digging chain with a rope or
chain to prevent end of digging chain from sliding off the end idler when
pin is driven out.
Step 4: Locate the pin you want to remove and grind off the foot. Do not use a
cutting torch. A cutting torch may fuse the pin to the chain's sidebar or
alter the strength of the sidebar's steel.
Step 5: Drive pin out of digging chain.
NOTE: The foot of the pin is D-shaped or has a smaller diameter. The pin can only
be driven out of the digging chain from the foot end of the pin.
Cutters - Replace
The cutting teeth are cup cutters or rotary bits.
Keep base plates or cup cutters tight.
Check teeth regularly for wear. Replace broken or missing teeth immediately. Broken, missing, or badly
worn teeth on one side will cause the machine to pull toward the side with worn teeth. Broken or badly
worn teeth rob engine power, slow down trenching speed, and may cause the heel of chain links to wear
excessively.
The cup cutters have hard surfacing applied to the main wearing surface. Cup cutters are recommended for
digging in sand, dirt, and clay.
Rotary bits are carbide-tipped for hard and dry or rocky conditions. Your productivity will be significantly
reduced if you use rotary bits in wet or sticky digging conditions.

base plates are removed.
Step 2: Place new base plate(s) in position. Install spacers and bolts. Install new
grade 8 lock nuts. Torque nuts to 240 ft-lb (325 Nm).
Trench Cleaner Bridge - Adjust
The trench cleaner is designed to clean loose soil from the bottom of the trench. The
trench cleaner extension plates are set 1 (2.5 cm) narrower than the cutter setup.
Whenever the digging chain is adjusted, the trench cleaner bridge must also be
adjusted to keep cutters from hitting the trench cleaner shoe. The proper clearance
is 1-1/22 (45 cm) between the trench cleaner shoe and cutter tips when the trench
cleaner shoe is rolled down on the arch.
50-18 Trencher Periodic Maintenance V5750 Tractor Maintenance
NOTE: Use the following procedure for adjusting either the trench cleaner bridge or
restraint bar.
Step 1: Determine how much adjustment is needed.
Step 2: Support end of trench cleaner bridge or restraint bar and remove bolt (1).
Step 3: Slide trench cleaner bridge or restraint bar to obtain proper adjustment.
Step 4: Align holes and install bolt (1).
Step 5: Tighten bolt.
Restraint Bar - Adjust
A restraint bar can be used instead of the trench cleaner. The proper position of the
restraint bar is 69 (1523 cm) from the rear-most point of cutters to the end of the
restraint bar. Adjustment of this position is required every time the digging chain is
adjusted or replaced.
Augers - Maintain
The augers are driven by the digger chain. Standard augers are not hard-surfaced.
Hard-surfaced augers are available from your dealer if needed to reduce wear. To
prevent early failure of auger shaft bearings, do not allow augers to run in solid
contact with any object such as rocks or the ground.
NOTE: The two augers are the converse of each other. If an auger returns spoil to
the trench, it is installed on the wrong side of the trencher.

Slide Wear Pads (SO5750) - Adjust
Keep bolts (1) properly adjusted. If bolts are too tight, the trencher will not shift.
To check and adjust wear pad play:
Step 1: Follow Shutdown Procedure, page 11-1,with trencher 12 (2.55 cm) off
the ground.
Step 2: Check gap between wear pad (2) and tubes. If gap is more than 1/8 (3
mm), tighten bolts (1) evenly until gap is less than 1/16 (1.6 mm).
Step 3: After tightening bolts, restart the machine and check for smooth
operation of the trencher shift.
Slide Wear Pads (SO5750) - Maintain
The slide wear pads are made from a self-lubricating material and require no
maintenance. They are intended to be run dry. Adding lubrication may lead to
attachment shifting problems and/or excessive wear of slide wear pads.
To prevent rust on the metal tubes and to improve shifting, apply an automotive
finish wax to metal tubes.
The wear pads (1) should be replaced when pad thickness is .3 (8 mm) or less.
Refer to Service Manual or contact your Vermeer dealer when pads need to be
replaced.
