Welcome
Welcome to the University of Greenwich.
We hope that your time here will be
enjoyable, exciting and rewarding.
This booklet is divided into two main

you will need as a new student and will
help you to make the most out of your
studies at the University of Greenwich.
For an overview of everything you should
receive from us before arrival, and what
you should do, please visit the new

students/new.
We look forward to meeting you and wish
you all the best with your studies.

New students portal
When you get your official university
welcome letter you will be sent details of
how to access the new students portal,
along with your username and password.
You must have formally accepted your offer
of a university place for this to happen.
Part 1: Online Registration
As a new student, you must register with
the university to access its buildings and
facilities. Registration is in two parts:
Part 1: Online Registration and Part 2:
Registration Checks. Part 1 is discussed
below; for information on Part 2, see
page 12. For a step-by-step online guide to
registration, please visit www.gre.ac.uk/reg.
If you are a home or EU student, you
can complete Part 1 once the system
is open and you have received your
university username and password. You
will be sent these prior to registration.
International students, who require a
Tier 4 (General) visa to study with us,
should wait until they reach the UK
before completing Part 1.
You may undertake Part 1 from any
web-enabled computer. Details on
completing Part 1 will be e-mailed
to you or sent to you by letter if you
have not provided an e-mail address
(although no letters are sent abroad).
During this process, you must check,
confirm or amend the details on your
university record (these will include
your name, address, date of birth,
qualifications and chosen programme).
You can only complete Part 1 if you have
made arrangement for payment of your
tuition fees. For further information, see
below. You can also upload a photo of
yourself for your student ID card, although
this may be done during Part 2. For more
on student ID cards, see page 14.
To see when you can start registration
and to ensure you are registered by our
deadline, please visit www.gre.ac.uk/reg.
On the summary of Part 1: Online
Registration, you will find further details
on how to complete Part 2 including
documents you must bring with you.
Part 2 is completed on campus.
Paying tuition fees
The amount of tuition fees you pay will
depend on various factors, such as
the programme you are studying, your
mode of study (full-time or part-time, for
example), your year of entry and where
your study is based. To check tuition
fees for your year of entry and for
details on student finance, financial
support and fee payments, please visit
www.gre.ac.uk/students/finance.
If you pay your tuition fees for the year
in full at registration, a 5% discount
is available. This applies only to the
actual amount of fees paid and only to
payments received by the university by
30 September for September starters
ACTION!
Once your username and password have arrived,
log on to the new students portal.

Home and EU students complete Part 1: Online
Registration before arriving; international
students do this after arriving in the UK.

and 31 January for January starters. This
discount does not apply to payments
made, for example, by tuition fee loans or
to any other fees paid.
You can pay your tuition fees in two
instalments. At least 50% of the full
year fee, after any discounts, deposits
and registration fees are applied, must
be paid at registration. For September
starters, the second payment for the
balance will be due before the last Friday
in January; January starters will be
expected to make the second payment
before the end of May.
For full details on how to make fee
payments to the university, please visit
www.gre.ac.uk/study/finance.
Home and EU students
If you are a home or EU student, you
may be eligible for a Tuition Fee Loan
to pay your fees. You should apply to
Student Finance England if you are a
student domiciled
1
in England, or Student
Finance Wales, Student Finance Northern
Ireland, or the Student Awards Agency
for Scotland if you live in those nations.
Please apply to the Student Finance
Services European Team if you have come
to the UK to study.
For more information on the Student
Finance Services European Team,
call +44 (0)141 243 3570. There is
also more information available on
different types of funding from
www.gov.uk/student-finance.
If you have not received your student
finance support notification by the time
you need to register, dont worry. You will
normally be able to register and be given
time for your student support provider
to decide on your fees eligibility. Further
instructions on what you are expected
to do next will be given during online
registration.
Once your application has been
processed, you will be informed whether
or not a tuition fee loan has been granted
(the university will be notified at the same
time). If you have to make a contribution
towards fees, you are expected to pay
this at the time of registration, in line
with arrangements described at
www.gre.ac.uk/students/finance.
If you are a home student and are
intending to apply for a Tuition Fee
Loan and/or assistance towards living
costs, you should do so at once.
For more information on eligibility
and how to apply, please visit
www.gov.uk/student-finance.
Information is also available here for
students domiciled
1
in Northern Ireland,
Scotland or Wales, as well as on eligibility
for loans and grants towards living costs.
ACTION!
Home and EU students: apply for your student loan.
1
For more information on residency requirements and to whom you should apply for support, please visit
www.gov.uk/student-finance.
6
If you are an EU student, you may be
eligible for Tuition Fee Loan support only.
For further information and an application
form, please telephone the Student
Finance Services European Team or visit
www.gov.uk/student-finance. More
information is available here for those
students who may also be eligible for
help with loans and grants towards
living costs.
Additional nancial support
The university offers a range of bursaries
and scholarships designed to help
students with programme-related costs
in addition to the support available
through Student Finance England. To
find out whether you may be eligible for
these awards, please visit our Money
Doctors page at www.gre.ac.uk/
students/moneydoctors/checkup and
complete the bursaries check-up survey.
In addition, if you find yourself in
unexpected financial crisis, you may
be eligible to apply to the Access to
Learning Fund. To find out more, please
visit www.gre.ac.uk/current-students/
learningfund.
International and self-paying
students
During Part 1: Online Registration, you
will be given a summary of the tuition
fees payable. This will be based on your
programme of study and, if part-time, the
intensity of study less any discounts that
may be applicable. In order to complete
registration, you will need to pay all or
part of your tuition fees. You can pay
online using your credit/debit card or,
alternatively, you can pay by bank transfer
direct to the universitys account.
If you are transferring funds to pay for
tuition fees, you need to send them to:

