Research shows a
lack of technical
skills in industries
RESEARCHcarried out by
the University of South
Wales into the needs of
local industry in materials
and advanced engineering
sector has revealed a lack
of technical expertise.
The survey, carried out by
the A4Bfunded MAeKES pro-
ject, found that graduates
and other job seekers are not
able to fulfill company
requirements.
In Wales, the most frequent-
ly identified missing exper-
tise was electronics/hard-
ware engineering.
Other areas emphasised by
more than one company
included mechanical engi-
neers, laser systems, chemi-
cal engineers and materials
scientists.
The MAeKES project part-
nering with Cardiff and
Swansea universities aims to
build collaborations with
business and industry to sup-
port knowledge exchange
and promote the industriali-
sation of Welsh university
courses.
The research also gave
details of drivers of Welsh
firms to innovate through
collaborative projects.
When compared to the rest
of UK, Welsh businesses
were very much more con-
cerned with efficiencies and
cost saving whereas the rest
of the UKwas more focused
on competitiveness and being
a market leader.
Dr Martin Rhisiart of the
University of South Wales
said: Our study analysed
global drivers and potential
disruptions for work and
skills in the UK. We produced
four scenarios for 2030, with
work and skills implications
for seven economic sectors.
For manufacturing, while re-
shoring provides newoppor-
tunities for growth and
employment, the sector in
Wales and the UKneeds to
followa path of up-skilling.
This applies across occupa-
tional roles.
In addition to continued
investment in core engineer-
ing and technical skills,
advances in technologies and
business models such as
those linked to additive man-
ufacturing, digitalisation of
production and newmateri-
als call for newrepertoires
of skills. Companies in Wales
need to move up the innova-
tion ladder. Collaboration
and open innovation busi-
ness models can help manu-
facturing businesses to suc-
ceed in this emerging manu-
facturing landscape.
The Industrial Needs
Survey has provided an
insight into the contribution
academic institutions can
provide to business and
industry.
MAeKES will build proac-
tively and positively on the
knowledge gained fromthis
report to develop collabora-
tions and partnerships that
enable newtechnologies to
be commercialised and pro-
mote economic growth.
This research will be used
to informthe newNational
Research Networks ensuring
that research and develop-
ment in Wales is carried out
with a wider appreciation of
industrial requirements.

Report highlights skills gap in engineering in Wales
Building societys asset milestone
NEWPORT-BASED Monmouthshire Building
Society, one of Wales largest and most suc-
cessful financial institutions, has recently
achieved a major financial milestone 1bn in
assets.
This is a highly significant landmark within
the societys history, and is the culmination of
145 years of effort, dedication and achieve-
ment for all the societys staff, both past and
present.
To mark this momentous occasion, the socie-
ty will be giving back to the wider local com-
munity through some unique and exciting
funding projects.
For the first stage of the celebrations, it has
launched the Community Acorn Fund to give
back to community groups and projects
throughout the local geographical area.
A 25,000 funding pool has been allocated
across the societys branch and agency net-
work, and local community groups are invited
to apply for funding. The deadline for applica-
tions is September 30, 2014, and more infor-
mation is available at monbs.com/acornfund.
The second stage of the celebrations is the
Lasting Legacies project which covers areas
across a wide spectrum of society including
health, children, the environment, homeless-
ness and sport.
The society is working in close collaboration
with a number of local and national bodies to
fund projects of great, lasting need. Details of
the specific projects will be announced over
the coming months.
Chief executive Andrew Lewis said: We

Call to nurture
venture in Wales
EXCITINGnewstart-up com-
panies in the technology sec-
tor could become a major
source of prosperity and
high-quality jobs for Wales in
years ahead, according to the
ESTnet, the body represent-
ing electronics and software
technology firms in Wales.
Speaking at the launch of
the 2015 ESTnet Awards, the
organisations chairman, Ian
Menzies, said Wales needed
to encourage and support
new-start enterprises as
some could evolve into the
tech giants.
The awards, which last year
were won by Newport-based
IACLtd, Oakdale-based
General Dynamics and
Newbridge-based Axion
Manufacturing Services, rec-
ognise the achievements of
businesses across the elec-
tronics and software sectors
and, for the first time this
year, will include a special
award for start-up firms
which has been named in
honour of Cardiff-born ven-
ture capitalist, Sir Michael
Moritz, whose investments
helped many newdigital
businesses worldwide to
start up.
Mr Menzies said: There
are many exciting newWelsh
ventures emerging in this
field and we need to promote
and nurture the newculture
which is giving rise to this
wave of technology-based
enterprises. We also need to
become better at spotting the
potential industry stars and
encouraging themto grow
their businesses here in
Wales to create large num-
bers of high-quality profes-
sional jobs.
He added: Were very
pleased that an international
entrepreneur of the calibre
of Sir Michael has lent his
name to this award category,
which will give recognition
to one of Wales growing
number of fledgling technol-
ogy enterprises. His success
has been an inspiration to

