In film and in literature, medieval life seems heroic, entertaining, and romantic. In
reality, life in the Middle Ages was sometimes all these things and it was hard, uncertain,
and often dangerous.
For safety and for defense, people in the Middle Ages formed small communities
around a central lord or master. Most people lived on a manor, which consisted of the
castle, the church, the village, and the surrounding farm land.
Lets see... What do you know about The Middle Ages?

A day in the Abbey by Murray

Yesterday I was sleeping deeply when one of the Sacristans assistant
woke me up. We went downstairs to the church for the service. When we
were going down we heard the churchs bell. The service lasted about twenty
minutes. Then we went back to bed. I was sleeping really well when the
assistant woke me up again. We had a short service. We were praying when
the choir monks started having breakfast. We couldnt talk during the meal.
We were having breakfast when one of the monks started to read a book.
After having breakfast we had another service. Then we had a meeting.
When I was reading some rules, the Sacristan entered the room. After our
meeting we had our main service of the day. While the cook was preparing
lunch we washed our hands. The meal consisted of bread, vegetables and
wine. As usual, we couldnt talk. While we were having dinner a monk was
reading aloud another book. In the afternoon, I worked in the garden. I was
finishing my work when I heard the bell. After that, we took our last meal.
We were walking at the cloister when bed time arrived. We went to bed at

What tense is after when?

What tense is before when?

When and While
They join sentences.
We use them when two actions were happening at the same time.
Eg: When/ While I was cooking , my brother was watching TV.
When the action in past continuous is interrupted (simple past)
The telephone rang when/ while I was having a bath.
While: must be followed by a continuous form.

31
Mdulo II

Past continuous and Simple past

Use 1:
We use the Past Continuous to indicate that a longer action in the past was
interrupted. The interruption is usually an action in the Simple Past. Remember
this can be a real interruption or just an interruption in time.
(El pasado continuo tambin se utiliza para indicar un accin que estaba en
proceso y fue interrumpida, por otra accin que est en pasado simple.
Recuerden que esta interrupcin puede ser real o solo un interrupcin en el
tiempo. )
EXAMPLES:
I was watching TV when the telephone rang.

When the phone rang, she was writing a letter.

While we were having a picnic, it started to rain.

Sally was working when Joe had the car accident.

Use 2: Atmosphere
In English we often use a series of parallel actions to describe an atmosphere
in the past.
(En ingls a veces utilizamos acciones paralelas para describir la atmsfera o
clima de un relato.)
EXAMPLE:
When I walked into the office, several people were busily typing, some were
talking on the phones, the boss was yelling directions, and customers were
waiting to be helped. One customer was yelling at a secretary and waving his
hands. Others were complaining to each other about the bad service.

Lesson 3
New Ideas from the East

The Muslims conquered Jerusalem. The Christians started a war called the
crusades. Crusade means war of the cross . It comes from the same Latin word as
crucifix and cross. In spite of this, some of the Christians admired the way the
Muslims lived.
The crusades copied these ways and took them back to Europe. They brought
the carpets back which they hanged on their castles walls. A few people improved their
table manners. They stopped using their fingers and began to use forks as Arabs did.
They learned to use spices with their food.
Trade improved between East and West; other new ideas appeared in Europe.
They also had better ways of sailing, telling the time and working out sums.
The new products that Europe had from the Turks, China and India were:

Lesson 4
Markets and Fairs

Many medieval towns had regular markets where traders could set up tables or
stalls in the centre of the town. People went to the centre from the countryside to buy or
sell.
The stallholders had to pay a fixed amount of money to the town council and
agree to be honest and fair traders. Many officials checked the measures and the
weights. There were also special markets on certain days: fish markets, corn markets
or cloth markets.

Read and listen to the following dialogue between a cheese stallholder and a customer.

Customer: Yes, Its OK.
Stallholder: Anything else?
Customer: Can I have some provolone cheese?
Stallholder: How much would you like?
Customer: I want a piece of cheese as big as the piece you gave me before.

Do you remember these words?
small big - expensive bad good heavy intelligent beautiful
What kind of words are they? Verbs, adjectives, nouns?

They are adjectives. They describe people or things and they are used before nouns.
Eg. This is a beautiful place.

Adjectives Comparative adjectives
Small smaller than
Big bigger than
Expensive less/ more expensive than
Bad worse than
Good better than
Intelligent less /more intelligent than
Beautiful less /more beautiful than

68
Mdulo II

The comparative adjectives are used to compare two people or things.

Eg: The first piece of cheese was smaller than the second piece of cheese.
The second piece of cheese was bigger than the first one.
We use more/ less with long adjectives (two or more syllables)
Eg: Studying English is more interesting than studying Latin. (ms interesante
que)
Studying Latin is less interesting than studying English. (menos interesante
que)

When we want to say that two things are the same we use as+adjective +
as
Eg: I am as tall as my brother. (My brother and I are the same height).
The piece of provolone was as big/ small as the piece of parmesan cheese.

Now look at these examples from the dialogue.
Customer: Oh, no Id like a bit bigger piece than that one.
Stallholder: Is this all right ? Its much bigger than the first piece of cheese

When do we use a bit and when do we use much?

Read the following dialogue and find more examples.
One of the servants is doing the shopping. She goes to different stallholders in order to
buy everything her lord and his family need.

At the greengrocers

Stallholder: Well, my dear, silk is much more expensive than velvet.
Rose: What about satin?

Rose: Ok, thank you.

To compare people, places and things we use:
1) a comparative adjective + than.
A medieval town was dirtier than a modern town.
A medieval town was less/ more beautiful than a modern town.

The role of women in medieval society was much less important than the role of
men. If women wanted to have a place in society, they needed to get married or to
become nuns.
Marriages were often arranged by fathers so they could be much richer. Women
usually got married when they were 14 years old.
For a peasant girl whose father wasn't a free man, getting married was much
more difficult, because the lord had to decide who she was getting married to. In some

the wedding night, with the bride.

Lesson 6
The Black Death

Read the following text.

In 1348, a terrible plague came to Britain. This plague killed millions of
people in Europe. Nobody is really sure where it started but it reached Europe
from Turkey.
People who caught the plague developed large boils under their arms. Their
arms and legs became covered in black spots and they couldnt eat. They began
to cough blood and in a few days they were dead.
Medieval people were terrified on it. There seemed to be no cure and it
affected all kind of people, rich and poor.
We know now that the Black Death was the bubonic plague. Its caused by
a bacillus (germ) which lives in the fleas that are found on black rats.
The fleas bite the rats, which infects their blood. The black rats seemed to
have moved into Europe, possibly because of weather conditions. The rats
travelled on the ships that crossed the Mediterranean Sea bringing cloth, spices
and other goods from Turkey.
The Franciscan Friar Michael of Piazza, described how the plague reached
Sicily in 1347. At the beginning of October 1347, while I was walking on the
ship deck, I found many dead bodies. The infection spread to anyone who met
those bodies
