Vineyard Music Group - who are we?
Vineyard Music Group (VMG) was established soon after the first Vineyard
Christian Fellowship was founded in Southern California approximately 20
years ago. It was set up to record the songs that were being written and
sung by the worship leaders during the services. The vision that grew out of
that was to document, model and impart the heart and activity of worship
within the Vineyard.
VMG is primarily ministry based, which means that any profits generated by
sales of VMG products are ploughed directly back into ministry. Within that,
VMG operates sound business practices and therefore the functions of
publishing and distribution, commonly seen in record companies, are carried
out.
VMG has grown and evolved into a worldwide organisation. There are
currently six VMG offices throughout the world in the USA, UK, Canada,
South Africa, New Zealand and Switzerland with many more planned to open
around the world. Our vision is to equip the Church with resources and
training to enable the body of Christ to be drawn into a deeper relationship
with the Lord.

Vineyard worship values
When it comes to worship in the Vineyard there are three main values that
we hold dear. These values underpin our approach to worship, both in the
spiritual sense (in how we conduct our everyday lives) and also in the
practical expression of our worship (through the writing and recording of
songs).
The following are excerpts from Brian Doerksen's teaching on these values:

Value 1 - Intimacy
For most of my life I remember singing songs in church about God, or
singing songs that were exhortations to live better. But, what I was hungry
for, even as a boy was to communicate directly with my Maker. I wanted to
sing to God and I wanted to reveal my heart to Him and for Him to reveal His
heart to me.
Intimacy in worship is one of the foundations of the Vineyard movement.
When John and Carol Wimber and others began meeting in a home in 1977
in California, they gathered because they were hungry to meet with God.
And so, for years Vineyard worship around the world has been marked by
songs that are simple expressions of love and devotion.
If intimacy in the "narrow" sense means we sing to God rather than just about
Him, in the broad sense it means we live our whole lives in the presence of
God. If we give ourselves away to other loves, to other gods, we will lose
intimacy with God, or we will try to manufacture it in a way that is shallow.
That is an empty encounter for both God and us. We cannot spend our
entire week in pursuit of the world and then wonder why our worship on
Sunday feels flat.
The Bible is full of accounts of intimate worship. As David looked after the
sheep he sang intimate songs to the Lord. He continued to do the same
when he became king of Israel. The woman in Luke 7 worshipped intimately
as she poured perfume on the feet of Jesus.
Intimacy will always be our highest calling and aim in this life and then, when
we pass on to the other side, it's only going to get better.
Value 2 - Integrity
If there ever was a time when people are looking for integrity in leaders, that
time is now. It's evident that people are expecting more integrity from political
leaders and business leaders. They are expecting trustworthiness in all of
life, and are not quite so willing to separate the private from the public. So
what does this have to do with worship? In my opinion everything. Integrity
means everything to God and it means everything to us. Integrity simply
means wholeness, naturalness, and the condition of being undivided. A
consistency between private and public life.
It's who you are and the way you live that count before God . . ..
That's the kind of people the Father is out looking for: those who are simply
and honestly themselves before Him in their worship. (John 4 "The
Message")
God loves our worship when we are ourselves, and when we live our whole
lives as lovers of God. And when it's time to gather together with other
believers to worship, we look for leaders with integrity that we can be "safe"
with. That's why I have committed myself to the part of the Body of Christ that
I have. I trust those who lead me because I see integrity in their lives. A
genuine naturalness is one of the things I have loved about "Vineyard
Worship" since I first came in contact with it in the mid-80's. I sensed no
pretence in John Wimber and other leaders as I encountered them on and off
stage.
Amos 5:23 "Away with your hymns of praise - they are mere noise to my
ears.
I will not listen to your music, no matter how lovely it is."
We need to face the truth that if we don't have integrity God hates our
worship! There is such protection in this truth. God doesn't want us to come
to Him as we think we should be, but as we are. And if what we are is not
pleasing to Him, and not in line with His Word, then we cry out for mercy to
change. That's all He asks of us.
Value 3 - Accessibility
In the past few years our society has made huge strides to make public
places more accessible to those with special needs. People with
wheelchairs, hearing difficulties and the like can enjoy more events and
places than ever before. Sometimes, as a worship leader, I need to ask
some of the same questions that brought about change in the places we live.
Is our worship accessible for all, or is it only accessible for those who are
artistically able and mystical?
Making worship accessible sometimes means that we need something
called restraint in worship. I know it's not a popular word, but to have real
worship you have to have both passion and restraint. Restraint is the
backbone of making music that others can follow and enter into. Here are a
few tips on restraint during worship:
1. Restraint is picking songs that will say what the majority of the people
gathered want to say to God.
2. Restraint is the discipline not to play or sing all the time - if you fill in the
spaces with your "stuff" the music cannot breath and the congregation
feels overwhelmed.
3. Restraint is the realisation that the notes you don't play are just as
important as the ones you do.
4. Restraint is not adding tons of embellishments to a song that others
cannot follow or sing.
Restraint in worship isn't necessarily easy and it doesn't always feel good to
you as a worship leader. But it is right. If we lose accessibility, we will lose
the people.

