Dear Friends,
As we enter 2013, it does appear that the global economic crisis is bottoming out
creating a sense of cautious optimism. Global IT-BPM spend is expected to grow by 6 per
cent in 2013 to touch USD 2 trillion. More importantly, the rate of introduction of disruptive
technologies will continue to be faster; SMAC (Social, Mobility, Analytics, Cloud)
technologies is expected to increase to over USD 1 trillion by 2020.

Technology is reshaping everything around us businesses, consumers, countries
creating opportunities that never existed before. IT is shifting from traditional process
automation to strategic BI, collaboration, customer facing technologies and future of
technology is beyond just services -- a complete blend of services, solutions, products
and platforms.

The industry in India is positioning itself to address current and emerging opportunities. IP
based platforms, reinvented business models, customer centric solutions and blended delivery is helping the industry
emerge as a strategic business partner to global customers. Reflecting this change, two forums at NASSCOM have
initiated an exercise to rebrand the industry sector. The Captive Forum representing about 750+ companies are now
positioned as Global In-house Centres (GICs) and the BPO industry is being repositioned as Business Process
Management.

The vibrant start-up ecosystem in the country is creating innovative products and solutions that are targeted at the
global and Indian market; enterprise and the SMB user. NASSCOM is creating a focused program to support these start-
ups and encourage greater entrepreneurship in the country.

It has been my pleasure to chair NASSCOM in the past year and work with the Executive Council and NASSCOM
Secretariat on various initiatives. Exploring new markets in Africa, Asia including China and Japan has been a strategic
thrust. At the same time, we are building thought leadership on how technology can be a key enabler for India
creating an additional 2 per cent GDP impact by 2020.

As we look ahead and work towards helping the industry to realise its 2020 vision, we have also created a high-powered
committee that is looking at NASSCOM in 2020 and how will it internally build capabilities and programs to align with the
needs of the industry.

NASSCOM is a unique association which has evolved with the growth of the industry. Its success has been enabled by the
leadership and support provided by the industry. On behalf of NASSCOM I would like to thank all the members for their
support to NASSCOM.

Message from the President
Dear Friends,
The year 2012 was a year of uncertainty with the global economic slowdown, lower GDP
growth in India, slower technology spending and a volatile currency. The industry in India
however maintained its growth momentum registering a double digit growth and
clocking revenues of USD 108 billion in the fiscal year.

NASSCOM focus and priorities in the year were focused towards a three pronged
approach create programs that meet the diverse membership that NASSCOM
represents; focus on addressing business and regulatory issues and continue to position as
a key destination for this industry.

NASSCOM maintained an action packed agenda, expanding its portfolio of events,
conferences, and workshops and rolling out specific initiatives for different industry
segments. The Emerge community remained a focal point for NASSCOM and witnessed
the scaling up of the employee health insurance plan, MOU with SIDBI for access to funding and regional programs. At
the same time, several mentoring sessions and focused initiatives were launched for product companies to help them
get on the growth path and increase visibility. IP4Biz and NASSCOM AWSME Survey were launched to help product
companies connect with enterprise users and SMBs in the country. Focused research reports were published in the year
to highlight growth opportunities and showcase the industrys transformation initiatives.

During the year, NASSCOM continued to actively engage with the Indian government, making recommendations to
remove some of the irritants in the area of policy that were impeding industry growth. Ease of doing business was the key
priority which includes an action plan of building an entrepreneurship mission in the country.

Strategic initiatives around cyber security were undertaken with the government announcing a public private
partnership on critical information infrastructure. NASSCOM Education initiative was formally launched as the IT-ITeS
Sector Skill Council under NSDC and is now working on building detailed occupational standards in the country.

NASSCOM played the role of an influencer in global markets where it took up matters related to legislation (including
visas, immigration and trade barriers) with policy makers in the US, Canada, Europe and Australia. NASSCOM continued
to invite overseas delegations and organise Indian delegations to other nations, with a view to creating awareness
about new markets and showcasing the business opportunities for foreign players in India. India was the featured
country at CeBIT Australia in 2012 and helped showcase the potential of Indian companies in this market.

Overall, NASSCOM continued to strengthen its connect with member companies reaching out to them through its
various Forums, including the Engineering Forum, BPM Forum, GIC Forum, Gaming Forum among others.

About NASSCOM
Vision
Mission
Members
National Association of Software and Service
Companies (NASSCOM) is the industry association for
the IT-BPM sector in India. A not-for-profit organisation
funded by the industry, its objective is to build a growth-
led, sustainable, technology and business services
segment in the country.
Established in 1988, NASSCOMs membership has grown
over the last 25 years and currently stands at over 1400.
The member organisations represent 95 per cent of
industry revenues and have enabled the association to
spearhead initiatives and programmes to strengthen
the sector in the country and globally.
NASSCOM members are active participants in the new
global economy and are admired for their innovative
business practices, social initiatives and thrust on
emerging opportunities.
NASSCOM is headquartered in New Delhi, India, and
has offices in seven other cities Bengaluru, Chennai,
Hyder abad, Kol kat a, Mumbai , Pune and
Thiruvananthapuram.
To be an effective and engaging global trade
organisation, complimented by the pillars of trust and
credibility.
NASSCOMs mission is to deepen the IT-BPM industrys
footprint in its core markets and beyond, building
strategic partnerships with its customers. It seeks to
establish India as a hub for innovation and professional
services.
NASSCOMs mission is also to expand the countrys pool
of relevant and skilled talent and harness the benefits of
ICT to drive inclusive and balanced growth.
Transform Business, Transform India is the overall
objective of NASSCOM and its member organisations.
NASSCOM members are organisations in India
engaged in the business of IT Services, BPM, Software
Products, Engineering Design, Internet, E-commerce
and Gaming. Organisations that provide services to the
IT-BPM industry are institutional members of NASSCOM.

service providers with an India presence, and global in-
house centres (GICs) of foreign corporations are equally
represented in the membership of NASSCOM.
NASSCOM undertakes several initiatives and works with
multiple stakeholders within the global IT-BPM eco-
system:
NASSCOM collaborates with the Government of India
at the centre and states to build a policy framework
that is conducive to the growth of the IT-BPM industry
in the country.

practices and experiences, and mentor smaller
organisations that are still on the learning curve.
NASSCOM undertakes several devel opment
initiatives to spur the growth of the sector.

It conducts industry research, surveys, and studies

to provide factual perspectives on the industry and
the growth opportunities ahead.
Events
It organises national and international events to
showcase new opportunities, collaborate, build
thought leadership and facilitate networking.
Forums
Industry Forums launched by NASSCOM cater to the
needs of diverse segments and build specific
programmes that can help these sectors to realise

Engineering Services (ER&D)


The Forum works with the industry to devise
strategies that will drive the Engineering
Research and Design (ER&D) sector, enabling it
to emerge as a hub of global innovation.
Gaming
With gaming emerging as a growth opportunity,
the Forum works with stakeholders to enhance
visibility for the sector.
Global In-house Centres (GICs)
NASSCOM continues to build strategies for the
growth of what were earlier referred to as
captives. The Forum focuses on sharing best
practices and value addition frameworks to
help GICs emerge as strategic centres.
Remote Infrastructure Management (RIM)
RIM and Managed Services are going to
emerge as of the biggest markets for the
industry going forward. NASSCOM is working
through this forum to define the areas of growth
within the segment and work with the industry to
address challenges in these spheres.
Quality
This Forum keeps NASSCOM members abreast
of the developments taking place in the quality
space, benchmarking practices and building
leadership on standards development.
Expanding partnerships in existing markets and
building opportunities in new markets is a key priority
for NASSCOM. This is enabled through an effective
engagement with international stakeholders, the
government, customers and associations to
collaborate on international policy, business
partnerships, MoUs and business delegations.
NASSCOM is committed to promoting and nurturing
small-and-medium companies within the IT-BPM
industry. It does so through its Emerge Product Group,
a one-stop-platform that uses online and offline
sessions to promote mentorship and help members
evolve winning sales and marketing, partnership and
funding strategies.

Workforce Development
Enhancing employability and access to a skilled
talent pool is a critical enabler for Indias
competitiveness. NASSCOM is engaged across a
broad spectrum of academia, industry and
governments to devise policies, curriculum and
assessments to achieve the above objective.
Use of technology and business services is gaining
increased adoption across governments, corporates
and smal l and medi um busi nesses (SMBs).
NASSCOMs focus is to engage with these
stakeholders and build initiatives that promote public-
private partnerships and standards and recognise
excellence in IT adoption.
NASSCOM in partnership with the industry has
created specific programmes and awards that
encourage innovation, security best practices and
development of tier 2/3 cities.
In order to promote balanced growth across India
and build a sustainable IT-BPO industry, NASSCOM
engages with its members on critical issues related to
corporate social responsibility (CSR), enhancing
diversity, inclusive growth and Green IT.
In order to enhance the employability of the talent
pool in the country and build a secure database of
employees, NASSCOM has initiated two specific
programmes:
National Skills Registry (NSR)
NASSCOM in partnership with the industry has
developed a unique initiativethe National Skills
Registry (NSR), a national database of registered
and verified knowledge workers in the industry. This
database is managed and run by NSDL Database
Management Ltd. (NDML), a fully owned subsidiary
of National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL).
NSR aims to build a robust and credible information
repository on the knowledge professionals in the IT-
BPM sector. The benefits of NSR flow across to
clients, service providers and employees. NSR has
enhanced the value proposition of the Indian IT-
BPM sector and raised the bar on security standards
in pursuit of excellence and client satisfaction.

NASSCOM Assessment of Competence (NAC) is an
assessment and certification framework that ensures
a steady supply of quality professionals to meet the
present and future requirements of the IT-BPM
industry. NAC aims to create a robust and continuous
pipeline of talent through standard assessment and
certification. It also helps to provide insights into the
training and development needs of talent and helps
governments and universities craft customised talent
development initiatives and programmes. This
framework is available to the IT industry (NAC-Tech)
as well as the BPM sector (NAC).
NASSCOM has contributed to the development of three
organisations aimed at focusing on data security,
corporate social responsibility (CSR) and E-governance.
The Data Security Council of India (DSCI) is a not-for-
profit organisation established in 2008 with the key
objective of building a credible and committed
body to uphold data privacy and security
standards. The mission of DSCI is to build the
trustworthiness of Indian organisations as global
sourcing service providers and to send out a
message to clients worldwide that India is a secure
destination for outsourcing. Its aim is also to reiterate
that in India, privacy and protection of customer
data is enshrined in the global best practices
followed by the industry.
NASSCOM Foundation (NF)
NASSCOM Foundation (NF) was set up as a trust in
2001. It was instituted with the aim of using
information and communication technologies for
development (ICT for D), and to catalyse corporate
social responsibility (CSR) initiatives within the Indian
IT-BPM industry. By implementing a diverse range of
programmes, NF is taking information and
communication tools to underserved communities
across the country. It is also channelising the
immense potential of the IT-BPM industry towards
socio-economic development of the nation.

