OCCUPATIONS TO CONSIDER

ACCOUNTING
In general, involves the collection, organization, reporting, and analysis of financial information. Can be divided
into two main areas: Public Accounting and Corporate/Management Accounting. Many public accounting firms also
provide tax preparation/planning services.

Auditor: Reviews and verifies a clients financial statements. Often a Certified Public Accountant (CPA).

Staff Accountant: Maintains an organizations financial records, prepares and analyzes financial statements,
provides management with decision support, and assists management with performance evaluation.

COMMERCIAL BANKING + INVESTMENT MANAGEMENT
Primary focus is in lending activities; some degree of involvement in investment banking, discount brokerage,
financial planning services. Traditionally, business oriented toward two areas: Retail or Consumer Banking and
Wholesale or Commercial Banking. Positions are available in relationship management, operations, HR and more.

Consumer Loan Officer: Administers small loans, primarily to individuals and small businesses.

Credit Analyst: Evaluates financial data to determine feasibility of extending credit or issuing loans.

Private Banker/Wealth Manger: Provide investment advice and services for high net worth clients.

CORPORATE FINANCE
Broadly speaking, involves any financial concern of an organization, from securing additional funding to capital
budgeting to mergers and acquisitions.

Financial Analyst: Depending on the company or department, analyzes cash flows, evaluates projects, reviews
divisional and corporate budgets.
INSURANCE
Involves risk and financial management, and providing economic protection for both individuals and corporations
against various types of losses, tragedies, and liabilities.
Underwriter: Evaluates risks, determines whether or not to issue an insurance policy and at what price.

Actuary: Deals with the financial impact of risk and uncertainties.

INVESTMENT BANKING/SALES & TRADING
Provides financial advisory and underwriting services to companies, institutions, and governments. Three major
areas of activities include: investment banking, sales and trading, and research.

Analyst: Depending on the specific area of activity, such as mergers and acquisitions, can involve determining
valuations for offerings, analyzing financial needs, conducting due diligence.

Research Analyst: Conducts quantitative and economic research in support of investment banking, sales and
trading activities.

Sales Professional: Communicate with clients about their investment options, monitoring performance and
suggesting new options.

Trader: Takes a position in a specific market through the purchase and sale of a particular type of security.
Proprietary traders buy and sell using banks own capital, as opposed to funds from customers.