Producing a Vineyard worship album - what's involved?
One of Vineyard
Music's primary
aims when it comes
to making albums
is to document the
worship that is
being expressed in
the churches at the
time. This
expression will have
a uniqueness made
up of musical style
(music through the
ages changes as
man seeks to
express his soul in
new ways) and God
inspired-lyrics
(songs released on worship albums often reflect what God is doing in the
hearts of His people). And, in this context, the songwriters from around the
UK whose songs are accepted for an album most closely reflect what people
were expressing through their worship at the time an album was produced.
Probably the most important aspect for any album is the quality of songs as
these are the elements that form the expression of the album. Therefore,
Vineyard Music's approach is to first identify well-crafted, original songs. We
usually receive up to 250 songs per album, every one of which is listened to
and judged according to lyrical and melodical strength and originality, and
theological accuracy.
Once a core of 15 or so of the
strongest songs has been
identified, the next task is to
recruit worship leaders and a
band. The band begin by
arranging each song (essentially
deciding on which musicians will
play when and working on the
expression of the song) and then
they spend time rehearsing the
songs and developing them.
The next stage is the recording of
the songs. On a live album this is
literally done over one, live event
where the whole band play
together as if in a live concert.
Each instrument is recorded onto
its own individual "track". A studio
recording, however, is done over a
much longer period of time in a
studio where each instrument is
recorded separately (hence the
expressions "live album" or "studio album").
Live albums tend to have a more raw and energetic feel to them which
comes from the audience participation whereas the latter will have a
smoother feel with less raw sonic qualities, thereby tending toward a more
mellow, meditative "feel". Vineyard Music (UK)'s two previous releases
("Come Now Is The Time" [Winds of Worship 12] and "Hungry") were both
"live albums" whereas "Surrender" is a studio album.
After recording, whether
in a live or a studio
setting, the songs are
then "mixed". Mixing is
where each
track/instrument is
mixed together and
"layered" so that the
song takes on form and
balance. In this sense,
the approach is similar
to that of an artist when
painting a picture.
Some parts of the
picture will need to have
predominant colors
such as blue to denote
sky, green to denote
meadow and yellow to denote beach, but within these basic colours there is
a multitude of finer detail which gives the picture life and uniqueness. In the
same way the mixing will bring detail and life to the songs by emphasizing
different instrumentation at different times.
Once mixed, the album
is mastered, which is
when all the sonic levels
are set (so that the
listener doesn't have to
keep adjusting the
volume on the stereo
between each song),
times of tracks are
embedded into the CD
and the right length
gaps are put between
the songs.
At this stage, the album
is ready for
manufacture.
That's it.... in a nutshell!
Meet the worship leaders
Brenton Brown - Producer and worship
leader
Brenton is currently the senior worship
leader at Cherwell Vineyard, Oxford and the
coordinator of worship in the Vineyard (UK)
worship. He is responsible for developing
worship and training worship leaders at the
Cherwell Vineyard and oversees worship in
the movement in the UK. This involves
leading worship at regional training and worship events, as well as leading
the national worship development team. He moved from Cape Town, South
Africa to England to study three years ago and now lives in Oxford.
Here Brenton writes about the "Surrender" album and its goals . . .
"For me the centre stage is our local church - whether it consists of 15 or
5000 people. That is where the real action takes place. In one sense, what
we're doing on a project like this is peripheral to what God is doing in the
movement around this country - the discipling, the passionate endurance and
commitment to His words and works and this is expressed in the earthy
worship that often takes place without the benefit of professional musicians.
What we're attempting to do here is simply to provide some tools and songs
that will help people continue to worship God intimately and passionately in
the context of their local church and in their devotional lives.
In another sense though, these songs are also the consequence of what God
has been doing in our lives through the spiritual families in which He has
placed us. These songs, leaders and musicians are the fruits of what God
has been doing in the churches that have been planted over the last 10 years
in the UK. And for that we are so grateful to God and to those who have
courageously risked so much to go out and plant and grow churches and
who have shown us what it means to "lay it all down" and surrender. We
hope that this album will be a useful tool and that through these new songs
we would come to know our Master and His unchanging love for us even
more deeply - a love that explains even the most costly surrender . . . "
Brenton leads worship on the following songs:
Hallelujah (Your love is amazing)
With You
You Are My King
Other worship songs by Brenton:
Lord Reign in Me - from "Come Now Is The Time" (Winds of Worship 12)
All Who Are Thirsty - from "Come Now Is the Time" (Winds of Worship 12)
Humble King - from "Hungry"
Refuge in You - from "Hungry"