Incorporated in 2002, the National Institute for Smart
Governance (NISG) is a Section 25 organisation set
up in public-private partnership with NASSCOM, the
Government of India and the Government of
NASSCOM Assessment of Competence (NAC)

GOVERNMENT POLICY ISSUES
NASSCOM has been working closely with both the union
and state governments of India to create a regulatory
climate that is conducive to the growth of the IT-BPM
industry in the country. The highlights of its key
engagements with the government and their outcome
are as follows:
Union Budget Proposals
NASSCOM submitted its budget memorandum to the
Ministry of Finance, making recommendations on key
direct and indirect tax issues impacting the IT-BPM
industry. The budget proposals were compiled in close
consultation with member organisations.
The pre-budget recommendations were centred
around five broad policy imperatives:
1. Rolling out strategic initiatives on cyber security,
and IT-led interventions to bridge development
gaps and address societal needs around
healthcare, education and governance
2. Enabling entrepreneurship through the National
Mission, easing the Compliance Burden, removing
dual levyVAT and Service Tax, TDS on Internet
downloads, and tailoring incentives for the sector
3. Enhancing Indias competitiveness by ensuring
thatexisting SEZ operational difficulties were
addressed by modifying the rules and issuing
cl ari fi cati ons, rati onal i si ng transfer pri ci ng
assessments and safe harbour, providing APA
guidance, extending expense deduction benefits
to training and R&D expenses, allowing legitimate
tax deductions under the various tax incentives,
making available refunds and rebates as offered
under various export promotion schemes, and
aligning the definition of royalty with international
standards
4. Building India into an innovation hub by extending
the benefits available to IT services to R&D services
and extending R&D promotion and support
schemes for the software sector
5. Coming up with new Service Tax rules and
regulations relating to the treatment of R&D
services as export, classifying BPM services as
intermediary, and detailing transactions between
head office and branch office as well as the new
service tax refund formula for SEZs
6. Meeting growth and development goals by helping
develop tier 2 and 3 cities, encouraging domestic
adoption of technology, and creating a favorable
environment for repatriation of profits
Tax Policy and Tax Administration
Constitution of the Rangachary Committee to
review Taxation of Development Centres and the IT
Sector
In an effort to bring clarity and transparency into the
taxation of Development Centres and the IT sector,
the Prime Minister constituted a committee under
the former Chairman of the Central Board of Direct
Taxes (CBDT), N. Rangachary, to review and
expedite the required changes. NASSCOM
engaged very closely with the committee,
discussing industry issues and global practices and
making recommendations, with the active support
of the industry. The issues that were raised with the
committee included those related to Transfer
Pricing, Safe Harbour provisions and Direct Taxes,
which focused on denials of legitimate tax
exemptions provided for in the IT Act under various
incentive packages offered by the government.
? Transfer Pricing
NASSCOM was at the forefront requesting for Safe
Harbour notifications and rolling out of an Advance
Pricing Agreement to address uncertainty and
di sputes i n Tr ansf er Pr i ci ng assessments.
Recommendations were made pertaining to Safe
Harbour for the sector, and also for rationalised
assessments that needed to be used to arrive at
Safe Harbour margins. Business models and nature
of R&D services and software development were
detailed, and it was recommended that the profit
split method be avoided.
? Denials of Tax exemptions
The Government of India has in the past offered
several tax incentives for exports under the STPI
scheme, the SEZ Act and the FTP. Contrary to the
provisions made by the government to allow tax
exemptions to the IT sector as an incentive, tax
assessors have been denying previously granted
exemptions after much scrutiny and delay. The
pretext for denial are several from onsite services
being classified as deputation of manpower, to not
acknowledging the importance of Statement of
Works in the hierarchy of agreements, to classifying

development, etc.

NASSCOM has been in close contact with the CBDT
(Central Board of Direct Taxes) in all matters related
to Direct Taxes. In addition, for International Tax,
NASSCOM is working closely with the team of DGIT
(Director General of International Taxation) sharing
industry concerns pertaining to arbitrary and
inconsistent Transfer Pricing assessments and the
need for practice guidelines. NASSCOM has also
made recommendations on the essential elements
of rationalised assessments.
Negative List of Services
The industry this year came up with a new negative
list tax regime for service taxes. While the implications
and benefits are yet to be realised, there were
several hiccups related to the rules framed, as the
existing systems migrated. NASSCOM actively
provided inputs to the CBEC (Central Board of Excise
and Customs) on possible difficulties and suggested
changes to be incorporated so that the operations of
BPO, R&D testing services and SEZ operations did not
face difficulties.
Service Tax Refunds
While the new rules on Service Tax were welcome,
legacy issues like delay/rejection of service tax
refunds continued to create problems. NASSCOM
represented the issue on refunds of Service Tax on
input services used for providing output services in
exports. The issue has been causing undue hardship
to exporters for many years. Taking into account the
proposal submitted by NASSCOM, a trade notice was
issued for the NCR region and a regional advisory
group formed in Karnataka to specifically resolve the
deadlock of mounting delays and rejections in
Service Tax refunds. Industry meetings with tax
officials were organised in all the regions and face-to-
face discussions on the issue facilitated by
NASSCOM.
Advisory Groups on International Tax and Indirect tax
The Government had constituted two Advisory
Groups, one on International Tax and another on
indirect tax earlier in the year, after the industry had
raised alarm bells on certain provisions proposed in
the budget. NASSCOM, the only sectoral association,
was invited to be on both the Advisory groups
chaired by the Revenue Secretary. These groups
were largely dormant and following repeated
requests, were activated in December, 2012.
NASSCOM will use this platform to engage with the
government on tax policy and administration.
Multi-level TDS on Packaged Software Distribution

The clarifications issued on the definition of royalty
had direct impact on payments from the sale of
software. NASSCOM, along with software industry
product leaders in India and ISODA (Infotech
Software Dealers Association), took up the issue of
multi-level tax at every stage of the distribution
network and associated cash flow constraints. The
Government recognised the difficulty and issued
clarifications to remove the multi-level TDS. While this
has offered relief, there are implementation issues
that need to be addressed, which are being taken
up with the Tax Policy and Legislation unit of the
Ministry of Finance.
E-commerce
The working group on online payments constituted by
the Ministry of Finance under the Chairmanship of Kiran
Karnik submitted a report identifying issues related to
technology infrastructure and charges for online
payments. Taking note of the lower risk in debit card
transactions as pointed out in the report, the Reserve
Bank of India reduced the MDR (Merchant Discount
Rate) on debit cards by 0.75 per cent for purchases up
to ? 2000, and fixed at 1 per cent for purchases above
that, from the prevailing rates of 2-3 per cent. This has
become effective from September, 2012. Continuing
the initiative in this area, a partnership with IDRBT
(Institute for Development and Research in Banking
Technology), Hyderabad has been proposed and it is
expected that with the participation of banks and the
industry, the online payment processes will be analysed
and made more robust to improve the user experience.
Funding for start-ups

The DeitY (Department of Electronics and Information
Technology), Government of India under its 12th Plan
recommendations and also the draft IT policy is looking
at a fund of ? 1000 crore for small companies.
NASSCOM is working with the DeitY on the specific
modalities of how this funding can be executed.
SEZ ActCurrent operational issues
There are several operational difficulties in SEZs that
companies face from time-to-time. NASSCOM
organised an industry meeting with the Additional
Secretary, Department of Commerce, Government of
I ndi a and s ubs equent l y s ubmi t t ed s ever al
representations to the department highlighting the
concerns and the need for action.
The issue for implementing simplified Softex (Software
export declaration) approvals in SEZ in line with STPI was

discussed for instance. NASSCOM shared the STPI
experience with the Department of Commerce and
with the support of DeitY (Department of Electronics
and Information Technology) vouched for the efficacy
of the new approach. The SEZs have now been asked to
implement it across the country by the RBI.
Industry participation in framing ISO Standards for ITeS /
BPO
On behalf of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS),
NASSCOM hosted the first ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 7 Plenary in
India in 2009 and since then has been offering support
to the India Mirror Committee (IMC) of SC7 (Sub-
Committee Seven) under the JTC 1 (Joint Technical
Committee One) of ISO and the IEC, responsible for the
elaboration of Information Technology standards. SC7 is
involved in Standardisation of processes, supporting
tools and supporting technologies for the engineering
of software products and systems.
As a participating country, India has been actively
involved in framing standards in addition to responding
to specific suggestions. The IMC has been meeting
regularly and industry participation has increased
steadily. The IMC also interacts very closely with the
Indian Standards body and participates in the BIS
meeting of the LITD division in relevant committees. With
the industry attaining global status, NASSCOM has been
involved with the International Standards Organisation
(ISO) and encouraging more and more member
organisations to participate in different Working Groups.
NASSCOM will continue this strategic initiative, enabling
the Indian IT industry to transform into standards setter,
from being a follower.
Labour issues
The IT industry in Karnataka, which had previously been
granted a blanket exemption from the Industrial
Employment (Standing Orders) Act 1946, was asked to
comply with the legislation by December 31, 2012, with
exemptions given on a case-to-case basis. NASSCOM,
in consultation with members, drafted model standing
orders and with the support of the state IT department
requested for their implementation. The draft makes the
model sector specific. It replaces for instance, workers
with employees. NASSCOM has proposed that
companies list out the deviations from the model
standing order in their submissions. While the time given
to IT companies to submit the model standing order has
been now extended to March, 2013 much work remains
to be done in this area.
Approvals for Telecom R&D Services
R&D service providers for telecom have been facing
difficulties in receiving approvals for experimental

licenses and the import of equipment. NASSCOM took
up the issue with the Secretary and the Wireless Advisor
of the Department of Telecommunications. While many
issues remain to be addressed, the Department clarified
that for every additional import request, a fresh
application had to be made. Companies have
benefited from the notice even though it has added to
the cost of operations. The sector is also struggling with
environmental regulations that are applicable on the
import of used equipment and NASSCOM will engage
with the government on these issues in the coming year.
Planning Commission Committee on Angel Investment
and Early Stage Venture Capital
NASSCOM is a member of the Committee on Angel
Investment and Early Stage Venture Capital appointed
by the Planning Commission. The committee, under the
chairmanship of Sunil Mitra, former Revenue Secretary,
Government of India studied the issues in detail and
made wide ranging recommendations in a report that
were related to creating a vibrant ecosystem for
entrepreneurship and angel funding in the country.

