Today, we will read a selection entitled “Protect Forest
and Plants.” But before that, I want you to read the following questions
in the board. Upon reading the selection find the answers to this following question.

Protect Forest and Plants

The forest is one of the most important natural resources. We can get many things from it
such as building materials and materials for making pulp paper and wallboard. Rattan, gum,
firewood and medicines are also taken from the forest. Forests are home for animals, too. Some
forest trees give us food.
The roots of trees hold the soil together. They prevent the soil from having carried away
by water. The leaves of trees break the force of the rain so that the water drops slowly to the
ground. The dead leaves of trees on the forest floor cover the soil. When these leaves decay, they
absorb and soak up water and prevent its run off.
Trees in the forest break the force of the wind. Breaking the force of the wind lessened
soil erosion.
Lands that are not used for farming should be planted with cover crops. Cover crops
could be grasses, shrubs or trees. These cover crops give protection to the soil. They prevent the
soil from having carried away. The roots of small plants and grasses hold the soil into place.
Grasses also prevent soil from exposed to for much sun and wind.
Forest and plants prevent the occurrence of landslides and floods. Where there are trees
and plants, fewer floods are likely to happen.