Kathryn Scott - Producer and worship
leader
Kathryn and her husband, Alan, lead the
Causeway Coast Vineyard in N. Ireland. She
has a wonderfully sensitive approach to
worship leading which makes worship both
accessible and intimate. As well as being an
accomplished piano player and having a
superb singing voice, she is also a very gifted songwriter.
This is Kathryn's story of how she became involved in worship leading:
"I began singing and playing the piano at the early age of five. Coming from
a musical family, I started to write music when I was nine, and later realised
that the Lord was leading me to write worship material. In 1993 I went to
Bible College in Cheshire where I met Alan and three years later we moved
to Glasgow and became Assistant pastors in the S.W. Glasgow Vineyard. It
was there that I was first asked to lead worship, and oversee worship in the
church.
In the following month (July 1997), I met Brian Doerksen. Along with about
ten others in the UK, I was trained and taught by Brian over the next two
years.
During that time, he became a friend and a mentor who deeply impacted my
life.
He showed me the importance of intimacy, accessibility and integrity in
worship leading, and gave me many tools with which to craft my songs into
something that others could own and use for themselves before God. In turn,
I want to give away to others what I have learned so that worship is
strengthened within the church today."
Kathryn wrote the following songs on "Surrender":
Devotion
What a Child is Meant To Be
She also leads worship on the following songs:
Devotion
What a Child is Meant To Be
All That I Need
Other worship songs by Kathryn:
Hungry - from "Hungry"
Child of God - from "Hungry"
You Are a Holy God - from "Hungry"
Nigel Briggs - worship leader
Nigel and his wife, Helen, joined the Trent Vineyard with
their three sons when the church was founded four
years ago. Nigel, an accomplished guitarist with a
passion for worship, quickly began to lead worship in
the church. He now serves on the staff, helping to
oversee and run various ministries, in particular worship.
He has a flair for training others and developing their
worship leading abilities and sees this aspect of passing
on his gifts of major importance in developing worship in
the church. He earns his living as a guitar maker,
trading under the name "EnBe".
Nigel wrote the following song on "Surrender":
For Me
He also leads worship on the following songs:
For Me
When You Call My Name
All Who Are Thirsty
Sharon Heap - worship leader
Sharon leads worship at the Riverside
Vineyard in Twickenham where she has been
involved in worship for several years. Sharon
is also a member of the national worship
development team. She was one of the
worship leaders on the "Come now is the
time" (Winds of Worship 12) album. She is
married to Mike and they have two daughters.
Sharon leads worship on the following songs:
At All Times
We Will Be Together
Marc James - worship leader
Marc has been a musician for twelve years
and a Christian for five. He attends the St.
Albans Vineyard where he is very involved in
leading worship, particularly at the church's
"Burn 2000" alternative youth service. His
passion is to reach young people with the
gospel through music. He does this
primarily through the rock band "Dust" that he
established with two friends three years ago. "Dust" goes into schools, pubs
and venues up and down the country, as well as touring a bit in the Czech
republic and Germany. They have also made appearances on television from
time to time. Marc has a heart to encourage other musicians to take their
music and message outside of the walls of the church and go public!
Marc wrote and led worship on the title song "Surrender"