Ian Menzies, chairman of the ESTnet, addresses the audience at the awards launch
many already and we hope it
will encourage many others.
Mr Menzies also urged firms
to work closely with education
in order to nurture the new
generation of workers needed
by the industry, adding that
employers should think imagi-
natively about howworkers in
other occupations might be
retrained for ICT roles.
With a shortage of skilled
technology workers across
Europe, Welsh firms could give
themselves a competitive edge
in international markets by
working to cultivate the neces-
sary skill base at home.
The ESTnet skills survey, con-
ducted in 2013, showed that 44
per cent of technology busi-
nesses in Wales expect to
recruit more engineers and
software professionals by the
end of 2016.
Mr Menzies said: We are in a
global market so there are lots
of opportunities, in particular
for Welsh software developers,
but also for the hordes of
young talent that we knowis
out there. The data we have
indicates the industry needs
about 3,000 newpeople a year
just to keep pace with current
demand.
Entries for the 2015 ESTnet
Awards must be submitted by
November 19, 2014. Winners
will be announced at a gala din-
ner at the Wales Millennium
Centre on 5 March, 2015.

Crackdown on
unsafe sites
Safety inspectors have
pledged robust action as
part of a crackdown on
poor standards and unsafe
working practices on
Britains building sites.
Amonth-long campaign
was launched by the
Health and Safety
Executive aimed at reduc-
ing the number of acci-
dents which lead to inju-
ries or deaths.
Philip White, HSEs
chief inspector of con-
struction, urged firms to
make sure conditions on
sites were safe, adding:
Industry has made much
progress in reducing the
number of people killed
and injured in its activi-
ties, but for every fatal
accident, approximately
100 construction workers
die froma work-related
cancer.
During the recent
health initiative, enforce-
ment action was taken on
one in six sites. Time and
again we find smaller con-
tractors working on refur-
bishment and repair work
failing to protect their
workers through a lack of
awareness and poor con-
trol of risks.
This isnt acceptable it
costs lives and we will take
strong and robust action
where we find poor prac-
tice and risky behaviour.

Our first job for the club, deliver-

New training centre for
animal care now open
ASPIRINGanimal care work-

more opportunity to train
and develop their skills fol-
lowing the launch of a new
animal care centre in
Caerphilly.
One of Wales largest training
providers, ACT Training, is the
only one which offers animal
care courses in South Wales.
The company already has an
animal care centre at their
Hadfield Road site in Cardiff
and the provision of animal
care services in Caerphilly
means that animal care learn-
ing routes are nowavailable to
learners in Caerphilly, RCT and
beyond.
The pet industry has grown
rapidly in recent years and
there are now24 million pets in
the UK.
As a result the animal indus-
try is said to be worth 1 billion
with more than 13,000 business-
es servicing the needs of pet
owners.
This has created more than
78,000 jobs and many more vol-
unteer opportunities.
Voluntary work is very impor-
tant within the sector and over
one-fifth of all animal care
employees began their careers
on a voluntary basis.
The newCaerphilly animal
care centre comprises of three
rooms: a reptile and amphibian
room, a mammal and bird room
and an invertebrate room.
Learners will be hands on
with all of the animals, with a
viewto pursuing a career with-
in the animal care industry in
diverse roles that include veteri-
nary nurse, police dog handler,
horse trainer, dog groomer,
farmer and many more.
BBCWales wildlife presenter
and ACT skills ambassador Dr
Rhys Jones officially opened the
newCaerphilly animal care
centre.
Learners heard first-hand
experiences fromthe evolution-
ary biologist and BBCWales
resident wildlife correspondent
and received tips on caring for
animals fromdomestic ham-
sters to wild snakes.
Dr Jones love for animals
grewwhen his mother kept 26
pets at their home.
Leaving school at 16, he was
awarded a grant at Cardiff
University to study physics,
chemistry and mathematics,
before completing a degree in
Zoology and Genetics.
Dr Jones then went on to
become a Master of Philosophy
in medical molecular entomolo-
gy and gained a PhDin molecu-
lar evolution, specialising in
herpetology and parasitology.
Dr Jones said: Its exciting to
see ACT expanding their animal
care provision in order to
inspire the next generation of
animal experts.
Wales is a country that is full

