Operations manager is a component of System Center suite used for monitoring and reporting of IT
infrastructure.
Why use SCOM?
It helps to monitor up/down of servers and network.
Monitor mission critical applications.
Complete network port statistics.
Whats new in SCOM 2012?
No more single point of failure root management server. All management servers now operate
as peers.
RMS Emulator role Provides backwards compatibility for management packs that require an
RMS.
Comprehensive network monitoring, down to the port level. No licenses necessary for network
device monitoring.
Important Terminology
SCOM Agent A service installed on a system which collects data, compares sampled data to predefined
values, creates alerts and runs responses. Basically, SCOM agent is the one that we deploy to the servers
that we want to monitor. SCOM agent that collects information based on the management packs that
we load on the operations manager servers. It will compare the data from the sampled data that we
configure into management packs.
Management group The basic unit of functionality in SCOM. Minimally consists of management
server, the operational database, and the reporting data warehouse database.
Management packs It defines the information that the agent collects and returns to the management
server for a specific application. Management packs tells agent to what to look for and how to look for.
Operating System Environment (OSE) It is an instance of operating system. This includes any number
of applications configured to run on it.
SCOM Roles
Audit collection services collector Receives and processes events from ACS forwarders and sends this
data to the ACS database.
ACS database The central repository for events that are generated by an audit policy within an ACS
deployment.
ACS forwarder A part of the SCOM agent; submits ACS information to ACS collectors.
Operational database This contains all configuration data for the management group and stores all
monitoring data that is collected and processed for the management group. By default, operational
database stores data of 7 days.
Management server Management servers administer the management group configuration,
administer and communicate with agents, and communicate with the databases in the management
group.
Data warehouse database Stores monitoring and alerting data for historical purposes.
