Success stories
Freeport, Texas
Chemical plant
During the decommissioning of a styrene
plant, nitrogen was being used to push
the styrene from a half-mile pipeline. An
M-I SWACO pigging separator isolated
the nitrogen from the styrene which had
to remain oxygen-free. At the receiving
end, the product went into storage, and
the nitrogen was sent to the dual-igniter
flare stack. The customer could still sell
the product because it was in excellent
condition, and this sale offset the cost
of cleaning the lines.
New England
LNG off-loading facility
An LNG off-loading facility, off the US
Atlantic coast, had pre-commissioned
a pipeline for unloading tankers. During
the drying of the line, however, water
had been accidentally left behind.
During the first off-loading of a ship,
the water formed an ice plug and
halted the process. After assessing
the situation, M-I SWACO deployed
two pigging separators with separate
vent stacks to be loaded on barges
and set up on each end of the lines
to trap the ice plug in the middle.
The pressure on the line was then
bled off simultaneously to prevent any
movement of the plug. Methanol was
then pumped to dissolve the plug and
the line was safely put back into service.
South Texas
LNG pipeline
On a site where M-I SWACO had been
called to swab a pipeline, there was
still a significant amount of LNG in the
line. In order to control the vapor that
could result, we created a two-stage
separation process. The LNG first fed
into a high-pressure separator which
acted as a shock absorber for the
vapor. Then a low-pressure separator
isolated the gas from the liquids. The
liquid was then removed at low pressure
and the gas was sent to our portable
flare stack. An additional seven frac
tanks were filled before the line was
cleared of all fluid. The customer then
sold the product to help offset the cost
of the cleaning.
Trailer-mounted separators include a 50-in. OD with 500 mmcf/d capacity and 10-in. inlets and outlets