Over the years, the focus of NASSCOMs Global
Development Trade (GTD) Programme has been to
engage with a wide variety of domestic and
international stakeholders such as governments,
customers and associations, to create regulatory
frameworks that foster trade with the Indian IT-BPM
industry, position India as a trade partner and promote
global sourcing in emerging markets and verticals.
Under this Programme, NASSCOM has also been
spotlighting Indias edge as an outsourcing destination
and the unmatched value proposition offered by the
countrys IT-BPM service providers. It has been doing so
by reaching out to influencers including legislators,
elected officials, associations, think tanks, academic
institutions, customers, regulators, Indian embassies and
the media. In 2012, NASSCOM continued to strengthen
Indias credentials as a key global IT-BPM hub by
initiating the following activities:
Issues with legislation targeted at the Indian IT Industry
by the US
Numerous bills and amendments have been proposed
in the US that intend to to curb outsourcing to countries
such as India and penalise Indian IT companies by
making them pay more towards US visa costs, thereby
hurting their competitiveness. NASSCOM continues to
work with its alliance partners to thwart legislative
attempts that have negative implications for the Indian
IT industry.
GLOBAL TRADE DEVELOPMENT

Issues of increased visa rejections by the US Consulates
in India
NASSCOM continues to work with the administrative
regime to work out solutions for the problems related
with the adjudication process.
EU-wide ICT (Intra-company transferee) visa/directive
NASSCOM has been working towards an EU-wide ICT
visa. In March, 2012 a NASSCOM led delegation visited
Brussels to meet with key stakeholders to have a
broader adoption of the ICT directive. NASSCOMs
outreach activities to build consensus on this key issue
continues.
Data Security norms of the European Union
NASSCOM and DSCI have been using the window of
opportunity presented by the India-EU FTA negotiations
to get India declared a data-secure country. By rough
estimates, such a step will increase revenues from EU to
the extent of USD 7 billion per annum by way of
increased offshoring and cost savings to companies
leveraging India in their business model.
Issues of restrictions on UK visas
NASSCOM has been working towards a liberalised visa
regime in the UK for technology industries. Until now, its
efforts have kept strict measures at bay such as cap on
visas, etc. for the visa category that is used by the
industry to transfer skilled workers to the UK. NASSCOM is
also contemplating a detailed report that could
highlight contributions of the sector in the broader UK
economy by way of job creations and competitiveness.
Visa issues with Canadian authorities
NASSCOM had made a detailed submission on the visa
problems faced by the industry in Canada, which had
been taken up and addressed through welcome
changes in the countrys visa adjudication process.
NASSCOM also launched its Canada chapter with more
than 17 companies on board and nominated Country
Council members to iron out mobility issues. NASSCOM
continues to steer services side negotiations for India-
Canada FTAs.
Negotiation of a Social Security Agreement (SSA) with
Canada
NASSCOM has been instrumental in concluding
negotiations for an IndoCanada totalisation treaty.
The effective date is yet to be announced. A separate
SSA needs to be signed with the province of Quebec as
it is not covered under part of the SSA.
IndoGerman Totalisation treaty and Immigration issues
The current agreement between Germany and India
allows for exemption to visiting employees (posted
workers) from contributing towards the local social
security system. However, Germany has changed the
interpretation of its immigration law restricting access to
specialist visas by Indian technology workers. Due to
these changes, there are some 5,000 Indian technology
workers who are being denied some benefits of the
India-Germany Social Security Agreement. NASSCOM is
working with the Ministry of Overseas and Indian Affairs
and the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation
(EPFO) to address the issues with the German
authorities.
International Workers norms revised by Employees'
Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) in India
NASSCOM has been instrumental in sorting out
problems related the treatment of International Workers
and their tax liability with EPFO. There have been many
circulars issued to post NASSCOMs intervention, for
instance, for the taxation of International Workers
treatment, German Certificate of Clearance issues,
amongst others. NASSCOM continues to work closely
with the Ministry of Overseas and Indian Affairs and the
EPFO, ironing out issues related to various totalisation
treaties.
Dealing with visa issues in India
NASSCOM has written to the Ministry of Home Affairs
suggesting the introduction of norms governing visas of
interns and trainers. Suggestions also include improving
the registration process for foreign expatriates.
Mobility issues and FTA negotiations with Australia
NASSCOM has been working very closely with the
Ministry of Commerce to address issues related to the
formal negotiations of the IndiaAustralia FTA. A
detailed submission to the Department of Commerce
was sent on behalf of the industry demanding
liberalisation of visa issues, increase in allowances
permitted to be part of salary and an increase in the
industrys share of the government procurement sector.
Sessions on Exploring Africa for Business Opportunities
These sessions were organised as a part of NASSCOMs
initiative to explore new geographies. Over the past
couple of years, Africa has been one of the faster
growing markets worldwide in terms of adopting ICT
and communication technologies and is becoming
one of the most important markets for the Indian IT
industry. The liberalisation of Africa continues and most
countries have established regulatory bodies to ensure

a fair, competitive and enabling environment. A series
of knowledge session were organised in the cities of
Mumbai, Chennai and Bengaluru in July, 2012 for
member companies.
Sessions on Opportunities in Canada for Indian IT and
BPM industry
Knowledge sessions focusing on the ICT sectors of the
Provinces of Qubec and Ontario were organised in
Mumbai, Bengaluru and Delhi in August, 2012. The
sessions talked about the ICT opportunities in these
regions for business and innovation. Canada has
created a culture of technology innovation through
its people, research and development infrastructure,
knowledge and opportunities. It has more than 30,000
ICT firms that generate over USD 140 billion in revenues.
This coupled with Canadas geographic proximity to
the US, political stability, superior workforce, quality of
life and similar business culture make Canada a
preferred destination for doing business for international
ICT companies.
VISITING INTERNATIONAL DELEGATIONS
Business and Government Delegation from Cologne,
Germany
NASSCOM hosted a high-level business delegation from
the city of Cologne region in Germany. The objective
was to promote our common endeavour to enable
sustainable trade and economic development
between the two countries. The delegation was led by
the Mayor of the City of Cologne, Jrgen Roters and
drew 25 visitors from various companies and the
government.
INDIAN DELEGATIONS GOING OVERSEAS
Delegation to Australia: India as partner country for
CeBIT Australia 2012
India was the partner country for CeBIT Australia 2012
held in Sydney from May 2224, 2012. It was prestigious
to be the partner country and there was a great
opportunity to showcase the strength of India in the IT
sector in Australia and to all the other participating
countries and patrons at the event. The delegation was
led by the Minister of State for Communications and IT,
Sachin Pilot. There were 54 Indian companies and over
90 delegates which made this the largest Indian
contingent to participate at CeBIT Australia. This was an
effort to try and position India and Indian companies as
innovative and entrepreneurial rather than just
outsourcing hubs. The message was about partnership
and about also exploring India as a market.
The inaugural NASSCOM Innovation Student Awards
were presented by Hon. Sachin Pilot, Minister of State in
the Ministry of Communications and Information
Technology, Government of India; Hon Greg Pearce,
Minister of Finance, NSW and Paul Toole, MP and
Parliamentary Secretary to the Deputy Premier and for
Asia-Pacific Trade at the CeBIT ICT Celebration Dinner
on May 23, 2012 at Sydney. The awards were given
under the categories IT Innovation and IT enabled
Business Innovation.
Delegation to Germany
NASSCOM organised a delegation to Cologne,
Germany from June 13-14, 2012. The delegation visited
Germany at the time of the BITKOMNASSCOM
Conference in Cologne. It was also invited to the
Annual Meet of the Indo-German Chamber of
Commerce in Dsseldorf. A significant number of
German companies already doing business or looking
for partnerships with Indian companies were present at
both these events. The key objective of the delegation
was to expose Indian companies to the ICT environment
in Germany, create for them networking opportunities
with companies in Germany and explore business and
M&A avenues.
Delegation to China (Shanghai and Nanjing)
NASSCOM in association with the government of India
organised a business delegation to China (Shanghai
and Nanjing) from September 57, 2012. The delegation
was led by Krishnakumar Natarajan, Vice-Chairman,
NASSCOM and MD and CEO, MindTree. Representing
the Indian government was Dr. Anita Bhatnagar Jain,
Joint Secretary, Department of Electronics and
Information Technology, Ministry of Communications
and Information Technology, Government of India.
There were approximately 15 member companies that
were a part of the delegation. Apart from various
roundtable discussions and one-to-one meetings, the
delegation also participated in the 8th China (Nanjing)
International Software Product and Information Service
Trade Fair. Its key agenda was to have focused
meetings with the Chinese government and industry to
facilitate higher market access for the Indian industry, as
well as reduce non-tariff barriers.
Delegation to Africa (Nigeria, Uganda and Kenya)
NASSCOM organised its third delegation to Africa from
September 1621, 2012. The emphasis of the delegation
was on creating awareness among local companies
about India, identifying potential companies for
partnership and building a long term engagement
programmme. Most Governments in Africa have
committed to use ICT in most of their activities in order to

facilitate rapid socio-economic development.
The delegation visited Nigeria in West Africa and
Uganda and Kenya in East Africa. Nigeria is the second
biggest economy in Africa and the largest in terms of its
population and opportunity. Kenya is the most
aggressive ICT economy in the eastern region with the
government being proactive and willing to invest in the
sector, closely followed by Uganda. In Uganda the
delegation participated in an East African conference
where it met with representative of other countries like
Rwanda, Tanzania and Malawi. The NASSCOM
delegation had representatives of 15 companies and
was led by the President, NASSCOM. The visit provided
delegates with an excellent exposure to the African
continent.
Business delegation to the World Congress on
Information Technology (WCIT), Canada
NASSCOM organised its first ever business delegation to
Canada from October 2225, 2012 led by the President,
NASSCOM. Over the years, WCIT has become the
world's leading information technology gathering,
featuring prominent speakers, leading thinkers, and
business leaders from all over the world. Besides
attending the conference, NASSCOM also took up
issues that affected Indian investments in Canada with
policymakers. NASSCOM additionally launched its
Canada Chapter with almost 20 members, which
included Indian, global and Canadian companies.
MoUs SIGNED
MoU with Belarus HTP (Belarus High Tech Park)
NASSCOM signed an MoU with the Belarus HTP. The HTP is
one of the leaders among innovative IT clusters in
Central and Eastern Europe. The Belarusian software
services sector has been developing at a rapid pace.
The country's reputation for scientific and IT excellence,
complemented by the competitive labour market has
attracted the interest of numerous IT-intensive
companies.
MoU with BPAP (Business Processing Association of the
Philippines)
On the occasion of the visit of the Vice President of
Philippines, H.E. Jejomar Binay, BPAP and NASSCOM
revisited the MoU signed in 2006 to promote
development and growth of the global IT-BPM industry
by rendering mutual assistance and co-operation.
Some of the points included in the 2012 MoU are as
follows:
1. Conducting a joint study to show the positive
impact that outsourcing has on the respective
economies of India and the Philippines and the rest
of the world; and also how it has created value in
alternate business models by delivering innovation,
bui l di ng capabi l i ti es, and dri vi ng process
excellence.
2. Working together for the development and sharing
of world-class management practices, a code of
conduct, and quality standards to ensure growth
and global competitiveness of their respective
members.

3. Creating a Joint Positive Impact Campaign which
helps to create a positive image of BPM as an
aspirational career choice.

through the NASSCOM Exemplary Talent (NExT)
Practices Awards 2012, and highlight relevant practices
that would serve as guidelines for the rest of the HR
industry.

EMERGING MARKETS
Emerging Markets Series: Latin America and the
Caribbean (LAC)
The report analysed the LAC region, highlighting the
landscape, opportunities and challenges it offered to
the IT-BPM sector. It also identified certain key action
items for respective governments and industry to
encourage investments and growth in the sector.

