Advanced Topics in Survey Methods Service de mthodes statistiques (OFS) 4311017CS 2 3 crdits Et Examen crit.
Objective: Learn up-to-date methodological tools to handle and analyze surveys as they are actually applied in public statistics. The course will be given by methodology experts of the Swiss Federal Statistical Office and illustrated by real-life case-studies from their own experience.
Content: Data stemming from a survey with random sampling design undergo several steps of treatment and analysis. These steps will be treated in this course module in the order as they occur in practice: Treatment of erroneous and missing data, handling of outliers and non-response; development of appropriate estimation procedures (usually leading to extrapolation weights) and calibration to known population totals; variance estimation methods for finite populations. Multivariate analysis of survey data give rise to special problems: they will be illustrated by the analysis of compositional data and by the analysis of complex survey data whose dependence structure requires special treatment.

Econometrics Jaya KRISHNAKUMAR 4311007CR 2+2 6 crdits Et Examen crit.
Objectifs : To present the fundamental models and methods in econometrics.
Contenu: The aim of this course is to cover important econometric models and methods. After a brief introduction recalling the classical regression model, the course will go on to the generalized regression model, examining successively the autocorrelated errors model, the heteroscedastic errors model (including the conditionally heteroscedastic case) and the seemingly unrelated regressions model. Then we will introduce the stochastic regression framework in which the instrumental variables method and the generalized method of moments will be presented and applied in the context of dynamic and simultaneous equation models. Finally we will briefly look at some special topics such as qualitative variables models, panel data models and cointegration models.

Generalized Linear and Additive Models Eva CANTONI RENAUD 4311001CR 2+2 6 crdits Hiver Examen crit.
Objectifs: Provide a set of tools for the analysis of the relationship between measurements made on (groups of) subjects or objects for large classes of responses (e.g. nominal, ordinal and continuous data).
Contenu: In this course we will consider extensions of the well known linear model in two different directions: parametrically through the family of generalized linear models (GLM) and non parametrically via generalized additive models (GAM). In the first part we will study in particular logistic, Poisson, and Gamma regression. Extensions to related models for survival analysis, and to clustered and longitudinal analysis will be addressed shortly. The second part of the course will deal with the nonparametric counterpart of GLM which replaces the parametric relationship with a more flexible nonparametric form.

Multilevel models Paolo GHISLETTA 73122CR 2 3 crdits Et Examen crit.

Practice of Statistical Learning Gilbert RITSCHARD 4311012CR 2+2 6 crdits Et Examen crit.
Objectifs: This course provides a general introduction to data mining and statistical learning. Broadly, the aim of statistical learning is to induce a classifier or prediction model from data in order to predict the outcome of new unseen cases. In the social sciences, the concern is more the understanding of the phenomenon rather than classification performance. Therefore, we shall, among the various learning approaches (linear methods of classification, kernel methods, support vector machine, neural network,...), focus on two methods, namely induction trees and Bayesian networks, that, beside good classification performance, provide valuable knowledge about the way the predictive attributes influence the predicted variable. The participants will be initiated to the practice of induction trees (with Answer Tree and Sipina) and of Bayesian Networks. Special attention will be devoted to validation strategies and to interpretation concerns.
Contenu: 1. General overview of statistical learning methods: linear methods of classification, kernel methods, support vector machine, neural network,... 2. Induction trees: principle, validation, interpretation, practice with specialized softwares. 3. Bayesian networks: principle, validation, interpretation, practice.

Statistical Consulting Diego Kuonen, Statoo consulting 4311016CS 2 3 crdits Et
Objectifs : The objective is to provide an introduction to the practice of statistical consulting and related skills. At the end of the course students will have the skills to understand and be able to put to practice basic skills in statistical consulting such as helping the client to fully state and assess their problem and determining the statistical analysis techniques that might be necessary to address real world consulting problems.
Contenu : Statistical consulting is best learned by doing it. As such, the course will focus on the themes: - understanding the statistical consulting process; - developing effective communication skills, both written and verbal; - obtaining experience through case studies. The lectures will be centred around case studies. Students will be divided into three (to five) consulting teams containing at least three students. Consulting teams are given an assignment for every case study, with the full data set and they must produce a report and give a presentation. For every case study the teams have a leader that will give the presentations and write the report. The position of team leader will rotate for different case studies.
Statistique II Eva CANTONI RENAUD 4203033CR 2+2 6 crdits Et Examen crit.

Visual Data Analysis Eugen HORBER 4311020 2+2 6 crdits Hiver Contrle continu valu hors session.
Objectifs : This course introduces the principles and tools of visual data analysis. Its main aim is to show that visual tools are as essential to statistical practice as are numerical tools. Although graphical tools have always been used by statisticians and data analysts, it is only with the appearance of J ohn Tukey's pioneering 1977 book "Exploratory Data Analysis" that visualization became far more concrete and effective, as well as an important field in statistical research. Modern (statistical) software now offers a great many graphical and visual tools, often ignored by many users. Visual, exploratory tools have recently become an essential component of "Data Mining", "Knowledge Discovery" or similarly labelled areas, stressing data and objective driven analysis, where visual interaction with the user plays a key role. In addition to introducing participants to a wide variety of visual tools, the course aims to stimulate a general attitude and awareness towards methodological problems based on a creative visual approach. Participants are expected to present a research paper at the end of the course.
Contenu: Topics include: The philosophy of visual data exploration; classical and modern graphical tools and their role in highly interactive data analysis; visual navigation of data tables, multivariate (high- dimensional) exploration and visualization; visual perception; tool design and ergonomic issues; software for data exploration and visualization.
