After years of waiting and an-
ticipation, the library is finally
getting some upgrades.
At the Sept. 9 meeting, commis-
sioners adopted a bond ordinance
to improve the Haddonfield Pub-
lic Library. The borough appro-
priated $1.83 million, including
$354,000 as the down payment,
which the library board is provid-
ing.
The Haddonfield library, which
began construction at its present
site in 1917 and was completed in
1919, has been around for almost
100 years.
As folks know, we are finally,
finally having our library updat-

The Sun
Parents, residents and teachers
came out to the Sept. 11 Haddon-
field Board of Education meeting
to have a voice in regard to the
teachers contracts, asking for a
decision to be made soon.
Betty Anne Young, a mother of
two children in the school system,
started the talks.
Im here to talk about the
teachers. The individuals who
spend six hours a day with the
two most important people in my
life, my kids, Young said.
Young credited her childrens
academic achievements and ad-
vancements to the teachers.
Her daughter, having been clas-
sified as having sensory issues
and lack of speech and language
development at the age of 3, was
declassified before she started
kindergarten. Her son was classi-
fied in the autism spectrum, hav-
ing Aspergers.
His world opened up because
of his teachers. They taught him
life skills, social skills, all those
things that many of us take for
granted, Young said. They
helped Timmy see the world to be
less scary to a boy who just didnt
understand or know how to navi-
gate it.
Young also commended the Di-
amond Team, who helped her son
during a time he couldnt attend
school because of his anxiety. She
also acknowledged his counselor
who helped him during a difficult
time of loss with their family.
To the world, you may be one,
but to one you are the world,
Young quoted to all the teachers.
After her story, Young finished
with a plea to the board, asking to
settle the contract with the teach-
ers quickly and give them what
they deserve.

Vote yes to avoid collapse
of water, sewer infrastructure
In a recent issue of The Haddonfield
Sun, our friend Walter Weidenbacher of-
fers an incomplete, disjointed and, ulti-
mately, failed argument opposing the sale
of the boroughs water and sewer system to
New Jersey American Water.
It is my opinion that Mr. Weidenbacher
has reached this point not through a seri-
ous and sustained examination of the is-
sues surrounding the system, but rather
because of a distrust of the current bor-
ough administration, both commissioners
and unelected staff.
His argument, if we can call it that, is lit-
tle more than a string of platitudes, bro-
mides and clichs, with no mention of the
serious debt that already encumbers the
system and will likely strangle it in the
coming decades. Some water mains date
from 1889. Sixty percent of the water mains
must be replaced over the next 30 years.
Where does Mr. Weidenbacher expect the
money to come from? Does he have a
money tree? An orchard?
please see LETTER, page 13
N
o one would ever accuse Gov.
Christie of being reserved, of
not speaking his mind, or of
not taking chances.
No one.
Last week, he solidified that once
again when he decided to lift New Jer-
seys ban on sports betting. His deci-
sion which came as a surprise to
many around the state and nation is
in direct opposition to what he said a
month ago when he told us all to forget
about sports gambling.
With the governors decision, and
directive to law enforcement, casinos
and horse race tracks can start offer-
ing bets on professional and collegiate
sports as soon as a judge affirms
that what Christie is doing is legal, or
at least isnt illegal.
A federal law prohibits sports bet-
ting in all but four states. When New
Jersey challenged that law, it went all
the way up the legal ladder, but the
Supreme Court decided not to hear the
case. So, alas, no overturn of the feder-
al law.
But a federal appeals court just
below the Supreme Court said nothing
was preventing New Jersey from re-
pealing its own ban and not regulating
the industry much like the states of
Washington and Colorado do with
marijuana.
So last week, thats what Christie
did. He repealed the state ban on
sports betting and said New Jersey
wont regulate, license or authorize
sports betting officially. Acting state
Attorney General John Hoffman said,
in fact, that the state will be telling
casinos and tracks that they wont be
held liable for sports wagering.
Its not the avenue that Christie, or
any one else at the state level, wanted
to take, but it seems as though its the
road they feel they were forced down
because they want sports wagering so
badly.
And can you blame them for this?
Three Atlantic City casinos shut down
in the last month, and one more, the
Trump Taj Mahal, just announced it
would be closing in November. Those
four closings will eventually result in
the loss of more than 10,000 jobs and
be a hit on a big tax money-maker for
the state.
Bets cant be placed yet a federal
court is expected to affirm Christies
position in a few weeks and when
they are, you wont be able to bet on
any professional sports event held in
New Jersey (no Jets, Giants or Devils
home games) or on any New Jersey
college team no matter where they
play (no Ray Rice alma mater). Every-
thing else, though, will be offered on
the big board.
While the NFL and other profession-
al sports leagues might fight this
move, its unlikely they will prevail
forever. Even NBA commissioner
Adam Silver said its inevitable and
that his league will ultimately partic-
ipate in that.
Will this be the shot in the arm New
Jerseys gambling landscape needs?
Can it finally, once and for all, turn
into Las Vegas East? Its hard to tell.
in our opinion
Its time to take the points
Christie takes chance on New Jersey sports betting as the underdog