Care of Compact Discs
Contrary to early reports, compact discs (CDs) are very easily damaged if
treated carelessly. Such damage has a much greater effect on the digital
data of a CD-ROM than on the information of a music CD. A dirty or
damaged CD-ROM is quite likely to malfunction. With CD-ROM drives
becoming ever faster and more disc-sensitive, this is an increasing problem.
The surface of the disc can quickly gather dirt and is very easily scratched.
To protect the data from scratches, fingerprints, dust particles, and smears,
do not touch the readout side (unlabeled side) of the disc or place it face
down on a hard surface.
Should the CD become dirty, clean it with a soft cloth lightly moistened with
CD cleaning fluid or ethyl alcohol, working from the centre to the edge. Do
not use any type of solvent, such as benzene, lacquer thinner, anti-static
agents, or LP record cleaners as they may damage the surface.
Never leave the disc in a place subject to direct sunlight, high temperature, or
high humidity. Recommended storage conditions are:
Temperature: 10C to 50C (50F to 122F)
Humidity: 10% to 80%

HALLELUJAH (YOUR LOVE IS AMAZING)
Your love is amazing, steady and unchanging
Your love is a mountain, firm beneath my feet
Your love is a mystery, how you gently lift me
When I am surrounded, your love carries me
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, your love makes me sing
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, your love makes me sing
Your love is surprising, I can feel it rising
All the joy thats growing deep inside of me
Every time I see you,
All your goodness shines through
And I can feel this God song, rising up in me

SURRENDER
Im giving you my heart, and all that is within
I lay it all down for the sake of you my King
Im giving you my dreams,
Im laying down my rights
Im giving up my pride
For the promise of new life
And I surrender
All to you, all to you
Im singing you this song
Im waiting at the cross
And all the world holds dear, I count it all as loss
For the sake of knowing you
The glory of your name
To know the lasting joy
Even sharing in your pain

WHEN YOU CALL MY NAME
Theres a hunger in this wilderness
For your revelation
To hear the words of life that strengthen me
Come and show what youve prepared for me
Speak your confirmation
Show me how I fit into your plan
For when you call my name I can see again
Who you are and who Im meant to be
And as you beckon me I am free to see
Who you are and who Im sent to be
I am seeking true identity
In the light of your presence
I am longing to know how you see me
In the time that you have given me,
Release the strength to follow
And the grace to be who you say I am

WITH YOU
So pure, so right this love I feel inside
So good just to be with you
No shame to hide you put my fears to flight
I know that I am safe when Im with you
This is who Im meant to be
I know you have chosen me
I can never turn away from this truth
Let the storms rage on outside
Let the day fade into night
There is nothing else that I would rather do
Jesus, I was born to spend this life with You
(last time repeat:)
Jesus, I was born to spend this life with You
So warm inside, you open up so wide
You let me walk right in to you
No dark, just light your love so undisguised
I know where I belong when Im with you