NASSCOM EMERGEOUT ConclaveKolkata
The 9th edition of the EMERGEOUT Conclave was held in
Kolkata on January 12, 2012. The theme of the conclave
was Sustain Your Business, which focused on
customers, empl oyees and competi tors. The
conference drew participation from over 160 delegates
representing 74 companies, and 27 speakers.
The EMERGE East showcase identified and honoured
emerging IT companies of the Eastern region that were
redefining the benchmark of excellence for the next
generation of SMEs. A pre-EMERGEOUT workshop on
Making the sales process more predictable,
sustainable and high performance was held on
January 11, 2012. It drew participation from 42
participants representing 30 companies.
NASSCOM India Leadership Forum
The 20th edition of NASSCOMs flagship eventthe
India Leadership Forum 2012 was held in Mumbai from
February 14-16, 2012. It was centred around the theme
of Hyper Specialisation. During 2012, the Forum set
new benchmarks in terms of exposing the industry to
thought leaders. Delegates participated in break away
sessions like Master Classes, Idea Incubators, and
Gurukul, which addressed the specific needs and issues
related to the sector. The conclave drew a healthy mix
of industry and non-industry leaders, academicians,

Over 120 speakers addressed more than 45 sessions and
1, 500 del egates. The conf er ence al so had
representation from more than 25 countries.

The second edition of the GIC conclave was held in
Delhi from March 20-21, 2012. The two-day conclave
was centred around the theme of Co-creating Value.

released on the sidelines of the conference and

SURGE
A one-day conference for emerging companies was
organised in Chennai on June 26, 2012. It was designed
to help aspiring enterprises, particularly small and
medium businesses to grow faster and move ahead of
competition. The conference provided an opportunity
for user organisations to meet with peers, experts and
service providers. It featured more than 25 speakers and
was attended by around 150 delegates.
NASSCOM HR Summit
The 9th edition of the annual HR Summit was held in
Chennai on July 25-26, 2012. The theme of the summit
was Find, Train and Retain Future Ready Leaders. The
summit had special sessions focused around topics such
as Talent development, Occupational Standards,
Minimising Human Capital Risks, Diversity and
Rebranding of BPO. It featured more than 50 speakers
was attended by over 550 delegates.
To recognise the efforts and commitment of
organisations towards implementing industry best-
practices, NASSCOM announced the winners of the
NASSCOM EXemplary Talent (NExT) Practices Awards
2012 at the Summit.

NASSCOM EMERGEOUT ConclaveGurgaon
The Emergeout Conclave was held in Gurgaon on
August 8, 2012. It was a heady mix of interesting
keynotes, panel discussions, side conversations and
interactions between a very large set of new
companies. The conclave featured over 40 speakers
and drew over 450 delegates. The third series of the
AppFAME contest was also held during the conclave,
where companies building interesting applications on
the mobile and tablet platforms showcased their
offerings. Emerge 50 as a programme has been running
since 2009, and this year seven companies that had
crossed the Emerge milestone of Rs. 50 crore were
felicitated at the conclave.
Cloud and Mobility Summit
The Cloud and Mobility Summit was held in Bengaluru on
August 21, 2012. The theme of the summit was Enabling
business value through emerging technologies. It drew
healthy participation from smaller and mid-tier
companies experimenting or expanding into the Cloud
and the mobility space. The conclave featured more
than 45 speakers and was attended by over 300
delegates.
NASSCOM BPO Strategy Summit
The 11th edition of the annual BPO Strategy Summit was
held in Gurgaon from September 5-6, 2012. The theme
of the Summit was The BPO Story: Pains and Gains of
Remodeling/Reinventing. On the sidelines of the

NASSCOM Engineering Summit
The Engineering Summit 2012 was held in Pune on
September 27-28, 2012 based on the theme
Engineering Innovations for a Better World. The summit
had over 400 delegates and more than 35 speakers. A
report titled: Global ER&D: Indias Maturing Ecosystem
was also released on the sidelines of the conference.

NASSCOM EMERGEOUT ConclavePune
The Emergeout Conclave was hosted for the first time in
Pune on October 12, 2012. The conclave was supported
by other associations like SEAP, Pune Tech, SME Start-up
club and TiE Pune. 20 start-up companies had an
opportunity to present their story at the VC roundtable
session held at the conclave. The AppFAME contest was
also organised during the conference, where
companies building interesting mobile applications
showcased their products. The conclave was attended
by more than 100 delegates and drew participation
from around 120 companies. Almost 90 percent of these
companies belonged to the start-up and SME
categories and were working in the areas of product
development, services, mobility and the gaming
applications.
NASSCOM Game Developers Conference
The Game Developers Conference was held in Pune
on November 2-3, 2012 and centred around the theme:
Rise of the Indies. The conference was attended by
CXOs of gaming organisations and a large number of
games developers. It brought together some of the best
brains from the gaming fraternity to share knowledge,
network and showcase their studios. The event drew
over 800 delegates, who included representatives of
gaming companies and the IT industry. The first edition
of India's Game Directory was also released during the
conference.
NASSCOM Product Conclave
The 9th edition of the annual Product Conclave held in
Bengaluru on November 7-8, 2012 brought together the
product ecosystem of India. It drew over 1,400
delegates and featured 129 speakers. The sessions
included panel discussions, workshops, product
launches, CIO showcase sessions and pitches to buyers
and investors.
The NASSCOM Emerge 50 Awards programme
annually identifies, showcases and supports the top 50
high-potential emerging companies that are redefining
the benchmarks of excellence for the IT industry. The
winners of the Emerge League of 10 (top 10 product
startups) were spotlighted and felicitated on the first
day of the Conclave.
The IP4Biz Enterprise Software Spotlight was held on the
second day of the conclave, where five product
companies presented to a panel of CIOs and received
feedback on their products. This gave them an
opportunity to learn about how they could better
position their products and a follow an improved
approach.

Transforming from Business Process Outsourcing (BPO)
to Business Process Management (BPM)
The Business Process Outsourcing industry in India
continues to remain strong and vibrant despite being
impacted by the recent economic gridlock. It has been
rapidly transforming itself from business process
outsourcing to business process management; which is
the single most critical factor that has helped it buck the
global trend and maintain its leadership position across
the globe. The industry has been able to successfully
position itself as a partner to customers and changed
the way service is being delivered, thereby creating a
broader impact on clients.
Industry led research study on Perception of the BPM
Industry by diverse stakeholders
The Business Process Management (BPM) industry has
performed admirably well in the last decade. This
growth and changing landscape has also brought
about a change in the employee profile in the last few
years. The industry today employs an extremely diverse
employee profile. This has led to the need for the sector
to reposition its attractiveness to all stakeholders.
The BPM Forum has taken up the initiative to assess the
perception held by various stakeholders on the BPM
industry and position it appropriately to them.
Accordingly, the forum has conducted an industry wide

The EMERGE Community website is a private meeting
place where NASSCOM members interact and work
together with each other. The objective of the
Community is to help senior management/thought
leaders of SME organisations exchange ideas, learn
from other decision and opinion makers and use the key
takeaways to improve their businesses. There are over
4,000 Group Members who help facilitate partnerships.
Launch of the Technology/Knowledge Worker Health
Plan targeted at small and medium enterprises
NASSCOM enter ed i nto a Memor andum of
Understanding (MoU) with the Oriental Insurance Co.
Ltd. to introduce a common health insurance
programme, called the Technology/Knowledge
Worker Health Plan, for its members. The programme
has been created after widespread consultation with
NASSCOM members and is based on their needs and
challenges.
The key objectives of the programme are to provide a
comprehensive, flexible and affordable health
insurance cover for employees of the IT sector. The plan
is particularly aimed at small and medium companies,
bringing technology into the domain of health
insurance management. The plan provides a single
window approach, empowering the customer to
make informed choices. Its advantages include better
benefits, greater flexibility, lower premiums, better
predictability, and end-to-end support. More than 100
companies have signed up for this plan.
Fridays 2.0 sessions on Organisational Growth through
Personal Branding
These sessions were held in Bengaluru on April 13, 2012
and in Pune on May 3, 2012. The objective of the sessions
was to understand how an organisation could build a
strong brand and what the various ways for individuals
to create visibility for themselves, which in turn would
help enhance the brand image of the organisation.
Several SMEs and medi um scal e compani es
participated in this session as it was relevant to them and
greatly appreciated its content.

First series of Mentoring Session in Nagpur
The first series of Mentoring Session was held in Nagpur
on June 21, 2012. The focus of the Mentorship Sessions is
to help the leadership of companies to develop a keen
sense of what needs to be done to take the business
model to the next level. The session was on Talent
Spotting and Employee Engagement and was
supported by the VED (Vi darbha Economi c
Development) Council and VASE (the Vidarbha
Association of Software Exporters).
Fridays 2.0 session on Linking Diversity to Bottom Line
The session was held in Bengaluru on September 14,
2012 and explained how a diversity agenda could be
linked to the business objectives in a manner that the
organisational stakeholders joined the journey. The
session explained the dimensions to be included while
defining the inclusivity agenda and how the agenda
could be linked to business goals and metrics using a
stakeholder mapping principle. Using the stakeholder
mapping model, the session further explained how
organisations could go beyond headcount as a
metric and link measurements to business goals. Lastly,
the session highlighted the tips and tricks that could be
used in inclusivity implementations across various
companies. The session drew participation from 70
people representing 45 companies.
IP4Biz Launch at Interop 2012
IP4Biz is a showcase platform for Made-in-India Software
Products that are designed for enterprise users. This new
initiative was launched formally at the Interop event in
Mumbai on October 10, 2012.

Participation in the NASSCOMBITKOM seminar held in
Cologne, Germany
A delegation from the Indian Engineering industry
participated in the NASSCOMBITKOM seminar held in
Cologne, Germany. The event was attended by the
representatives of over 17 India based IT companies
offering Engineering solutions based in Germany. The
delegation was led by N. Chandrasekaran, Chairman,
NASSCOM and CEO and Managing Director, TCS, and
Ravi Pandit, Chair, NASSCOM Engineering Forum.

Creation of Special Interest Group for Telecom,
Construction and Heavy Engineering and Auto verticals

A Special Interest Group (SIG) was created to focus on
the Auto, Telecom and Construction and Heavy
Engineering segments. The SIG will work to identify
vertical specific opportunities and challenges, and

promote industry best practices. It will also examine the
key drivers, work on the talent needs and identify the
government interfaces that will be required.
Regional Chapters of Engineering Services Forum
The Regional Chapters of the Forum help in
propagating the vision of the forum and the growth of
the segment. Regional chapters have been created at
Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi-NCR, Hyderabad, Mumbai
and Pune.

