Title

Theoretical and practical aspects of Asset liability management in commercial banking: A case of
HSBC Bank.
Background of the Research
Asset Liability Management (ALM) is a critical function to the banks and financial institutions
in present environment due to volatile global market, proliferation of new financial products and
changing environment of regulatory system (Koch and MacDonald, 2009). It is a dynamic and
comprehensive framework that helps banks and financial institutions to measure, monitor and
manage the market risk (Consiglio, Cocco and Zenios, 2008). Under this system, structure of balance
sheet is managed in proper way to ensure that the net earnings from interest are maximized and
risks are minimized.
The ALM system has various functions to manage risks such as liquidity risk management, market
risk management, trading risk management, funding and capital planning, profit planning and
growth projection (Kosmidou and Zopounidis, 2004). It enables the banks to take business decisions
in a more informed framework through considering risks. It is an integrated approach that covers
both types of amounts financial assets and liabilities with the complexities of the financial market.
Justification of Research
In present scenario, ALM is important for the banking industry due to deregulation of interest
regime. It helps to assess the risks and manage the risks by taking appropriate actions. So, to
understand the ALM process and various strategies that are helpful for the banks to manage the
market risk, this topic is selected. Along with this, it would be beneficial for me to develop my
knowledge regarding the ALM process, functions and practical aspects through case study of HSBC
bank.

Debate the benefits and drawbacks of both market and
mixed economies
Posted on November 22, 2013 by Jennifer Williams
Debate the benefits and drawbacks of both market and mixed economies on the Discussion Board. Present questions for any
opponents arguments, looking for holes and inconsistencies. Attempt to answer any arguments made against your position.

Market & Mixed Economies
Mixed economy can be explained as the economy in which a variety of public and government are intervened. On the other hand
market economy can be defined as the economy, which is based on the division of labor. The price of goods and service in this
economy is determined with a free price system developed by the supply and demand interventions. It is entirely different from the
economy, in which prices of goods and services are determined by the government (Gorman, 2003). The income level of an
individual rises or decreases on the basis of their success instead of the based on community prosperity.
Benefits of Both Economies
Market Economy: Following are the benefits of market economy
All the activities are controlled by the individuals as they are free to make their decisions.
The income rise of individual also depends solely on the success of the individual.
Mixed Economy: Following are the benefits of mixed economy
Beneficial to increase national production.
Freedom for the business owners in profit earning activities.
Individual also experiences political freedom.
Increase in the choice of goods for the customers with proper government support and regulation (Lipsey & Chrystal, 2007).
Profitable for the industries due to subsidies by government and tax breaks.
Drawbacks of both Economies
Market Economy:
Higher rate of unemployment.
Lack of tax breaks.
Income completely depends on the success of individual, which is not good for the economy.
Mixed Economy:
Less utilization of natural resources.
Drawback of market and planned economy as it includes attribute of both economies.
The impact on community also affect individual (Gorman, 2003).
The above are the drawbacks and benefits of both market and mixed economy.

Data Collection Methods
Success of conducting research depends over the result that is gained by the researcher at
the end of the research. These attained results are affected by the used methods to conduct research. In this way, there are two type
of methods are available to collect the data to reach at the result of the research such as primary data collection and secondary
data collection method. These are as follow:
Primary Data Collection Method: All the data that are collected at first time are included under the primary data collection
method. Three approaches or methods are comprised under the primary data collection method such as observation method, in-
depth interview and survey through questionnaire (Scruggs and Mastropieri, 2006). Under the primary data collection method,
most of the researchers prefer to use direct communication with the respondents to reach at the result of the research. In
observation method, data are collected by the researcher through observing response or activities of the targets and personally going
in the field (Church, 2002).
Along with this, through conducting in-depth interview and gaining oral-verbal response of the respondents, data are collected by
the researcher. Under the interview, telephonic and personal both types of interview can be conducted by the researcher to gather
the data. Along with this, survey through questionnaire is also available to collect the data. In this, through forming questions,
responses of respondents are gained by the researcher (Jonker and Pennink, 2010).
Secondary Data Collection Method: Data that are collected on the basis of
previous data or research is included under the secondary data collection method. In this way, several types of approaches can be
used such as case study, documentation review, articles, projects, etc. In the case study approach of the secondary data collection
method, researcher collects the data from annual reports, analyzed information which is available on web-sites of the particular
organization (Phillips and Stawarski, 2008). For collecting information under secondary collection method, published and
unpublished sources are used by the researcher. Under the published source, report of the firm, government publications,
newspaper, journals, etc. are used to gather the information. Researchers findings, unpublished material, unpublished findings of
certain inquiry committees, etc. are used under the unpublished source to collect information (Axinn and Pearce, 2006).
Selection of Method
Selection of the method to collect data depends on the nature of the research problems and used research approach. Along with this,
researcher gives preferences to the method that is beneficial and easy to collected information. For example, if specific information
is needed to solve the research problem for particular organization related to its employees or internal part of management than
researcher prefers to use secondary data collection method. It becomes tough for the researcher to gather information through
conducting interview and survey through questionnaire because of consuming more time and money (Church, 2002).
At present, in the hectic schedule of employees and respondents, it is tough to communicate directly with the respondents. So, in the
presence of these conditions, secondary data collection method is used by the researcher. At the same time, if researcher wants to get
reliable and factual results than primary data collection method is preferred by the researcher. Along with, to solve the general
research issue, this type of data collection method is used by the researcher (Phillips and Stawarski, 2008).

Sample Research Proposal
This page provides a sample proposal to explain you how a research proposal is made.
Proposal Title
For this dissertation, the title selected is Role of Training & Development to overcome the problem of poor selection process: In
context of Toyota.
Introduction
Training and development is important to diagnosis poor performance in selection of personnel that is very essential for the
organization (Nelson 2011). It is because employee performance affects overall performance of the organization and training and
development enhance ability of the employees.
Research Question
What will be the problems that may arise by poor selection process?
How Training and Development can solve the problems of poor selection process?
Discuss the importance of training and development programs in organization.
Research Objectives
To explore the significance of selection procedure in organizational development
To determine the factors that facilitates poor selection
To explore the role of training and development in increasing employees performance
Literature review:
Auluck (2007) depicts that training and development programs are important part of the organization that improves skills of the
employees. Training and development programs are helpful to enhance skills of the employees that increase performance of an
individual as well as organization. Therefore, trainers and educators help to achieve required development objectives of the
organization (Auluck 2007). Similarly, training and development are used to find out and to solve the problems that may occur
through poor selection process.
On the other hand, Mangena & Chabeli (2005) opposed that training and development requires the trainees and educators that have
good skills and more knowledge to provide the employees. It is because; if they are not skilled or semi-skilled then they cannot
provide good knowledge to employee and employees cannot increase their performance to achieve the organizational goals and
objectives (Mangena & Chabeli 2005). All the trainees should be responsible to meet their training needs effectively and efficiently.
Importance/benefits of the study:
This research will provide a clear understanding about how problem of poor selection process can be overcome through training and
development within the organization. This research study will be effective to increase the focus of organizations over the training
and development facilities to increase the organizational effectiveness and to reduce selection expenses.
Research methodology:
The research will be qualitative in nature that will provide solutions of the research questions as the exploration of problem requires
quality information. Both primary and secondary data will be uses in this research paper to provide better solution through survey
and analysis of literature to obtain more relevant and accurate data.
Possible information sources:
The researcher will use many authentic sources to collect data that will helpful to complete this research such as books, journal
databases, articles etc.
Potential difficulties:
There may be some difficulties for the researcher, while conducting the research such as time limitation, accessibility of information
sources, cost etc.
