Course Description: Senior design project (Sproj) in the Department of Electrical Engineering (EE), School of Science and Engineering (SSE), LUMS is a two-semester, six (06) credits course. This project undertaken in this course should cover suitable depth to provide an integrated assessment of the progress of the students toward a desired electrical engineering competency. This course also allows the students to focus on economic factors, safety, reliability, environment and social impact of the work being carried out in their project. Electrical Engineering students will form teams of two to four students each (usually of three members, maximum four), select a design project and work under supervision of an Electrical Engineering faculty member. The first semester, of the two-semester sequence, would normally start in the fall semester of an academic year.
Course Status: Core course for Electrical Engineering majors
Pre-requisites: Senior Level Standing
Goals: Senior Design Project should help students in areas of engineering design and project management to solve real-life engineering and technical problems. Demonstrate the ability to select and undertake an engineering problem requiring a significant component of design, analysis and synthesis and to carry it out in a professional manner with minimum supervision. Develop knowledge, skills and attitudes to enable integration and enhancement upon electrical engineering courses and also upon previous courses in engineering, mathematics, basic sciences, humanities, social sciences, and communication skills. Demonstrate the ability to effectively use test and measurement instruments to carry out project development, collation of results and troubleshooting as required. Identify project requirements, conduct financial feasibility study (if required), develop engineering design specifications, recognize and articulate design constraints, generate alternative concepts, refine preliminary designs including configuration & parametric designs, complete simulation, construction and verification activities. Document and present the project through various stages of progression by developing schedules and maintaining positive design environment through effective concurrent engineering / teamwork skills. Demonstrate the ability to report the progress and results of the project both orally and in writing to a professional standard. Demonstrate an understanding of the safety hazards by adhering to appropriate safety standards and procedures, and engaging in design and testing procedures that minimizes safety risks. In summary, following areas should be covered in the work undertaken in this course:
Use of Knowledge Base Individual Work Ethics and Equity Problem Analysis Team Work Life-Long Learning Investigation Communication Economics and Project Management Design Professionalism Use of Engineering Tools Impact on Society
Text book: As directed by the Senior Project Supervisor(s)
Supplementary Reading: As directed by the Senior Project Supervisor(s)
Lectures and Formal Contact: There will be no formal lectures. Sproj will be scheduled as 2 - 4 sections of lab sessions by the Sproj TA(s) after discussion with the students. The duration of time slot for each section will be ~ 3 hours per week and each Sproj group has to choose and then attend one time slot throughout the semester. Two-third attendance in these scheduled sessions will be mandatory for all students.
Senior Project Evaluation Committee: Department will form a Senior Project Evaluation Committee to ensure consistent evaluation of projects. Member(s) of faculty, not associated with the project, and the project supervisor(s) will comprise the Project Evaluation Committee for each project. This committee will evaluate the project progress every semester as outlined in the grading scheme.
TA(s) for the course will ensure project groups adherence to the schedule and project progress.
Important Guidelines: The Sproj will be evaluated on per semester basis. However, the grades will be forwarded to the RO after Sproj-II (for complete 6 credits). Students will submit a project proposal after consulting their Sproj advisor(s) within first two weeks of the fall semester of their senior year. Feedback will be acquired on project proposal from the appointed Evaluators and students are supposed to accommodate those suggestions (if any) in discussion with their advisors. In order to ensure a steady progress, Sproj will be scheduled by the Sproj TA(s) (in consultation with the students) as multiple lab sections. The duration of time slot for each lab section will be 3 hours per week. Each Sproj group needs to choose and attend one time slot throughout the semester and two-third attendance in these scheduled sessions will be mandatory for all students. In first semester, final evaluation will be based upon Design & Simulation Report and Presentation which will be held two weeks prior to the dead week. A prototype of the designed system will be required from all groups within first two weeks of the second semester. In the second semester, a preliminary project demo of complete Sproj work will be held right after the spring break and final Sproj presentation, demo and viva will take place three weeks prior to the dead week (exact dates will be communicated later). Students will also be provided feedback on how they should improve their work/demo for open house Project Exhibition. Open house Project Exhibition will be held before the last day of classes. Participation of students in this exhibition shall be compulsory until and unless a formal exemption is granted by the Sproj committee in view of some compelling reasons. Student will submit the softcopy of their Sproj reports and posters before the final presentation week. All Sproj groups need to submit 2 hard copies of their project report to the department after getting approval on the submitted draft from their advisor(s) before the open house Project Exhibition. These reports should adhere to the EE Department provided template for uniformity. All students should also have a hard copy of their respective Sproj report. Students must observe a formal dress code in both presentations and in the open house Project Exhibition. The overall objective is for the students to demonstrate their ability to conduct literature survey, develop suitable model(s), perform relevant calculations, propose a design solution to the problem, conduct simulations wherever applicable and implement their design. Students are encouraged to solicit and undertake industry sponsored projects. These projects will be reviewed by the EE department to assess and tailor them to meet departmental requirements Interdisciplinary projects are encouraged. EE students must have at-least one member of EE faculty co-supervising the project to ensure the project meets the requirements set forth by the EE department. Any exceptions to the above will be discussed and decided by the EE undergraduate curriculum committee on an individual case basis.