The transfer must include the name of the
applicant on whose behalf the payment is
made, the applicants student ID number
(shown on the offer letter) and the
applicants date of birth.
You may have to pay a transfer charge.
You should add this to the transfer value
to ensure the university receives the
correct amount.
Please note: we do not accept cash.
Sponsorship by employers/
government
If an employer/government is sponsoring
you, please send a letter or fax of
confirmation directly to the address on
page 7. This is essential, as you will not be
registered until acceptable arrangements
for payment have been made. Please note
that students are responsible for any fee
payment not made by the sponsor. Letters
of sponsorship from individuals (e.g. parents,
relatives and friends) are not acceptable.

If you require a visa to study in the UK, you
are expected to be able to fund the whole
of your programme of study yourself, unless
you have an official sponsor. An official
sponsor is Her Majestys Government,
your home government, the British
Council, an international organisation, an
international company or a university. The
university reserves the right to decide which
international organisations or companies it
will accept for financial sponsorship.

Fees assessment
Please contact the Enquiry Unit on
020 8331 9000 before you accept your
offer if you believe your fee status has
been incorrectly assessed.
Remember that if you are a home or EU
student for fee-paying purposes and are
about to study for a qualification that is
at a level that is equivalent to or lower
than a qualification you already hold,
you are unlikely to qualify for student
support. We recommend that you
contact your student support provider for
further information. If you fall within this
category, you will normally have been
advised by our Admissions Office of the
rate of fee charge. For further information
on this, visit www.gre.ac.uk/students/
finance/ug and click on Equivalent or
Lower Qualifications.
Accommodation
If you are a September starter and have
applied for a place in a hall of residence
and have met the conditions of the
accommodation guarantee, you will
be e-mailed a formal offer of university
accommodation as soon as possible.
Included in this offer will be fee and
payment information, a list of what is
provided and what to bring, and other
information on living in a hall of residence.
There are a limited number of places
available in halls of residence for
students starting their programmes in
January. If you are a January starter,
you are advised to state this on your
application form. You should also
contact the Accommodation Office at
your campus of study from late October
onwards to enquire about potential
availability of hall places in January.
Section 1 Getting ready and setting off
ACTION!
All students seeking accommodation in halls of
residence must complete an online application form.
For more information, please refer to the new
students checklist at www.gre.ac.uk/students/
new and the new students portal.
ACTION!
If you are sent a fee assessment form, please
make sure you return it as quickly as possible.
If you are going through Clearing, you
should receive either a formal offer of
university accommodation or a letter
advising you of housing alternatives
(private-sector accommodation, the
waiting list for hall places, etc.) at the end
of August or beginning of September.
You must confirm your acceptance of
the accommodation offered and pay a
deposit of 400 by the deadline date
stated in the offer letter. Places in halls
of residence are in high demand; if
you have not successfully completed
your application, confirmed your
acceptance and paid the required
deposit on time, you are likely to find
that we cannot accommodate you. If
you have any questions, please contact
Accommodation Services. For details,
see page 23. Further information is
also available on our website at
www.gre.ac.uk/accommodation.
Moving in
(September starters only)
Students with places in halls of residence
are advised to move in between 10am
and 5pm on Saturday 14 or Sunday 15
September 2013, although students are
normally allowed to arrive after these
dates. Further information about moving
in will be sent to all students who have
confirmed places in halls.
It is sometimes possible for students
with special circumstances to move in
early, during the week of 9 September.
We cannot guarantee that a room will be
available for early arrival, as places are
very limited. If you need to move in before
the standard arrival weekend of 14 and
15 September, you must make a written
request via e-mail to Accommodation
Services. You must ensure that you
receive written confirmation from the
university that a room will be available
before making travel plans or other
arrangements. Additionally, if the
university is able to grant your request,
it is likely to affect which room you are
given, as only a limited number of rooms
are available for early arrivals. There will
be a charge for the extra nights.
Places to stay
Should a family member or friend
accompany you and wish to stay
overnight in Greenwich or Avery Hill, you
can find a list of hotels on the Greenwich
Council website, www.greenwich.gov.uk.
Alternatively, you can telephone
Greenwich Tourist Information Centre
on +44 (0)870 608 2000.
For guidance on where to stay in
Medway, please visit the Medway
Council website, www.medway.gov.uk,
or telephone Medway Visitor Information
Centre on +44 (0)1634 843666.
Your start of term
It is important that you attend all
timetabled sessions from the first day
onwards. You can find more information
about your school, programme and first
weeks activities on your schools pages
on the new students portal. You may be
given reading lists or tasks to complete
before you arrive. If you have any

