54th AGM of TMMAI
Textile Machinery Manufacturers' Association (India)
The 54th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Textile Machinery Manufacturers' Association (India) was
held on 27th August, at Hotel Trident in Mumbai. Padma Bhushan Dr. T. Ramasami, Former, Secretary,
Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, was the Chief Guest. Mr. Yogesh Kusumgar,
President & CEO, Kusumgar Corporates, Mumbai, attended as the Guest of Honour.
We are reproducing below some highlights of the textile engineering industry (TEI) extracted from the
speech of Mr. Prakash Bhagwati, Chairman, TMMA (I) at the AGM where he presented the Annual Report
for the year 2013-14 along with the audited statement of accounts of the Association.
Last two year witnessed lowest GDP Growth rate in this decade, it was 4.5% for the year 2012-13 and
4.7% for the year 2013-14. Inflation has remained during this period stubbornly high at a dangerous level
of 9.49% on an average basis. Policy basic rate of Interest therefore was raised to 8% by RBI to tame
inflation. This high cost of capital has seriously effected investment in capital goods. Textile industry is
badly hit as demand on account of high inflation has not grown at all. We, however, have witnessed in
recent past growing of green shoots and we have started believing in the election promise of our Prime
Minister that Good Days are here to Come.
If we look at status of textile engineering industry (TEI) we are collectively having a
production capacity of approx. 9000 Crores of Rupees between 1400+ units spread all
over India. Capacity utilization is approx. between 55 to 60%.
Chairman TMMA(I) Mr. Prakash K. Bhagwati delivering his welcome
address. To his right are: Mr. S. Chakraborty - Secretary General,
Chief Guest Dr. T. Ramasami-Former Secretary-Government of India-
Department of Science & Technology, Guest of Honour Mr. Yogesh
Kusumgar-President & CEO-Kusumgar Corporates, Mr. J. Anand- First
Vice-Chairman and Mr. Pratik R. Bachkaniwala- Hon. Treasurer ,TMMAI.
The total requirement/demand from our
customer industry is 14,000 crores.
The area of concern is that more than
55 to 60% of the requirement is met
through imports. Out of huge imports
of textile machinery aggregating to
approx. 9000 crores more than 20%
of the same is in form of used ma-
chines. As textile industry is very frag-
mented and major part of the same
being in unorganized sector, new in-
vestment in equipment does not give
a competitive edge against global play-
ers like China, Pakistan & Bangladesh.
India has huge potential to become
as large player as China in textiles.
India ranks amongst the 1st three
countries as far as cotton production
is concerned. Trained manpower is in
abundance and has the benefit of
home market where consumption is
steadily growing on account of increasing income. If we have to attain this status we need to focus all our
energy on Innovation and Excellence
Our 80% + members are SME units & because of resources constraint would not be able to undertake
R & D efforts on sustained basis, neither they will be able to invest into dedicated facility for quality
assurance & training .
At association we have been playing facilitator role & with financial support in form of grants, we together
with our members have got involved in various projects which will bring in desired sustainability to our
efforts to attain world class quality standards. I must compliment DHI who have continuously encouraged
us in realising our goals of creating a stable infrastructure necessary for acquiring excellence in TEI.
For promoting innovation and Research & Development following projects have been undertaken :

The newly developed Ring Frame LR
J9 has various unique features such as
Hi-tech unique suction compacting sys-
tem with easy handling, AC Servo drives
for 4th roller to have central adjustment of
compact tension and duo compact nozzle
with unique suction arrangement compact-
ing. In the compact spinning process the
fibres are compacted by the suction sys-
tem and are kept under very low tension
draft to orient the fibres. Compacted fibres
are carried forward in a controlled/
channelized manner by the perforated
apron/suction slot till the nip of the fourth
roller which results in reduction yarn hairi-
ness by 30%; yarn strength increases by
10-15% and end breakages are reduced
as compared to conventional yarn. This
process improves performance in down-
stream process like warping, sizing &
weaving. Effective and uniform suction is
maintained in every spindle by means of
specially designed variable suction boots
and inverter driven fan. The product has a user friendly 4/4
drafting system with lesser parts. The other benefits of this
product are waste reduction, value addition, labour and better