Countywide flu shot program

kicks off on Oct. 1
The change of sea-
sons leaves many peo-
ple feeling under the
weather. But you can
avoid getting sick by
getting a flu shot. The
Camden County De-
partment of Health
and Human Services
recommends that
everyone get vaccinated this flu season,
especially children and seniors who
are most vulnerable.
The Freeholder Board has sched-
uled 18 site locations for the 2014 Sea-
sonal Influenza Immunization
Program. As is the tradition, the pro-
gram begins at the annual Senior
Health Fair, which this year takes place
on Oct. 1, in Cooper River Park at the
Jack Curtiss Stadium, starting at 10:00
a.m. and continuing through 2:00 p.m.
When you visit the 20th annual fair
for your flu shot, youll also find dozens
of health information tables, games,
prizes and lunch for all senior citizens.
The launch of the flu shot program is
coordinated with the fair because men
and women age 65 and older are among
the high priority groups for annual
shots. As always, we ask that seniors
receiving Medicare to bring their
Medicare ID cards with them.
The flu shots are provided for no-
out-of-pocket cost. Seniors that register
with the Camden County Division of
Senior and Disabled Services will
enjoy a complimentary lunch at the
fair. Call (856) 374-2782 or log on to
www.camdencounty.com to RSVP.
In order to keep your family healthy
this flu season, we want to make this
beneficial service easy to access. That
is why we host immunization sites at
convenient locations
across Camden County,
in addition to the an-
nual Senior Health
Fair.
The flu cannot only
create challenges at
home, but it can have a
negative effect on the
workplace crippling
businesses and suffocating production.
The flu can spread quickly through
any office and infect several employees
through the simple act of coughing. If
you are a business owner, you should
also encourage your employees to get
vaccinated. It literally pays to get a
flu shot.
Pregnant women and chronically ill
people are other high priority groups.
Flu shots are also recommended for
people with weakened immune or car-
diovascular systems, or with chronic
metabolic diseases, renal dysfunction
or blood disorders. Youngsters aged
nine and older must be accompanied
by an adult. Children under nine need
two shots, a month apart, and should
be seen by a pediatrician. For unin-
sured children, call CamCare at (856)
541-9811 or the Camden County Health
Center in Bellmawr at (856) 931-2700.
For a complete list of flu shot loca-
tions, visit www.camdencoutny.com.
For other information, contact the De-
partment of Health and Human Serv-
ices at (800) 999-9045.

Grace Church Yard Sale is Sept. 27
up how Haddonfield Memorial
High School was recently ranked
the second public high school in
the state by New Jersey Monthly
and how its salaries are less than
some of the surrounding dis-
tricts.
All of the top 10 districts have
started the school year with con-
tracts for their teachers, with the
exception of Haddonfield,
Errichetto said.
Errichetto made sure to men-
tion that he did not have any chil-
dren in the school district, but
that he is a Haddonfield taxpayer.
He supported the teachers, saying
without them, classes are com-
promised. He finished by urging
the board to resolve the contract.
Board President Glenn Mora-
marco said the board is unhappy
it couldnt reach an agreement.
They want to, too, but not reach-
ing a settlement isnt outside the
norm.
In fact, two-thirds of the dis-
tricts in New Jersey that had con-
tracts that expired in June of last
year are starting the school year
without new contracts and are
continuing to work under the old
one, Moramarco said. So that
puts us in the majority, and we
are not happy with that situation.
We are happy to continue to meet
with the HEA negotiating com-
mittee as frequently as they want.
This is something we take very
seriously and want to reach an
agreement as well.
Matthew Maguire, a resident
and father as well as teacher, said
he loves being a teacher, but the
reality is he has to work side jobs
as well. He is a bartender on Fri-
days, a tutor and a construction
worker during the summer.
You keep saying its not out of
the ordinary to be out of a con-
tract, but we keep saying, well,
were not ordinary. Were second
in the state. We keep hearing
from parents, the board, from
everyone how great we are. But it
is hard surviving like this. There
is no reason we cant settle. We