Engineering Talent Council
The focus of the Engineering Talent Council is to define
curriculum and engagement interventions in colleges
to create a pool of engineering students that are
relevant for the industry. The council is aligning its
programme with the Sector Skill Council of NSDC
(National Skills Development Corporation).
Game developer meet-ups
The Gaming Forum has five active city chaptersin
Mu mbai , De l h i , Hy de r abad, P u n e an d
Bengaluruwhich hosted developer meet-ups during
the year. Various workshops were conducted on the
technical aspects of gaming across these cities to bring
together gaming organisations and gaming enthusiasts
to share their experiences. These meet-ups also helped
organisations to share their best practices for the benefit
of the gaming sector at large.
Forums inaugural meet-up at Ahmedabad
The Gaming Forum had its inaugural meet-up at
Ahmedabad on September 15, 2012. In the past, there
were not many opportunities for either gaming
companies or enthusiasts to come together and share
their experiences. This platform was specially designed
to act as a bridge, bringing the community closer to

also facilitated interactions between upcoming gamers
and key gaming companies in India. The event was
attended by 50 game developers from the Gujarat
Technological University and other private Engineering
colleges. It was was hosted by the Department of
Science and Technology, Government of Gujarat.
BlackBerrys Got-Game Port-a-Thon series launched in
association with NASSCOMs Gaming Forum
NASSCOMs Gaming Forum was exclusively chosen by
BlackBerry to jointly launch its thrilling challenge for
game developers across different cities in India. The
Got Game Port-a-Thon, a series of live events in various
cities of the Asia Pacific region was rolled out by
BlackBerry in association with NASSCOMs Gaming
Forum in Hyderabad on December 12, 2012 and
Mumbai on December 14, 2012. The aim of the contest
was to encourage creative games organisations to port
their applications to the new BlackBerry 10 platform
and receive exciting awards.
GIC FORUM
The GIC Forum held meetings throughout the year, with
companies sharing their success stories with member
organisations. The GIC Fforum helps business leaders to
interact informally and share thoughts, ideas, issues and
market trends with the aim idea of making each of them
more effective in performing their ever- changing,
dynamic and demanding roles. The Forum also held
discussions around goals, vision, challenges and
opportunities for GICs in India.
Exclusive CEO roundtable sessions were organised for
GIC leaders in India, enabling them to key leadership in
India from GICs to share their thoughts and experiences

How can GICs influence innovation in their parents

GIC HR sub-group
The GIC HR sub-group focuses on leadership
development, mentoring, attracting talent, knowledge
transfer, talent development and talent retention.
Workshops were held during 2012 to provide member
companies with insights on give an insight into how
important it was for organisations to is for an
organisation to align their talent practices with their
business model imperatives and how they could to
establish meaningful talent acquisition, development,
and retention strategies that were is absolutely in tune
with their an organisations geographic, functional, and
business realities.
GIC Chapters
The GIC chapters are present in Bengaluru, Chennai,
Delhi-NCR, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Pune. Each of the
Chapter has a Chairperson to drive the engagement
amongst the members, to structure the common
challenges to be addressed and address any other
local operational challenges.
Session on Integrating Agile Practices with a Global
Delivery Model
The session was held in Hyderabad on June 21, 2012.
Heitor Roriz Filho, world renowned Agile subject matter
expert and coach from Brazil was the keynote speaker.
In this session experts shared their experiences
regarding implementing Agile in a global delivery
context for a wide range of engagements. Post the
session, there was a panel discussion with industry
leaders chaired by Vishal Sharma, Director, Deloitte
Consulting India. The half-day session was attended by
more than 130 delegates. The participants gained a
comprehensive understanding of the best practices
followed by successful practitioners.
Session on IT Governance and Information Security
The session was held in Hyderabad on September 27,
2012 and introduced to attendees the concepts of
information security governance and security
programmes and how they could be deployed within
any environment. Speakers at the session talked about
how Information was an organisations most important
asset and needed to be appropriately protected. They
highlighted that although governance and security
programmes were actively discussed, not many
organisations or security professionals fully understand
them and the relationship between these two

concepts. The session was attended by more than 80
participants including CXOs/Top Management, Quality
Heads, Software Engineers, Project Managers and
Project Leaders. The session was followed by a panel
discussion with industry members.
Workshop on Agility in Technology
NASSCOM partnered with the India Scrum Enthusiasts
Community (ISEC) to conduct a workshop on Agility in
Technology: A conference on Agile Engineering
Practices. ISEC provides a common platform to the
Scrum and Agile communities across India for
knowledge and experience sharing and networking.
The workshop held in Hyderabad on November 3, 2012
discussed the benefits of Agility and technology while
focusing on the latest trends in technology for Agile
teams. The session also attempted to address the
challenges faced by developers, test engineers,
engineering managers and architects in their deliveries.
It was attended by 45 participants including Project
Managers, Coaches, ISDs, Entrepreneurs, Marketing
Teams and Developers.
IMS (Infrastructure Management Services) Apex
Committee
The Apex group of IMS leaders helps in formulating
industry initiatives for sustainable growth. The existing
steering group will continue to function as it is and the
Apex CEO committee will share the larger thought
process for strategising.
IMS Talent Development Council
The Talent Development Council is working on creating
curriculum for training and generating a workforce for
IMS. Steering committee meetings were held that were
attended by the industry, academic institutions and
third-party service providers to address the talent and
skills requirements for the IMS industry. The council is
working to create a standard test engine to assesses
suitable candidates for the sector and identify their
potential.
Regional Chapters
Regional chapters have been working to bring together
the community for sharing of best practices, which in
turn are helping address the challenges.
Session on Adopting CloudStrategies, Risks and
Experiences
The session was held on July 13, 2012 in Hyderabad and

The event help build a clear understanding of the Cloud
while discussing how businesses could leverage its
benefits by controlling the risks. The event was attended
by 150 people.
Sessions on Generation Impact on Key People
Processes
Understanding the multi-generation workforce today is
becoming a key focus for corporates, that now have
people from different generations working together. In
this context, NASSCOM and CGI India have conducted
a research on Generational Impact on key people
processesLearning, Engagement and Performance,
to fuel the dialogue on how different generations
respond to workplace motivations. The roundtable
sessions were held on June 21, 2012 in Mumbai and June
22, 2012 in Pune. They created awareness about how
different generations responded to workplace
motivations and whether systems or policies were
needed to manage each generation differently.
Cultural Roundtable
Closed door roundtable discussions were held In Delhi
and Chennai on June 26 and 27, 2012 on the issue of
Cultural Diversity in the IT and BPM industry in the Indian
context. The roundtable threw light on how
organisations perceived cultural diversity.
Workshop on 5 Winning Ideas for GenderBalancing
your workplace
The workshop was held on August 28, 2012 in
Hyderabad. It consisted of a two-hour session with
interactive role plays and case studies on implementing
new initiatives and fine tuning existing practices for a
successful Gender Diversity Programme. The session
focused on the concept of sustainable careers, the
importance of career enablers and the top five career
enablers that would help in attracting and retaining
more women in the workplace.
Online session on Linking diversity to bottom line
The session held on October 4, 2012 in Chennai and
Hyderabad provided attendees insights on the

Project LeadLeadership Development Series for
Women in Technology
NASSCOM, in collaboration with TalentSprint, launched
a programme called Project Lead, under the aegis of its
Diversity and Inclusion initiative. The aim of the
programme is to help build of a pipeline of women
leaders and equip them with strategies to negotiate in
the existing competitive environment, while remaining
simultaneously collaborative. Project Lead is aimed at
women managers in the IT industry with around eight
years of working experience, who have moved from
individual contributor roles to the management of large
global teams. A special session was hosted by
NASSCOM under this programme on December 14,
2012 i n Hyderabad. The attendees acti vel y
participated in the discussion on Decoding the X-
Factor in Leadership Development.
NASSCOM IT User Awards
Developing the domestic IT market is a key focus area
for NASSCOM. One of NASSCOMs important initiatives
for promoting IT in the domestic market is the annual
NASSCOM IT User Awards programme. The awards
create a catalytic impact by recognising the leaders in
IT adoption, within different vertical segments. The
awards acknowl edge enterpri ses whi ch have
successfully leveraged information technology to
deliver significant business value to their customers and
stakeholders. These awards have now become a
definitive benchmark for felicitating exemplary
adoption of Information technology by enterprises in
India.
The eighth edition of the IT User awards was held in
Mumbai on March 27, 2012 in partnership with Frost &
Sullivan and CNBC TV 18. The theme of the awards was
IT as a strategic lever enabling business growth and
customer service. The awards ceremony was presided
over by Sachin Pilot, Minister of State, Communications
and Information Technology and Prakash Bakshi,
Chairman, NABARD, the Guest of Honour. The awards
ceremony was attended by more than 200 CIOs of
leading enterprises, and industry leaders.
DOMESTIC MARKET, E-GOVERNANCE INITIATIVES

Regional Consultation Workshops
The Department of I nformati on Technol ogy,
Government of India in partnership with NASSCOM has
been organising a series of Regional Consultation
Workshops since September, 2010 for all States and
Union Territories. These workshops are being held under
the banner of Citizen-Centric e-GovernmentSetting
the Priorities for the Decade Ahead. The state level
workshops will be held at 50 locations. Workshops were
held in ten locations in 2012, covering several parts of
the country including Guwahati, Imphal, Kohima,
Aizwal, Surat, Shillong, Raipur, Bhopal, Jabalpur and Port
Blair. Out of the 50 workshops a total of 21 workshops
have already been organised.
The objective of these workshops is to bring Senior
Decision Makers and Stakeholders of the National e-
Governance Programme, State Government
Leadership, e-Governance Consultants, Technology
Partners, Implementing Agencies and e-Governance
Heads to a common discussion platform. The state level
workshops have created a platform for a deeper
dialogue and helped showcase the best practices and
solutions that address issues and challenges and help
accelerate e-Governance adoption in the country.
HR Policy for e-Governance
Recognising the need for specialised skill sets and
internal capacity to manage large Mission Mode NeGP
Projects, the Prime Ministers Apex Committee on e-
Governance constituted an Expert Committee under
the chairmanship of Nandan Nilekani in March 2012.
NASSCOM engaged and worked closely with the
Department of Electronics and Information Technology
(DeitY) on the development of the policy. NASSCOM
had also organised several stakeholder consultations
with e-Governance Heads of various central and state
government projects, as well as industry members
implementing these projects to develop the final
recommendations.
Technical Standards for Interoperability Framework for
e-Governance in India
NASSCOM has been driving the engagement of the
industry in focus group discussions with the Department
of Electronics and Information Technology (DeitY) and
National Informatics Centre (NIC) on the Technical
Standards for an Interoperability Framework for e-
Governance in India.
Initiatives in Policy Advocacy and Promotion of Cloud
Based services
The Ministry of Communication and Information
Technology has set up a Cloud Working Group chaired
by S. Gopalakrishnan, Co-Founder and Executive Co-
Chairman, Infosys. NASSCOM and DSCI are actively
working with this group which has members from the
Department of Electronics and Information Technology
(DeitY), different ministries of the central Government
and RBI. The working group is chartered with
developing a double- pronged strategy for growing
India as a hub for Cloud services globally, and driving
adoption of the Cloud in India across various customer
segments.
IT-ITeS Sector Skills Council
NASSCOM. in partnership with the National Skill
Development Council (NSDC) has sought and been
formally approved as the IT-ITeS Sector Skills Council of
India. The IT-ITeS Sector Skills Council (SSC) aims to:
Fulfil industry sector talent needs for quality and
quantity to enable a sustainable pipeline that is
industry ready
Research l abour market i nformati on and
intelligence to provide industry with accurate real
time inputs to assist in planning and delivery of
training.
Provide certification information and access to all
stakeholders in this ecosystem, thus reducing skill
gaps and shortages
Develop a delivery mechanism for industry relevant
training with respect to occupations identified in
career paths
Set up standards to bring global best practices into
the industry
Development of NOS (National Occupational
Standards) across verticals in the IT-BPM industry
Occupational Standards (OS) are performance
standards that individuals must achieve when carrying
out functions in the workplace, together with
specifications of the underpinning knowledge and
understanding. OS describe what an individual needs
to do, know and understand in order to carry out a
particular job role or function. Globally, OS act as a
foundation for skills development initiatives for industries
and academia. In India, the various SSCs are in the
process of creating OS for the respective industries they
represent.
Organisations can use Occupational Standards to gain
business benefits. Some of the business benefits that are
delivered by Occupational Standards are: increase in
EDUCATION INITIATIVE

