Commitment to Organic Seed Innovation

As a global leader in organic seed breeding, Vitalis is committed to the growth and development of the organic
seed sector at a global level. To that end we have significantly expanded our research, distribution and varietal
assortment over our nearly 20 year history, just as we have studied the unique challenges of sector growth, both
globally and at a country-by-country level. In 2013, our work in this area enabled progress in several key areas
affecting organic seed sector growth:
Seed Importing Regulations
Vitalis continued to work on strategies to simplify and standardize currently complex regulations and
processes for importing organic seed into Mexico as a member of the American Seed Trade Association
(ASTA) Mexico Working Group and by attending Border Workshops organized by both ASTA and the
Mexican Seed Trade Association (AMSAC).

Organic Seed Market Data and Development

Vitalis worked with the Organic Trade Association, www.ota.com, on survey questions and contributed
data to inform the 2012 Organic Industry Market Report, and we work with the American Seed Trade
Association (ASTA) Organic Seed Committee on issues and opportunities impacting growth of the
organic seed sector in the US.

Organic Seed Symposium

Vitalis was a proud supporter and presenter at the 2nd Student Organic Seed Symposium entitled Breeding
and Advocating for Resilient Organic Seed Systems hosted by Washington State University, in 2013. A
conference developed by and for post-secondary students involved in a broad spectrum of disciplines in
organic seed systems research. We will once again be supporting the 2014 conference to be held at Cornell
University in Ithaca, New York.

Seed Matters
Vitalis has joined other corporate and university sponsors to support Seed Matters an initiative of the Clif
Bar Family Foundation to advocate for the improvement and protection of organic seed, to ensure healthy,
nutritious and productive crops that benefit people. The initiative focuses on the conservation of crop genetic
diversity, promotion of farmers; roles and rights as seed innovators and stewards and to reinvigorate public seed
research and education. Vitalis supports this initiative through contributing financially to fellowships in organic
plant breeding at the post-graduate level as well as participation in the strategic dialogue about the future of
organic seed (www.seedmatters.org).

Seed Databases
In the US, as part of the Information Working Group of the Organic Seed Alliance (OSA), Vitalis contributed
to the development of a US organic seed database, officially launched in 2012 as the Organic Seed Finder,
www.organicseedfinder.org, hosted by the Association of Official Seed Certifying Agencies (AOSCA),
which now represents over 15 professional seed companies offering certified organic seed. In Canada, we
contributed to the Canadian Organic Growers (COG) organic seed database, which now features all Vitalis
varieties available in Canada at www.FindOrganicSeed.ca.

Amy Kaplan

Organic Technical Sales Promoter, Southwest

Amy Kaplan joined the Vitalis North America team at the end
of 2011 specifically to focus on identifying the best variety
assortment for organic growers in California and to enhance the
logistical processes concerning trial sampling and dissemination.
She had a very daunting task to cover such a large geographical
area, full of diverse grower types and learning so many different
crop requirements. With a formal education in Ecology and
previous work in windbreak establishment, organic seed
production and variety trial coordination, she was a natural
fit, but faced a multitude of challenges.

Bean vines and tomato

plants felt like wild,
magical jungle plants
and still do.

Amy loves working with plants and is a self-described plant

nerd at heart. As her job is fundamentally about plants in all their
diversity, potential, and possibility, she claims that she feels right
at home. Amy also enjoys the fact that her job has two parts:
one where she works totally independently, where she can be
alone with the plants, and another in which she collaborates with
horticulture oriented people all over the globe.
Since childhood, Amy claims that she loved to be in the garden.
Bean vines and tomato plants felt like wild, magical jungle
plants and still do. Pesticide use always seemed fundamentally
at odds with food production. Why would you spray poison
on something that people are going to eat? explains Amy.
She believes that organic agriculture is the way to produce
healthier food for a healthier human population and planet,
and that quality seeds and varieties are the best tools a grower
has available to produce food organically. I do this work to
contribute to the transition of conventional acreage to organics
little by little she states. When asked whether there was a
specific event that brought Amy to this work, she stated that I
knew that I wanted to work in organic agriculture, and I worked
in the field in various ways (farming, agriculture extension) but
it was reading two books, Carol Deppes Breed Your Own
Vegetable Varieties, and then Raul Robinsons Return to
Resistance that really opened my eyes to the idea that crop
improvement is fundamental to advancing organic farming
beyond the margins and into the mainstream.
After nearly two years on the job, Amy has mastered the art of
slotting lettuce, can identify mildew in most crops, knows a tight
versus a loose wrap in cauliflower, floppy tops and correct hilling
methods in leeks, and is now the resident expert for our Central
California team on all varieties to recommend to organic growers
found from Watsonville to King City, California and everywhere
in between.

