Gerunds and Infinitives (a.2.

1)

Read the text below and then answer the five
questions:

I intend to study in the morning because I enjoy learning in the
natural light

1. How many verbs are there in the sentence?
2. Can you identify examples of a primary verb and a
secondary verb?
3. Do the secondary verbs have the same ending?
4. Which secondary verb has toinfront of it?
5. Which secondary verb ends in ng

Rules: Infinitives have to before the verb and gerund
verbs end in -ing

There are many examples of primary verbs which make the
secondary verb infinitive. Here are some common ones:

Agree Dare Like Refuse
Aim Decide Long Remember
Appear Deserve Love Request
Arrange Expect Manage Resolve
Ask Fail Mean Seek
Attempt Forget Neglect Strive
Be able Get Offer Struggle
Beg Happen Ought Swear
Begin Have Plan Threaten
Cant afford Hesitate Prefer Try
Cant wait Hope Prepare Use
Care Hurry Pretend Wait
Choose Intend Proceed Want
Consent Learn Promise Wish
Continue Leave Propose Would like

Examples:

- He continues to impress the customers
- I expect to hear from my boss about this problem
- I promise to help you
- I refuse to give up on this problem

Now let us look at some common examples of common
Gerunds where the second verb will end in ing and there is
no need to place toinfront of the verb.

Admit Delay Finish Quit
Advise Deny Forbid Recall
Appreciate Discontinue Give up Remember
Avoid Discuss Imagine Resume
Cant help Dislike Keep Risk
Cant stand Dread Dont mind Spend time
Celebrate Enjoyfancy Miss Suggest
Complete Escape Practice Tolerate
Consider Feel like Put off Waste time

Examples:

- She admits loosing the document
- I feel like calling the customer
- I gave up trying to convince him
- I recall talking to him

There are some verbs that can be used with both Gerund and
Infinitives and they mean the same:
Begin, Continue, Like, Love, Prefer, Start
e.g.
I began singing when I was 10 years old
I began to sing when I was 10 years old

However there are some verbs that can be used with both
Gerund and Infinitives but the meaning does change:
Stop, Remember, try,
e.g.
I stopped talking to my friend ( we are no longer talking)
I stopped to talk to my friend ( I stopped an activity so that I
could talk to my friend)

Now its your turn:

Try and make as many sentences as possible using the above
verbs. Once you are familiar with them try and write a
paragraph with a mixture of gerunds and infinitives.