activities
The University of Greenwich offers a
warm welcome to all new students,
and there will be various activities and
information available to help you settle in.

will give you some idea of what you can
expect. The activities in the First Week

personal and other tutors and fellow
students. Ensure that you have
contact information for your tutors
and programme leader, if this is a
different person.

Finding a doctor
You should register with a doctor as
soon as possible registering when you
are healthy is much less exhausting than
registering when you are feeling unwell.
If you are not living near a campus, you
should register with a medical practice
near your term address. If you are living
on or near a campus, you should register
with a local practice.
For a short list of health practices, see
contact information, beginning page 22.
For a longer list, visit www.gre.ac.uk/
students/support. Students at the Avery
Hill Campus may alternatively register
with the on-campus medical practice.
Important: it is free to register with
a doctor and get an appointment.
You cannot receive health care at a
practice unless you are registered.
If you do not live in an area covered
by one of the suggested medical
practices, visit the NHS Direct website
at www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk. Alternatively,
telephone NHS Direct on 0845 4647
with the postcode of your residence, and
you will be given details of three medical
centres local to you.
Your student ID card
To access services such as your library and
computing accounts, you will need to have
a student ID card. You will be provided with
a temporary card at the point of completing
registration. Your permanent ID card
will be sent to you by post. International
students who do not yet have a permanent
UK address will collect their ID cards
from the Student Centre. You will not be
able to access services until you are fully
registered.
An NUS Extra card is also available from
the National Union of Students. This works
in conjunction with your student ID card
to provide over 800 student discounts
on goods and services, including
travel, meals, fitness clubs and visitor
attractions. This card also incorporates
the International Student Identity Card, the
international form of student ID. This gives
students access to over 35,000 discounts
in 116 countries worldwide. You can buy
an NUS Extra card at the Freshers Fairs,
or online.
For more information on the Students
Union, please see page 19. For more
information on the NUS, please visit
www.nus.org.uk.
Using libraries and labs
Information Services operates the library
and student computing facilities on
each of the campuses. The facilities are
available for more than 100 hours per
week during term-time, including late
opening. Opening hours are more limited
during vacation periods.
The university provides a wide range of
electronic information, much of which
can be accessed off campus, as well as
some 600,000 volumes and more than
1,000 PCs. The libraries also run an inter-
campus loan service, so you can order a
book or journal from another campus.
Information Services also provides
laptop drop-in zones, netbook loans,
photocopying and printing facilities, and
self-service machines for the issue and
return of books. Staff in both the computer
labs and libraries do all they can to assist
users. To access these services, you will
need your student ID card.

and labs, visit www.gre.ac.uk/library.
Working online
The universitys student portal will provide
you with a single point of access to a
range of personalised online information
about your programme and services
offered by the university, as well as
news about current and special events,
announcements and online courses. You
can also find information about study
skills and details of university policies and
regulations such as the Student Charter
and Equal Opportunities Policy.
To access the portal, you must have your
username and password, which will be
sent to you prior to registration. Please
enter these at http://portal.gre.ac.uk.
There is a user guide to the portal at
www.gre.ac.uk/portal/help. Library
and lab staff can also provide help and
advice on the portal if you need it.
Most University of Greenwich
programmes with online material use a
learning system called Moodle. This
gives you access to:
Lecture notes including video and
audio material
Presentations and simulations
Surveys and quizzes
Coursework and learning tasks
Online submission and feedback
Social learning areas such as
discussion boards.
You can also use your mobile to connect
to the universitys wireless network at all
campuses. More information, including
maps showing the wireless zones, can be
found at www.gre.ac.uk/ils/wifi.