Sisters in
business
with new
venture
SISTERS Nadine and
Natasha Rosser, of
Cwmbran, have started
Foot and Flex, a podiatry
and sports massage busi-
ness, in Griffithstown.
They set up the venture,
at Heron House, Station
Road with support and
financial help from the
Centre for Business.
Nadine is a fully-qualified
podiatrist and Natasha is
fully-qualified and insured
in sports massage therapy.
She has worked in a variety
of clinical and sporting
environments including
with an elite rugby club in
South Wales.
The business will open on
October 1.
The sisters said: We set
Foot and Flex up as we are
both very passionate about
what we practice. We chose
to base our business in
Griffithstown as it is central
between Pontypool and
Cwmbran. The location is
consistent with image, the
clinic can be easily found,
central to other businesses,
and will save patients going
into a busy town centre.
It is hoped that in the
future the business will
expand to create a number
of jobs in the local area.

LATEST findings fromthe UK
Commissions Employer Skills
Survey have shown that while job
vacancies in Wales have increased by
14 per cent over the last two years, a
shortage in skills remains a key
issue for employers in Wales and
indeed, across the rest of the UK.
Apprenticeships are a cost-effective
solution for up-skilling and main-
taining workforce skills in any
industry, and in light of these contin-
ued shortages, are important for
ensuring that companies are devel-
oped in a way that suits their busi-
ness needs.

of next months SkillsCymru event,
which will take place at Cardiff s

23.
Supported by both the Welsh
Government and Careers Wales, the
event is set to provide an opportunity
to highlight the benefits of work-
based learning and apprenticeships -
not just to learners but also employ-
ers and schools
It will bring together a cross sec-
tion of organisations to demonstrate
the wide range of career choices, as
well as both academic and vocational
learning and training opportunities
open to people; and provide key
information on the skills potential
employers require for success.
The last event of this kind took
place in 2010 at the Millennium

tors and we will this year be attend-
ing alongside other exhibitors
including the Army, South Wales
Fire and Rescue Service, The
Princes Trust, NHS, The BBCWales,

Gastro pub is unveiled
by former County man
FORMER Newport County
apprentice Richard Hamer is
hoping for a good result from
his latest business venture in
South Wales.
The Newport haulage firmboss,
universally known by his nick-
name Rioch after the former
Aston Villa and Derby County
player Bruce, has opened a gastro
pub in his home town.
Richard has ploughed what he
says is a substantial amount of
money into transforming the for-
mer Rock and Fountain Pub and
Riverside Restaurant, at
Woodfieldside, Blackwood, into
Bistro 8.
Richard, who represented Wales
at junior level and played along-
side County greats John Aldridge
and Tommy Tynan, has taken out
a lease on the building.
He said: The name of the new
place is because of three coinci-
dences.
My daughter Lisa was born on
the eighth.
This is the eighth pub I have
opened and I played at number
eight for Wales at junior level in
my first appearance, which was
against Northern Ireland.
I live locally so Ive known the
pub all my life. In fact it was the
first pub that I had a drink in.
The pub, which had been closed
since last year, before Richard
took it on, nowhas a mixed Welsh
and Spanish theme restaurant as
the manager, Sami, and his wife,
Mari, the chef, are fromSpain.
Richard, who owns Richard
Hamer Transport, Newport, for-
merly owned seven pubs in the
south east of England and is now
returning to the trade after a 20
year gap.
The gastro pub is on two floors
with space for sixty diners on the
first floor and drinkers accommo-
dated on the ground floor, which
is furnished with Chesterfield set-
tees and comfortable chairs.
Anewinternal oak staircase
nowlinks the ground and first
floors, replacing the former exter-
nal metal steps up to what was
previously the Riverside
Restaurant.
Car parking for forty vehicles is
opposite the building on St
Davids Road.
Local man Haydn Thomas, of
letting agents Hutchings &
Thomas Chartered Surveyors,
said: The Rock and Fountain was
a prominent and highly regarded
pub for very many years.
Rioch has done a wonderful job
in renovating the place and trans-
forming it in to a modern, food-
lead gastro pub which is proving
an instant success with locals,
particularly at the weekend.
Dating back at least two hundred
years, the road and riverside res-
taurant nowoccupies the building
that was originally a toll house for
the bridge that crosses the neigh-
bouring Sirhowy River.