business productivity, selection and recruitment,
training and development and standardisation.
Labour/Workforce Market Informati on System
(LMIS/WFMIS)
Labour/Workforce Market Informati on System,
commonly known as LMIS/WFMIS, is a platform for
manpower management that also has the ability to
collect, process, analyse, and disseminate labour
market information. LMIS/WFMIS acts as one single
source of all information available on the workforce.
Information therein must be relevant across the industry,
trade, geography, and timelines, covering information
on the necessary skills, education, and occupations in
the industry sector. LMIS/WFMIS needs to support
informed decision making, by providing research
authenticated reliable workforce market information to
the stakeholders.
The IT-ITeS Sector Skills Council NASSCOM (SSC) intends
to launch initiatives and pioneer models for scaling
quality capacity, address the workforce market needs,
and provide information in a centralised database. A
systemic approach to change and management of the
same is advocated for long term sustainability.
The SSC plans to provide the quantitative and the
qualitative information and intelligence on the labour
market using the LMIS/WFMIS portal, which will be used
for the some of the following purposes:
Conceptualise and develop a framework that
encapsulates information about the different facets
of the labour market
Scope and publish Demand-Supply market
intelligence regarding requirements at all levels and
sectors. Create a single source of all information
available on workforce/labour market across the IT-
ITeS industry
Provide the single source of information as a
common window for all information on the
workforce/l abour market to the di fferent
stakeholders, which can include government,
employers, job seekers/employed, educational
and training institutions, and industry associations
BPO Career Guide
The BPO Career Guide has been helping readers
understand the basics/fundamentals of the BPO
industry. The next version of the BPO Career Guide will
include KPO content, short video documentaries and
case studies from companies.
Employability assessment and impact analysis of skills
development
NAC (NASSCOM Assessment of Competence) and
NAC-Tech are for facilitating Entry Level Employment
for the Technology and BPM industry by assessing the
skills and competencies of students. These tests measure
the efficacy/impact of academic programmes and
have been conducted across the country. Various
state governments have been keen on taking these
initiatives forward in their respective states.
Foundation Skills in IT (FSIT)For IT Services
The IT Skills Development Council has supported the
NASSCOMMHRD FSIT course. This is the revamped
Finishing School programme launched in partnership
with the MHRD (Ministry of Human Resource and
Development) for off-campus students in select
institutes. The FSIT is an add-on programme spread over
nine modules in an Outcomes Based Format (OBF). The
FSIT Curricula Guidelines in OBF have been developed
and published for all stakeholders. FSIT Courseware,
consisting of the FSIT Trainer Guide and Student
Handbooks have been developed and published. The
Faculty Development programmes (FDPs) for FSIT have
been initiated in various states. The FSIT has been
conducted across various states in India..
Global Business Foundation Skills (GBFS)For the BPM

The BPO Skills Development Council has developed the
GBFS programme, a foundation skills development
offering to empower students with the awareness and
skills necessary for entry-level employment in the BPM
sector. The GBFS Curriculum in OBF has been developed
and published. The GBFS Courseware, consisting of the
GBFS Trainer Guide and Student Handbooks have been
developed and published. GBFS has been conducted
across various states in the country.
I Love My CityLets Make it Green Campaign
NASSCOM, in association with Amdocs, NASSCOM
Foundation, MCCIA, Greenscape and SEAP, launched
its, I Love my CityLets Make it Green campaign in
Pune, to encourage Green practices among
businesses, their workforce and the civic administration.
e-Waste collection drive
As part of the I Love my CityLets make it Green
campaign, NASSCOM has been working to create
awareness among employees about Green initiatives. It
has also been promoting proper recycling of e-Waste
through its e-Waste collection drive. Greenscape, one
of Indias leading e-Waste recyclers, provided the
logistics support for the initiative.

Session on Making Pune a greener place
A half-day conference was hosted by NASSCOM on
April 12, 2012 to present thought leadership on how to
make Pune a greener place to live and work in. There
were two panel discussions Act GreenNeed of the
hour and Driving Green Initiatives in Organisations and
Soci ety. Speakers from the Pune Muni ci pal
Corporation, TERI, IT and non-IT companies in Pune and
the NASSCOM Foundation shared their views at the
event.
Energy Sustainability Framework for e-Governance
projects
NASSCOM has been working on developing the Energy
Sustainability Framework for e-Governance Projects. e-
Governance projects are making a substantial impact
on reducing the carbon footprint of government and
the communities, through significant reduction in the
use of paper and minimising of a citizens trips to
government offices for various services and payments.
This framework will enable e-Governance Project
Leaders to compute their contribution to Environment
Sustainability.

Engagement with member companies and the
Government
NASSCOM continued to engage with member
companies and the government in identifying
emerging opportunities for ICT Tools, Applications and
Services for Environment Sustainability.
NASSCOM becomes a member of the India Smart Grid
Forum
NASSCOM became a member of the India Smart Grid
Forum, a PPP initiative of the Ministry of Power,
Government of India for accelerated development of
smart grid technologies in the Indian power sector. In
one of the workshops the Vision of Smart Grid for India
was defined by NASSCOM members and submitted to
the Government for consideration.
The National Skills Registry (NSR), an important initiative
spearheaded by NASSCOM, is aimed at enhancing the
security of processes, operations and systems from the
perspective of employees, and improves background
check practices. The NSR has been widely accepted by
the industry and employees alike. It has 12.7 lakh web
registrations and 8.3 lakh biometrics registrations. 122
companies, accounting for around 70 percent of the IT-
BPO workforce, have subscribed to the NSR.
NATIONAL SKILLS REGISTRY (NSR)
NSR Workshops held across cities
Workshops were held for organisations across cities
acquainting them about the benefits of registering their
employees with the NSR. The workshops also
demonstrated the process of registration.
Task Force on National Cyber Security
The government has constituted a task force to carry
out a holistic review of national security and the
countrys preparedness to face its myriad challenges. A
joint Working Group was constituted by the government
with DSCI as an industry coordinator. DSCI had detailed
discussions with all the stakeholders and reports of the
Working Groups on Capacity building, Testing and
Certification, Standards and Audit, Institutions and
Structures and Roadmap, International cooperation
and advocacy were submitted to the National Security
Advisor.
Planning Commissions Privacy Group
In order to better understand privacy concerns and
identify interventions for effectively addressing issues,
the Planning Commission has set up the Privacy Group
under the chairmanship of Justice A.P. Shah, former
Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court, of which DSCI is a
member. The Planning Commission committee
released a report which covers international privacy
principles, national privacy principles, rationale and
emerging issues along with the analysis of relevant
legislations/bills from a privacy perspective.
IndoEU Negotiations for adequacy status
As part of the IndoEU negotiations for declaring India
as an adequate country for data protection, a high
level EU delegation led by DG Justice visited India to
consult with key stakeholders and take a firsthand view
of the data protection practices implemented by the IT-
BPM industry. DSCI led the discussion with the EU
delegation, enlisting the support from key players in the
IT-BPM industry and presenting the salient features of the
IT (Amendment) Act, 2008 and how it met the EU
adequacy requirements. DSCI also presented a White
Paper on EU adequacy assessment of India, which
assesses the adequacy of India's data privacy regime in
the light of the 'third country' evaluation mandated
under Article 25 of the EU Data Protection Directive.

Cyber Security Advisory Group
NASSCOM and DSCI established the Cyber Security
Advisory Group (CSAG), under the Chairmanship of
Rajendra Pawar, then Chairman of NASSCOM and
Chairman and Co-founder, NIIT Group to bring public
and private sector together to deliberate on
cyberspace issues, understand the steps taken by other
countries, and identify priority areas for action. The
group comprises leaders from the public and private
s ect or s and l aw enf or cement . T he k ey
recommendations have been developed after taking
into account ongoing global cyber security initiative
and developments in the Indian environment.
Cyber Security Task Force IDSA
DSCI was a member of the task force created by the
Institute for Defense Studies and Analysis (IDSA) on
cyber security. The task force created a report on
Indias Cyber Security Challenge. The report discussed
the role of the government and private sector in
recognising the different aspects of cyber security and
prioritised security and risk management plans.
Working Group 27 of ISO/IEC JTC1 SC7
DSCI formally joined the Working Group 27 under the
ISO/IEC JTC1 SC7, which is developing the proposed ISO
Standard 30105a global standard with an integrated
approach to lifecycle processes for the ITeS/BPM sector.
DSCI is contributing in developing the security related
aspects of this standard. It has drafted Process
Reference Models (PRM) for following processes
Information Security Management, Compliance
Management, Risk Management and Business
Continuity Planning.
e-Security Index project awarded by Department of
Electronics and Information Technology
The Department of Electronics and Information
Technology has awarded the project to DSCI to
develop an e-Security Index Framework for India. The e-
Security index is based on three sub-indexes National,
Sectoral and Citizen. The index will help measure the
security preparedness of the country and help
understand the security maturity of different entities,
i denti fy i mprovement areas and accordi ngl y
channelise investments and efforts to improve cyber
security in these respective segments.
NASSCOMDSCI Report on Securing our Cyber
Frontiers
The report was released by the Union Home Minister, P.
Chidambaram and highlighted cyber security issues at
the national and global levels; the need for
cooperation, and information age responses to the
cyber challenge. It identified priority areas for action,
including ten key recommendations in which the roles
of government and the industry have been outlined.
DSCI Best Practices Meet
DSCI organised the 4th Best Practices Meet on July 12,
2012 in Bengaluru, focused on business adoption and
the convergence of Mobile and Cloud in a global
context. It was inaugurated by Dr. Gulshan Rai, Director
General, CERT-In. The Meet 'called for action' the
industry and users, to help create a seamless and secure
channel for business operations.
NASSCOMDSCI Information Security Summit
NASSCOM, in association with the DSCI, organised the
7th annual Information Security Summit in Mumbai from
December 11-12, 2012. The two-day summit provided a
platform for addressing the current security challenges,
trends in security, and broader subjects including
national security, cyber crimes and cyber security.
Supported by over 35 organisations, the summit
featured various sessions and roundtables that
spotlighted contemporary and evolving approaches to
the security challenges faced by different industry
verticals. The summit drew over 400 participants.
DSCI Excellence Awards
The DSCI Excellence Awards initiative was rolled out on
the sidelines of the Information Security Summit. Through
the Excellence Awards, DSCI honours organisations and
individuals who have implemented robust, effective
and resilient security programmes, It also recognises law
enforcement agencies for exemplary efforts in
capacity building and cyber crime investigations. The
awards were given away to the winners by Latha
Reddy, Deputy National Security Advisor.
DSCI Assessment Framework released
The DSCI Assessment Framework for Security and
Privacy was released at the NASSCOMDSCI Annual
I nf or mat i on S ecur i t y S ummi t 2012 by N.
Chandrasekaran, Chairman, NASSCOM and CEO, TCS.
DSCI developed the Framework with the support and
guidance of experts from the industry, consulting firms
and user organisations who provided the benefit of their
experience and expectations. Inputs and feedback
from the members of the Privacy Assessment Advisory
Group (PAAG) and Security Assessment Advisory Group
(SAAG) helped DSCI finalise the approach to develop
the Assessment Framework.

