Diagram 1.1 Diagram 2.

1

1. Diagrams 1.1 and 1.2 show interference patterns using coherent sources of waves, .
a) i) What is meant by coherent waves ?
( 1 mark
ii) Compare Diagrams 1.1 and 1.2
Relate and x to make a deduction regarding the relationship of both
quantities.
( 5 marks )

b) Two loudspeakers placed 1.5 m apart are connected to an audio signal generator adjusted to
a frequency 600 Hz. When a student walks at a distance of 3.0 m infront of the
loudspeakaers he hears four consecutive loud and 3 soft sounds
Explain why?
( 4 marks )

c) i) Explain why the wavefronts in the sea follow the shape of the coastline as the water
become shallower
( 4 marks ).
ii) You plan to build a safe port for the convenience of the fishermen.
Suggest relevant steps to be taken in order to build it.

Diagram 2.1
2. a) Diagram 2.1 (a) shows a filament bulb labeled 240 V. 80 W. Diagram 2.1

(b) shows
a graph of potential difference against current for two materials, Y and Z.
One of the materials will be chosen as filament in a bulb.
i) What is meant by 240 V, 80 W?
[1 mark]
ii) Based on the graph in Diagram2.1(b), compare the resistance of
materials Y and Z.
Choose the more suitable material to use as a filament of the bulb.
Explain your choice.
[4 marks]

b) As a researcher, your duty is to study the characteristics of a material to make
a heating element of a water heater. You are given four choices of heating
elements J, K, L and M. Table 1 shows the characteristics of the four heating
elements.

Metal
The cross sectional
area
Melting Point
Specific Heat
Capacity
Length
J Smaller Low High Long
K Larger High Low Short
L Smaller High Low Long
M Larger High Low Short

You are required to determine the most suitable heating element.Study the
specifications of all the four metals based on the following aspects.
- The cross sectional area
- Melting point
- Specific Heat Capacity
- Length of the heating element