Solicitor takes on Sparkle trusteeship
GR-EIGHT INVESTMENT: Former County player Richard Rioch Hamer and Haydn Thomas, of Hutchings & Thomas
Chartered Surveyors, outside Bistro 8 in Blackwood
Caitlin Lewis of Cwmbran-
based QualitySolicitors Rubin
Lewis OBrien has just been
appointed trustee and director
of the charity Sparkle.
Sparkle started out with the
aimof building and equipping
the Serennu Childrens Centre
based in Newport, which
opened in April 2011 after a
joint initiative with Aneurin
Bevan University Health
Board.
Nowthat Serennu is open,
Sparkle continues to support
it, providing leisure and infor-
mation services for children
and young people and their
families with complex and spe-
cial needs.
Sparkle raises funds for a
wide range of additional
equipment and services, all
based at Serennu, and nowhas
more than 20 members of staff
who help with their efforts.
Ms Lewis, solicitor at
QualitySolicitors Rubin Lewis
OBrien, will be involved in the
running of Sparkle as a direc-
tor and trustee where she will
be involved in decision-making
in matters such as the growth
and development of the chari-
ty, leisure and educational
activities for the children and
young people, the development
of other family-centred servic-
es to accommodate the needs
of parents and siblings, fund-
raising events, management
and usage of finances. In addi-
tion to her usual trustee
duties, Ms Lewis will also deal
with ancillary legal matters as
they arise.
She said: I have a personal
interest in the charity. My
older brother is severely disa-
bled and therefore Imhon-
oured to be part of a charity
that has such an important
role in the lives of many disa-
bled children in the area.
I chose to join Sparkle when
I heard that the charity wanted
to have someone on the Board
of Trustees that dealt with
family lawand Child
Protection issues, the area in
which I practice.
Caitlin has previously volun-
teered for Barnardos and
Friends of Chernobyls
Children. She joins another
member of QualitySolicitors
Rubin Lewis OBrien, Sarah
Telford, on the board of trus-
tees.
Ms Telford is an Employment
and Litigation Solicitor who
has been involved with Sparkle
since March 2013 and in addi-
tion to her usual trustee duties
undertakes all the HRand
Employment Lawwork and
advice on behalf of the charity.
Talking
business
AT THEFSBwe are very keen to
understand what is going on within
our members businesses and the
issues that they face on a day-to-day
basis.
As part of that we carry out regular
surveys of our members to discover
things like howconfident they are,
whether profitability is improving
and whether they are taking on staff.
We recently published the latest
results of our survey work in our
Wales Voice of Small Business Index
for the third quarter of this year.
Perhaps the most interesting thing
to come out of the latest quarterly
survey was that our members in
Wales are more likely to be planning
capital spending than at any time
since the index began back at the
beginning of 2010.
Whether it is a Newport manufac-
turer investing in a newmachine, a
Caerphilly tradesman buying a new
van, or a Cwmbran cafe buying a
newcoffee machine, it is clear that
businesses here are nowbeginning
to make real investment for the
future.
That is a positive sign, and that
investment should feed through into
the order books of other businesses
that provide those machines and
vans, which should, in turn, help to
support further economic growth.
But despite the positive signs of
investment there are still many busi-
nesses in South East Wales that
remain cautious over the short-term
outlook.
While business confidence remains
positive in Wales it is still some way
behind the rest of the UK.
However, the fact that small compa-
nies are investing at all is especially
welcome when you consider that
raising finance remains a particular
challenge for businesses here in
Wales.
If we can find ways to improve
access to finance in Wales then who
is to say that businesses would not be
even more intent on investment in
the future.