DSCI Cyber Forensics Forum
DSCI Cyber Forensic Forum has been established to
assist the law enforcement agencies in the investigation
of cyber crime cases related to digital evidence
handling. The forum's key objectives include working
towards capacity building, investigation and guidance,
technical know-how and policy recommendations on
best practices related to cyber forensics.
DSCI Chapters
DSCI Chapters are spread across the country in 11 cities.
The Bhubaneswar Chapter was inaugurated in 2012.
Training Programmes
DSCI is actively engaged in imparting training to Law
Enforcement and other government agencies through
various training programmes developed especially for
the purpose.
NASSCOM Social Innovation Honours (NSIH) 2012
The NASSCOM Social Innovation Honours (NSIH)
initiative celebrates innovations that demonstrate
exceptional use of Information and Communication
Technology (ICT) for social development. Since 2008,
the Honours have attracted more than 1,000 innovative
projects from NGOs, corporates, social enterprises,
government bodies, PSUs, students and individuals. The
NASSCOM Foundation recognises and showcases such
innovations that aim to impact society in a positive
manner. The winners of the NSIH 2012 were declared
and awards given away during the inaugural session at
the NASSCOM India Leadership Forum on February 14,
2012 in Mumbai.
The NASSCOM Knowledge Network (NKN)
The NASSCOM Knowledge Network (NKN) is a network
of telecentres that provides access to knowledge and
information in education, livelihood, health, and
employment and entrepreneurship to underserved
communities in rural and urban areas. NKN now
stretches across 15 states of India, with more than 250
NKN centres, that work with over 400,000 people
annually.
NKN signed an agreement with the Government of
Indias Common Services Centers (CSCs)Special
Purpose Vehicle (SPV) to conduct workshops on
strategic telecenter management. The first workshop
on Financial Inclusion was held on December 6, 2012.
NASSCOM FOUNDATION (NF)
ConnectIT
There is a huge gap in the total number of NGOs and
local government officers in India and those who
access and use ICTs. NASSCOM Foundation has
initiated the ConnectIT programme to sensitise and
conduct capacity building workshops to build the ICT
skills of NGOs and government officers across India.
ConnectIT workshops were conducted for NGOs in
Guwahati, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Pune, Patna and
Ranchi and government officers across Gujarat and
Karnataka.
BiG Tech
BiG Tech launched in August 2007, is a key technology
philanthropy programme of the NASSCOM Foundation.
Under this programme, NGOs receive software and
hardware at very subsidised rates. The programme
helps NGOs to cut their ICT budget as well as
functionally scale up their operations and ICT projects
by providing them access to software donated by
NASSCOMs donor partners. It makes technology
assistance accessible to any NGO in India at just the
click of a button. The programme is undergoing
significant upgrades, including the development of a
Hindi-language site. It has over 300 registered NGOs
BiG Bridge
BiG Bridge launched in April 2009, is a computer
refurbishing and recycling programme that aims to
provide non-profits access to refurbished computers
with licensed software and value added content. It
gives a longer life to computers, reducing e-waste and
providing viable alternatives to capital starved non-
profits. The goal of the programme is also to enable
education, employability and entrepreneurship
through computer donations. An e-waste collection
drive was conducted with member organisations to
celebrate World Environment Day. Donations have
been made in schools and NGOs across the country.
MyKartavya
MyKartavya is a corporate volunteer management
portal that helps companies approach volunteering
from a strategic perspective, hence optimising their
corporate social responsibility activities and enhancing
employee engagement. The programme aims at
promoting strategic volunteering for capacity building
of individuals, communities and member companies.
The portal connects employees to volunteering
opportunities posted by NGOs (and screened by NF).
The Foundation celebrated the Joy of Giving Week
between October 28, 2012 in Bengaluru and Pune.

Skills for Employment
This programme aims to provide employability and
encourage micro-entrepreneurship to Indias rural
youth and people from under-served communities
including women, people with disabilities as well as
unskilled workers.
Impact Sourcing
The NASSCOM Foundation is working at increasing long-
term employment in the BPO sector for those with
limited opportunitiesbasically, what is being termed
as Impact Sourcing (IS). The NASSCOM Foundation
and NASSCOM are working to study and grow the
ecosystem, and ensuring that growth is profit-driven (IS
can reduce costs by around 40 percent compared to
typical urban BPOs and bring down attrition from 40-60
percent to 8-12 per cent). They are additionally
promoting the secondary positive social impacts of
livelihood creation. The Impact Sourcing opportunities
identified so far are:
BPOs (typi cal l y 50-500 seaters) l ocated i n
underserved locations where the purpose is to utilise
local talent for running processes. These organisations
are often called Rural BPOs, though a more
accurate term is Impact Sourcing Service Providers
(ISSPs), that operate in non-urban areas and
underserved urban areas
Mainstream BPO organisations subcontracting work
to ISSPs in alternate locations for cost-effectiveness
Mainstream BPOs setting up their own ISSPs in
locations with limited opportunities for employment
BPO organisations directly hiring the underserved (the
excluded, the disabled, the less educated, and
vocationally trained youth) who are capable of high
performance

The IT Niketan initiative was created in 2011 for IT
professionals and students (both engineering and non-
engineering, aspiring to join the IT industry) to fulfill the
objective of learning by knowledge sharing. In the
second edition of IT Niketan, the TECH-Unique1.0 event

KOLKATA
was organised on May 5, 2012 in Kolkata for IT
professionals as well as the students. The idea was to
bring them together and enable them to learn by
knowl edge shari ng. The event wi tnessed an
overwhelming participation, drawing ore than 550
delegates (of which 40 percent were students and 60
percent professionals).
Closed Door Roundtable with representatives of BPM
organisations
A closed door roundtable was held with representatives
of BPO companies in Kolkata on August 31, 2012. The
discussion revolved around the current challenges of
the BPM industry and specific action items to address
the same. The session titled, Where do you go from
hereCurrent Challenges and Road Ahead drew
participation from member as well as non-member
organi sati ons. The roundtabl e hel ped spread
awareness about the activities being rolled out by
NASSCOMs BPM forum across the country.
Session on The twin challenges of security and
privacybalancing the requirements
The session was organised in association with the DSCI
and Internet Society Kolkata on October 9, 2012. The
session was organised to throw light on the challenges
being faced by organisations/governments today, in
term of maintaining a balance between security and
privacy. It was attended by representatives from the
West Bengal Government, Kolkata Police, Academia
and IT-BPM industry. The session drew participation from
105 delegates representing 30 companies.
Dewang Mehta Memorial Lecture 2012
The Dewang Mehta Foundation Trust organised a
special function to commemorate the 50th birth
anniversary of the late Dewang Mehta, NASSCOMs first
President and a pioneer of the Indian IT-BPM industry.
Held in Ahmedabad, the ceremony included the
presentation of the Dewang Mehta IT Awards 2012 as
well as the delivery of the Dewang Mehta Memorial
Lecture by Som Mittal, President, NASSCOM. This year,
the Dewang Mehta Foundation received over 58
projects from engineering students across Gujarat
colleges in their final year of study. Three projects were
selected by an eminent jury for the Dewang Mehta IT
Awards 2012, based on their originality, innovativeness,
focus on sustainability, social impact, scalability and
presentation.

HR Forum Session
NASSCOM in association with the Gujarat Electronics
and Software Industries Association (GESIA) hosted the
interactive session in Ahmedabad on October, 2012 on
TalentScape--a new model being developed to gain
insight into the talent practices of the knowledge
industry. The key takeaways of this session were:
How do we know if the companies are being insightful
enough to align their talent practices to their business
model imperatives?
How do we equip ourselves to have candid
conversations with incoming talent and ensure a
robust alignment between talent and our business
model imperatives?
How do we establish meaningful talent acquisition,
development and retention strategy that is absolutely
in tune with geographic, functional, and business
realities?
The event drew 50 HR professionals.
NASSCOM and Deloitte seminar unveils Technology
Trends 2012
NASSCOM and Deloitte brought the Technology Trends
2012 report that examines the ever-evolving
landscape of technology put to business use. The report
was unveiled in Mumbai on April 25, 2012. The trend
report had 10 topics that have the opportunity to
impact businesses. The year's theme, Elevate IT for
digital business, examined the broad impacts of five
technology forces that have influenced our reports over
the past several yearsanalytics, mobility, social, Cloud
and cyber security. There was also a panel discussion
with prominent CXOs from the industry as well as select
vendor representatives who shared their views on the
relevance of such trends in an Indian context. The
seminar was attended by 80 participants.
Conference on Cyber crime
NASSCOM and DSCI in association with DIT, the
Government of Maharashtra had organised a one-day
conference on Cyber crime: A financial sector view in
Mumbai on May 3, 2012. The event was inaugurated by
Prithviraj Chavan, Chief Minister of Maharashtra. A
group of highly qualified professionals from the financial
sector and the legal fraternity were invited who brought
in extensive knowledge and case study learnings in the
field of cyber crimes. The conference was attended by
industry representatives, police officers and lawyers.
MUMBAI
Global Accessibility Awareness Day
NASSCOM hosted the Global Accessibility Awareness
Day in association with the Directorate of Information
Technology, Government of Maharashtra and
NASSCOM Foundation. The knowledge partner was
BarrierBreak Technologies. The event was inaugurated
by Shivajirao Moghe, Minister for Social Justice,
Government of Maharashtra. Celebrated on May 9, the
worldwide initiative focused on bringing together key
departments of the government, and for-profit and not-
for-profit organisations to create awareness on
accessibility to empower persons with disabilities.
The knowledge of accessibility is very limited in India and
hence this initiative helped to create awareness about
the needs of persons with disabilities, identify what
needs to be done and also spotlight some things that
have been done already in the state of Maharashtra.
The day was divided into two sessions panel discussions
in the morning and a training session for developers on
web accessibility in the second half.
ReTechCon 2012
The eighth edition of the annual ReTechCon (Retail
Technology Conclave) was held by RAI (Retail
Association of India) in partnership with NASSCOM from
May 1718, 2012. The theme of the conclave,
TechnologyEnabling Retail, Delivering Value
demonstrated how IT can help retailers to leverage
business efficiency using technology and deliver value
to customers. The event was attended by over 600
delegates.
Promoting Nagpur as the next BPM destination
NASSCOM hosted a special event to promote the city of
Nagpur as the next BPM hub. The event called
Promoting Tier 2/3 destinations: Nagpur Calling, was
held on February 24, 2012. Hosted by NASSCOM in
associ at i on wi t h VED ( Vi dar bha Economi c
Development) Council, VASE (Vidarbha Association of
Software Exports) and MADC (Maharashtra Airport
Development Company), the initiative was targeted at
building awareness within the state government and IT
industry about the growing importance of Nagpur as a
BPM investment location.
Nagpur Calling also presented Nagpur BPM success
stories and the plethora of opportunities that the city
offered to interested IT organisations. The conference
drew over 300 participants from the IT-BPM sector as well
as academia.

