This unit describes the literary trend in America as it begins to set new standards in literature in the
contemporary period influenced by the grimness of World War II.
American poets in the early 20
th
century led in developing literary modernism, and at the opening of the
1900s, American literature stood divided among special interest groups.
As you discover the literary selections in this unit, your skills for reading literature will be enhanced as well as
your listening, speaking, and writing skills. Your knowledge in Anglo-American literature and other text types,
