Competition on “Effective Media Interventions on Tobacco Control”

Health Communication and Education is an effective means of bringing about changes in


behaviors and lifestyles that are conducive to good health. The power of various forms of media
in communicating thoughts, ideas and knowledge is well known in all walks of life. Media
campaigns to promote healthy lifestyle can serve as keys for motivating and bringing about
behavior change in an individual, and subsequently the society.
In spite of the vast scope of the media in influencing the minds of millions, it is not used
effectively to create awareness about contemporary health issues. In view of this, the School of
Health System Studies at Tata Institute of Social Sciences introduces “From Ideas to
EXPRESSIONS for Health” – a competition on presenting effective media interventions for
health related information dissemination and education.
The competition is part of “Clairvoyance 09” and is open to participation from students of varied
streams of knowledge such as Public Health, Media and Cultural Studies and all other
institutions which study media and communication as part their curriculum. The competition is
an attempt to generate innovative and influential media messages, which shall be utilized by
funding agencies, academicians, public health service providers and media personnel.

Theme: This year’s theme is “Effective Media Interventions for Tobacco Control”.

Eligibility: Students currently pursuing Public Health, Media and Culture Studies, Mass
Communication, or any other Health or Media related discipline. (Including TISS)
Entries will be accepted in the form of slogans, posters, informative drawings, video or audio
clippings, and other audio-visual medium.
The media messages should be innovative, self created and expressive of one of the following
issues:
a. Ill effects / dangers of tobacco use
b. Public health implications of tobacco use in the public places
c. Control of tobacco use at public places
d. Implementation of tobacco control act at public place

Form of Media Details


Poster / Drawing / Slogan Size: The poster should be submitted to us in
the size of A3 format.

Audio-Visual Expected duration of the clip: Maximum 2


minutes.
(Accepted formats of clip Shorter clips will be considered especially for
a. Power Point show their commercial importance.
b. Flash movies
c. Video clippings
d. Jingles or Sound Bytes)

Announcement 3rd December 2009 through websites, and


posters being circulated at different institutes.

Last date of submitting the media text The entries should reach us by 17th December
2009 by 5.00 pm

Scrutiny and Judging Will be done at the Institute by the experts in


the field of Public Health and Media, and
faculty of Health Education and Promotion
from the School of Health System Studies.
Decision of the judges will be final and
binding

Declaration of winners and display of posters All Posters will be displayed at Clairvoyance
/ drawings / slogans : 2009 on 20th December 2009.

Display of other forms of media messages Commendable audio-visual entries shall be


played in between the sessions on 20th
December 2009.

Prizes The three best entries will receive attractive


prizes.
