Allies in North America
There were several important alliances in the
mid-1700s:
The British and the American colonists
The British and certain American Indian groups
Iroquois Confederacy
The French and certain American Indian groups
Huron, Algonquin
These alliances contributed greatly to the causes
of the French and Indian War.

A Plan to Create a Union
The Albany Plan of Union
The Plan of Union passed by the Albany Congress:
A grand council and a president general would rule the colonies.
This government would have the power to:
Solve colonial land disputes
Handle relations with American Indians
Organize colonial defenses
Impose taxes (to pay for all of these things)
Plan had to be approved by the colonial assemblies

Rejection of the Albany Plan of Union
The plan faced both Colonial and British resistance:
Colonial Resistance:
Feared losing power and independence
Worried about the loss of territory and trade to other colonies
British Resistance:
Uneasy about the idea of colonial unity
Believed that colonial needs were already being met.

Though it never went into effect, why is the Albany Plan of Union important?

Tension Between Britain and the
Colonies
British Secretary of State William Pitt the Elder took control of the
British war effort in 1757.
His decisions helped the British but angered colonists:
Forced colonists to serve in the army
Forced colonists to quarter troops and provide supplies

Benefits for the Colonists
American Indians Face Challenges
Regardless of which side they supported, American Indians
lost land and power.
Colonists began to move west.
Tribes were weakened by wartime alliances.
Pontiac led an unsuccessful rebellion against the British.
The Proclamation of 1763
After Pontiacs Rebellion, the
British issued the Proclamation
of 1763
Reserved land west of the
Appalachian Mountains for
American Indians.
Allowed the British to control the
colonies more easily.
Was ignored by colonists.
The Cost of the War
The war was incredibly expensive, and the British had huge debts
as a result.
The British wanted the colonists to pay for the wars expenses.
The believed the colonists were the greatest beneficiaries of the war,
with the French out of North America.
Created new taxes
This increased resentment of the British
Tensions rise, leading to protests and conflict that would ultimately help
lead to the revolution.