Shaina Bronstein

Organic Technical Sales Promoter, Northwest

Shaina Bronstein is the newest member of our Vitalis North
America team joining us in July 2013 specifically with the task to
develop a variety assortment and identify organic grower trial
collaborators in the Pacific Northwest US and Western Canada.
Based in Oregon, Shaina is an organic farmer producing seed,
vegetables and pasture poultry for her local market. With a strong
academic background in Plant and Soil Science and several
years previous experience in the seed industry matched with
her farming background, Shaina jumped right in to get up to
speed on learning Vitalis varieties and studying the needs of her
regional organic growers.
Coming from a background in research, Shaina enjoys working
with new commercial varieties and learning how they perform
under different conditions. She also enjoys working with diverse
growers, seeing their operations and helping them find the
varieties they need to be successful. Nurturing new varieties and
conducting field trials, a major component of Shainas job, she
explains is very satisfying. Shaina states that she is motivated by
helping farmers be more productive with less chemical inputs to
produce beautiful, nutritious and delicious food by addressing
agro-ecological systems on all levels including the challenges,
efficiency, and potential productiveness.
Shaina knew from a young age that she wanted to contribute to
improving food security on both a local and global level. From
her perspective farmers need all the support they can get, and

access to high quality professional seeds plays an important role
in helping farmers be successful. Plus, seeds are so beautiful &
hold so much potential! Shaina was always interested in natural
science disciplines as well as foreign service. Working for an
international seed company has allowed her to use her analytical
science-based background while working in the broader global
context of sustainable agriculture.
Shaina has arrived at an appropriate job at Vitalis where the
confluence of her academic background, personal experience
and innate philosophical orientation can be manifested
professionally. Already, in less than half a year, Shaina has
reached out to dozens of regional growers, setting up trials
and cataloguing their needs. Imagine what another year
will bring!

Resistances

index

Descriptions, recommendations and illustrations in this catalogue correspond as closely as possible to tests and practical
experience. This information is provided to assist professional growers and users; however, variable local conditions must be taken
into account. Under no circumstances shall Vitalis Organic Seeds, North America, accept liability based on such information for
deviating results in the cultivated product. The Purchaser is responsible for determining whether the items are suitable for the
intended cultivation type and location.
Important Resistance Information:
Resistances in varieties of our crops are coded, unless
indicated otherwise. See explanation of our coding list at
www.vitalisorganic.com. If a variety is resistant to more
than one pathogen, the individual resistance codes will be
separated by the symbol /.
If in a resistance code of a certain variety reference is made
to certain strains for which the resistance is claimed, this
means that no resistance is claimed to other strains of the
same pathogen.

Two examples:
Tm: A Tm:1-3 resistant sweet pepper variety is resistant
to Tobamo (Bell Pepper Mosaic Virus, Pepper Mild Mottle
Virus, Tobacco Mild Green Mosaic Virus, Tobacco Mosaic
Virus, Tomato Mosaic Virus) race 0,1,2 and 3.
TSWV: A TSWV resistant variety has resistance to certain
non-specified strains of Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus.

If in a resistance code no reference is made to specific

strains of the pathogen for which the resistance is claimed,
this means that resistance is claimed only generally to the
pathogen, and not to specific strains of the pathogen.