THE NATIONAL CAPITAL REGION (NCR)
Workshop on Tax Challenges in the changing
economic environment
A special workshop on Transfer Pricing was jointly hosted
by NASSCOM and KPMG on January 11, 2012 in Pune.
The workshop was focused around understanding the
tax challenges being faced by the IT-BPM industry,
against the backdrop of changing regulations and an
uncertain global economic climate. The environment,
the speakers at the workshop pointed out, was making
tax a key business risk for the IT-BPM organisations in
India. The workshop also focused on issues such as
industry practices, current market trends across various
sectors, transfer pricing concerns for the boardroom,
managing tax effectively and stock options for
employees. Five speakers addressed 45 attendees,
representing 19 NASSCOM member organisations.
Session on Building and Scaling a Product Business
The session held in Pune on July 18, 2012 focused on the
unique aspects of building, scaling and running a
product business. It touched upon the key make or
break elements of a product business, such as
identifying and validating the opportunity, defining the
value and offering, building it for many (not for one),
make versus buy decisions, organisational design and
product line optimisation for profit. Real-life experiences
and case studies of online, mobile and desktop
software products were also shared in the session.
Session on BPO Platforms
The session, held in Delhi on April 4, 2012, was attended
by about 30 delegates. The session deliberated on the
following:
What does it take for BPO companies to begin this
new transformation journey?
Does this make sense to every other BPO company?
Will this result in efficient SLA metrics management
and better cost savings for customers?
Session on Salary Trends
This session was held in Delhi on April 12, 2012 under the
aegis of the SIG on HR for NCR region. Apart from salary
trends the session also discussed the evolution of total
rewards i n the current context, Trends on
compensation mix and defining the right mix, drivers of
rewards for different demographics, using benefits as
differentiators etc. were also highlighted. The session
was attended by about 45 HR heads/HR professionals.
Session on Is the IT-BPO industry headed toward a
disruption?
The session was held in Gurgaon on June 21, 2012. The
focus was on four disruptive trends that were likely to
impact the IT-BPM industry significantly: Big Data, Cloud,
Social Media, and Mobile Devices. The session explored
the future of the offshoring industry through a series of
interactive panel discussions between CXOs of leading
companies and select thought leaders. The session was
attended by 70 people.
Tech Series session on Cloud ComputingImplications
on Privacy and Security
A one day seminar was held in Noida on July 5, 2012,
which introduced attendees to the importance of
cloud computing. This was followed by an overview of
the NASSCOMDeloitte Cloud Computing Report.
DSCI representatives spoke about Cloud Security:
Legal and Policy Issues. The seminar also had a panel
discussion on the Implications on Security and
Privacya developers Perspective. It was attended by
92 delegates.
Session on People productivity, new paradigm, how to
scale up
Recognising that Chandigarh is a vibrant, high-
potential IT-BPM hub, NASSCOM has been engaging
with the industry to discuss key HR issues. On March 13,
2012, NASSCOM hosted a special session on People
productivity, new paradigm, how to scale up, in the
city. The interactive session was centred around the
issue of change management with respect to scaling-
up. It was attended by 25 participants from member
companies in Chandigarh.
Debate on Customer knows best
A fun-filled debate was organised by NASSCOM in
partnership with Open Coffee Club (OCC) Bengaluru
and Silicon Valley entrepreneur and strategy
consultant, Sramana Mitras organisation, One Million
by One Million (1M/1M). The aim was to provide insights
to start-ups and emerging organisations in the IT-BPM
sector, on how they could reach the USD 1 million mark.
The event was attended by over 200 start-ups and
entrepreneurs.

Inaugural session of Tech-Savvy Series
As part of its effort to engage with SMEs, NASSCOM
unveiled a special initiative called the Tech-Savvy
series. The Tech-Savvy Series aims to create awareness
and understanding of emerging technologies, facilitate
knowledge sharing among NASSCOM member
companies, create a community of technocrats and
highlight local products. The first session of the series was
held in Bengaluru on June 28, 2012 and focused on Big
Data transforming Business.
Session on SEZ Policies: Implications on the IT-BPM
industry
The session was held in Bengaluru on August 7, 2012.
Policy makers continue to attempt remedial measures
to achieve intended objectives. In this backdrop, it was
worthwhile to understand the SEZ regulations and
income-tax provisions and the disparity leading to
denial of intended fiscal benefits. The session threw light
on the differing interpretations and the need for aligning
legislations to achieve the intended objectives.
NASSCOM supports relief work for Cyclone Thane
NASSCOMs Chennai Region initiated relief work for
Cyclone Thane on January 24, 2012. It was carried out
with support from corporates. The organisations helped
collect relief material within the stipulated time frame,
arranged the logistics, and ensured that the affected
areas received the donations.
MTC Chennai launched 30 new buses to cater to the
needs of IT-BPM organisations on the IT express Highway
NASSCOM, along with the Government of Tamil Nadus
Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) Chennai,
had introduced 30 buses (a mix of AC and regular
vehicles), on the routes/times suggested by the Indian
IT-BPM industry in the city. The buses make around 150
trips covering the entire stretch of 24 kms, and benefit
over 200,000 employees working for more than 100
corporates on the IT express Highway. The service
encourages publ i c transport usage, thereby
decongesting the existing routes. NASSCOM will work
with the transport department to keep track of the
usage of the buses and arrange for more frequent
services. Sunil Kumar, Centre Head of the World Bank,
inaugurated the bus service. The event was attended
by officers from the Tamil Nadu Government and
industry representatives The admin teams of various
large and small member organisations of NASSCOM
also actively participated in this initiative.
CHENNAI
Senior IT professionals engage under the aegis of
NASSCOM
NASSCOM provided a plank for senior IT professionals,
including CEOs, CXOs, CFOs and HR heads to meet up
with peers in Chennai, under the umbrella of its different
Forums. The aim was to enable these business,
technology, financial and HR leaders to exchange
ideas, discuss important trends and developments in
these segments, and determine their impact on
organisations. NASSCOM member companies based
out of Chennai congregated under NASSCOMs CEO,
HR and CFO Forums, focusing attention on issues such as
Indias regulatory climate, managing talent, and the
overall state of the IT-BPM industry.

Republic Ride 2012
A Hyderabad based trust, The Atlanta Foundation, with
the support from NASSCOM and the NASSCOM
Foundation, organised The Republic Ride 2012 on
January 26, 2012 in Hyderabad. A socially-driven
cycling event, the goal of The Republic Ride 2012 was to
raise awareness and funds for the education of under-
privileged students. The Ride was flagged off by
Ponnal a Lakshmai ah, Mi ni ster of I nformati on
Technology, Government of Andhra Pradesh. More
than 3,000 cyclists from over 50 MNCs participated in
The Republic Ride thus making it the biggest corporate
cycling event in the country.
VQuestBuilding High Growth Ventures
The Indian Angel Network, NASSCOM and ISB have
formed, a unique partnership of investors, industry and
academia and have come together to bring Venture
Quest. VQuest is an initiative to enable start-ups and
early stage entrepreneurs to think beyond the idea and
help build high impact ventures. Entrepreneurs in early
stage businesses require more than just money to
succeed. They require close mentoring and inputs on
strategy as well as execution. Nurturing start-ups is what
VQuest strives for. The first workshop in the VQuest series

Seminar on LondonThe technology capital of the
world
The seminar was jointly organised by London & Partners,
NASSCOM and UKTI (UK Trade & Investment) on
September 7, 2012 in Hyderabad. The objective was to
provide an opportunity to participants to hear from Jeff
Cao, HeadAPAC, London & Partners about how Indian
companies can look at London as a strategic location
to expand their businesses into Europe. Over the last few
years London has emerged as one of the most
attractive locations for Indian businesses especially in
technology and knowledge based sectors. Jeff also
talked about the practicalities of setting up a business in
the UK and how London & Partners helps and assists
international companies in successfully starting their
overseas business in a cost effective way. There were
more than 50 participants for the seminar.
Session on Unconventional Talent ManagementThe
New Normal for 2012
The session was held in association with AMCHAM in
Hyderabad on August 8, 2012. It aimed to analyse the
current Talent Management Strategies and discuss new
ideas for creating and developing entry-level talent
which has a direct impact on a companys bottom line.
The discussions in the session centered around new
recruitment strategies to create an alternative supply of
talent, how to develop a multi-skilled and flexible
workforce that can adapt to variances in industry
demand, innovative solutions for mentoring talent and
upgrading their skills and how industry centric training
can help in creating a talent pool from Tier-2/3 colleges.
It was attended by 150 participants including HR heads
and HR teams from IT-BPM companies in Hyderabad.

HR forum workshop
In this session of the HR forum a workshop on The talent
to manage talentNew millennium trends was held on
March 29, 2012. This was followed by a panel discussion
on Changing role of HR. The workshop was attended
by close to 55 delegates who actively participated from
member and non-member companies. The workshop
received excellent feedback.
MYSORE
Shared transport model implemented in Mysores
Global Village Tech Park
It is a fact that public transport is available in all Indian
cities today, and works fine for the general public. At the
same time, it is also an acknowledged fact that a little
fine tweaking to that system, in collaboration with the
municipal authorities of a city, can work wonders for
business districts. Recognising this reality, Mysore Roads
Global Village Technology Park, decided to launch a
shared transport initiative in collaboration with CBS, as
well as IT-BPM organisations. CBS is a system that allows
corporates to take their minds off transport, and focus
on their core business. It not only provides easy,
dependable, sustainable and safe transport, it is also a
very cost-effective system. Heads of organisations and
NASSCOM initiated the idea of a shared transport
model for the Global Village Technology Park which
now covers 40 routes.
