TOPIC
Science Education For Students With Special Education Needs - Slow Learners, Fast
Learners, Scientifically Gifted And Creative Learners

INTRODUCTION
India is a democratic country. Education plays an important role to provide opportunities
for the development of the nation. Our constitution has made provision for universal
education up to age of 14 years. All agree that education should reach to all children
irrespective of their caste, creed and religion. Everybody should get equal opportunity to
develop his personality. A large number of children fall in the category of exceptional
children. If we do not make provision for their education , their potentialities will remain
undeveloped resulting in great wastage of human resources. Therefore it is necessary to
make separate arrangement for the education of exceptional children . Special education
will give insight in to problems of exceptional children to parents , educators and
administrators. It will help in the process of adjustment to exceptional children in the
society.

Special education must meet both needs in its efforts to bring exceptional children to the
maximum of their developmental potential and to prepare them adequately for a
satisfactory life adjustment. These exceptional children if left unattended become great
liabilities to the nation . They should be provided education to develop their potentialities.

SLOW LEARNERS
The slow learners have the same pattern of development as their peers with higher I.Q. But
the rate and degree of development varies children with low I.Q. have characterises this
typical of average of I.Q. children who are younger than them. So they appear immature
when compared to their peers. They may not be able to do many things which their can do.
This may result in frustration in them lack of confidence and low self esteem may present
in them. While considering the intellectual characteristics of slow learners , they show a
tendancy to over simplify concepts, inability to generalise , short memory and attention
span, inclination to concentrate only on one aspect of learning situation and retarded
language development.

Suggestions For Teaching Slow Learners
I. Provide them with simple learning tasks. Those tasks which involve a number of
elements must be avoided.
II. A sense of self-esteem must be encouraged in them ,steps must be taken to develop
confidence in themselves.
III. A record of assignments that are being completed and progressing can be prepared.
IV. Overlearning of lessons can be technique in the teaching of slow learners . The
lessons previously learned must be revised.
V. Effort must be made not to place slow learners in situations which may lead to
frustration. Always try to give them tasks which they are capable of doing.

FAST LEARNERS

They are fast thinking , highly creative and imaginative with very high constructive
abilities . They rank high in academic achievements and cover a wide ground within a
limited period of time . They are mostly invariably good in all subjects . They have
outstanding leadership qualities and can work well under pressure . They have very
good cordial relationships . They make friends easily. Enrichment of instructional
programmed an abundant supply of books , laboratory equipment and illustrative
material for he may select the one needed according to this personal aims. School
work to give liberal background for later professional preparation.

GIFTED LEARNERS

Gifted is a frequent designation and a certain specific I.Q. range has been allotted to
those who are known as gifted people. The gifted and talented learners are those
who intellectual abilities are exceptionally and constantly outstanding. The gifted
children showed superiority in reading languages , arithmetical reasoning , science
and art. They were better in reasoning ability , generalisation and comprehension.
The interest of gifted children were many sided , they were interested in abstract
subjects. The gifted children are less inclined to boast or over state their knowledge.
They are most trust , worthy and sincere. There character preference and social
attitudes are more wholesome. They score more on test of emotionality.

CREATIVE LEARNERS

The creative learners shows strong conviction in this beliefs and values. He can go
beyond socially conformist behaviour . The creative child is a curious to know more
and more about his environment. The creative child can take independent
judgement in crucial matters. He is independent in thinking about the problems of
various types. When he starts a task , he completely absorbs himself in that task. He
concentrates all the mental energies on the task in hand. He develops intuition in
his problems. He does not easily accept the routine solutions of problems. He is not
a conformist. He has risk taking capacity. The creative child has vision of future
problems. He can anticipate the problems which may emerge in future.

CONCLUSION

Students with special education needs tend to show significantly lower
achievements in science than their peers. Reason for this include severe difficulties
with academic skills, behaviour problems and limited prior understanding of core
concepts background knowledge. Despite this bleak picture, much is known on how
to significantly improve science achievements for students with special needs.
Special education will give insight in to the problems of exceptional children to
parents, educators and administrators .It will help in the process of adjustment of
exceptional children in the society. The attitude of the society will be changed
towards these children.