need to settle now, Maguire said.
Other parents and teachers
spoke before co-president of the
Haddonfield Education Associa-
tion Corrine Welsh made her case
to the board.
Were asking for a reasonable
settlement. Were asking for
things in line with local averages.
I would love to ask for more than
average. Frankly, this is an above
average staff, Welsh said.
Thank you for your time; we ap-
preciate it. We hope we see the ap-
preciation at the table as well as
here tonight.
The board and teachers are
waiting for a state mediator to
pick a date and time of when they
will be meeting next.

This is a great opportunity for
families to come out and have

span across elementary school
borders. There will be games run
by members of the newly formed

kids for one last time before au-

There will also be fun raffle

His characterization of New
Jersey American Water as a for-
profit corporate monopoly, while
perhaps soothing the anarcho-
progressive beast within, is
both erroneous and downright
silly.
NJAW will freeze rates for
three years. After that, any rate
increase must pass muster before
the New Jersey Board of Public
Utilities, not known for its kind-
ness and generosity to a for-prof-
it corporate monopoly.
Mr. Weidenbacher also states
that history shows us that pru-
dent political leadership can ac-
complish the goal of maintaining
the water and sewer system as a
going, profitable concern. Would
that be the same type of political
leadership that gave us the Cam-
den County Municipal Utilities
Authority?
If we want to avoid both a fi-
nancial debacle and a collapse of
our water and sewer infrastruc-
ture, a yes vote in November is
imperative.

NICK COHEN/The Sun
No. 6 Jack Dugan of Haddonfield breaks away from a Collingswood High School defender in a game played
Thursday, Sept. 11 at Scout Field. The Bulldawgs rode two first-half goals to a 3-0 win over Collingswood,
as Dugan and Matt Felt were the goal scorers for Haddonfield.
Soccer breakaway
into compliance with the Ameri-
can with Disabilities Act with
restrooms, elevators and staircas-
es because it is in dire need of
some updating, Mayor Jeff
Kasko said.
Residents commended the
board for getting the project start-
ed and completed to this point.
Citizens voiced that its been a
long, overdue project and it is
greatly appreciated.
However, questions on financ-
ing were brought up, with some
asking where the money came
from and what the money is being
used for.
According to Kasko, the money
for the down payment was from
very generous donations specifi-
cally for the library, one including
a half million dollars that a gen-
tleman left in his will. The library
will have close to a million dollars
for this year, the library board
said.
The $1.83 million is a number
built on the estimated cost of the
improvement, with contingency
built in.
The bonds issued to the library
will help with the addition of an
elevator and handicap bath-
rooms, ADA improvements, a
new roof, heating and air-condi-
tioning system improvements
and various other interior im-
provements, along with improve-
ments the library board request-
ed.
The money we are using from
the trust is for work that the li-
brary board requested to be done
in addition to the work the com-
missioners are doing, Sharon
McCullough, Haddonfield admin-
istrator, said.
The concern of the front win-
dows being replaced was brought
up, since they were not included
in the improvement cost and are
not being replaced at this time.
However, a citizen suggested the
windows be re-caulked, since it
has been seven years since they
were last caulked.
After all concerns over the li-
brary were discussed, the board
adopted the ordinance, setting the
plan for improvements to the li-
brary into motion.
In other news:
Haddonfield recognized Sept.
19 as POW/MIA Recognition Day.
Commissioners asked that resi-
dents join them in honoring for-
mer American POWs and those
Americans still unaccounted for
as a result of their service. The
United States flag will be dis-
played throughout the center of
Haddonfield in an effort to re-
mind all Americans the signifi-
cance of this day.
The board recognized and
congratulated The Haddon Fort-
nightly for its 120th anniversary
this year and thanked it for all
that it has done.
September was proclaimed
National Recovery Month. The
board called upon the people of
Haddonfield to observe the month
with appropriate programs, activ-
ities and ceremonies.