Disability and dyslexia
If you have a disability and you
have not declared it on your UCAS
application, please inform the
university immediately we cannot
provide assistance if we are unaware of
your requirements.
If you have a disability, such as a
long-term medical condition, mental
health difficulty or specific learning
difficulty, e.g. dyslexia, you may
be eligible for Disabled Students
Allowances. Assessments of need for
these can be carried out at the
university in the Maritime Assessment
Centre (e-mail mac@gre.ac.uk or
telephone 020 8331 9212).
If you have received our disability
and dyslexia questionnaire, please
complete and return it before
registering.
TIPS FOR MAKING THE MOST OF YOUR FIRST FEW WEEKS
Do participate fully in your First Week activities.
This will help you get to know staff and other
students, and to settle in as quickly as possible.
Ask questions wherever you go.
Meet your personal tutor, and ensure you have
their contact details and those of your programme
leader, if a different person.
Make sure you know how many courses you need
to take and what the assignments are.
Find out how to hand in coursework and hand it
in on time university deadlines are nal. Pay
attention to the feedback that you receive as it will
help you to improve.
Keep referring to your handbooks and information
on the portal they contain important advice.
Take notes at lectures, and reect afterwards on
what was said.
Actively participate in seminars, tutorials
and workshops. These will enhance your
understanding and help you to get to know other
students.
Find out the bibliographical referencing system
you need to use. Put in the effort to get to know it
now you will be glad you did later.
Use reading lists and add to them. Find a
recommended book and look at other books
shelved close to it as they may also be relevant to
your programme.
Check your university e-mails daily. If you are a
partner or associate college student, you may nd
it helpful to set up a divert of your e-mails into
one account.
Find out where to go for the universitys support
services.
Find out about workshops, including study skills
workshops, and ask for help if you need it.
Regularly check the Students Union website,
www.suug.co.uk, for upcoming social activities.
If you are based at the Medway Campus, a new
partnership, Greenwich and Kent Students
Unions Together, launches in August 2013, with a
new website at www.gktogether.co.uk.
Attend the Freshers Fair. Find out more about
clubs and sports societies that interest you. If
in doubt, sign up you can always change your
mind later.
These tips will help you to become an independent
learner and make your time at university more
enjoyable. If you need further information, talk to
your personal tutor or to someone in your Student
Centre or the Students Union.

Part-time working
A part-time job can benefit you financially
and help you to develop vital skills that
you will need upon graduation.
The JobShop, part of the Guidance
& Employability Team (GET), can help
students and recent graduates to find
part-time and vacation work and help
local employers to find staff. Jobs
and placements are advertised on the
JobShop web pages through the GET
Online service and in the JobShop
offices on each campus.
GET can also help with your long-term
career plans. It can provide careers
information and advice at all stages
of your studies, even after graduation.
Advisers are available on all campuses.
For more information about GET,
including contact details for JobShop
staff, opening hours and drop-in times,
visit www.gre.ac.uk/get.
Travel
The university encourages the use of
sustainable travel, i.e. public transport,
car sharing, cycling and walking. For
individual campus information, please
visit www.gre.ac.uk/travel.
University bus service
The university bus service is open to
all students. You must purchase a
ticket in advance to use the Medway

may be required. Departure points
are indicated on the campus maps on
pages 2427. For timetables, pricing
and where to buy tickets, please visit
www.gre.ac.uk/travel/bus.
If you have a disability that affects your
mobility, you should notify the Office of
Student Affairs so arrangements can be
made.
Parking
If you need to drive, parking is available
on or near all of our campuses. Please
note there are different arrangements at
each campus.
Avery Hill Campus
The car parks at Avery Hill Campus
are pay-and-display. You must
purchase a ticket from a machine
and display it in your vehicle, or pay
by phone. If you live in one of the
halls of residence on campus you
can obtain a student resident parking
permit. For details, please visit
www.gre.ac.uk/current/parking.
Greenwich Campus
Students cannot park at Greenwich
Campus but there is a public car park
opposite in Park Row, as well as other
car parks in the town centre. There are
also no parking facilities at our Greenwich
halls of residence. For information on
parking in Greenwich, please visit the
Greenwich Council website at
www.greenwich.gov.uk.
Medway Campus
To park on site, including at the halls of
residence, you will need either a season
ticket or a pay-on-the-day permit.
Pay-on-the-day permits are free but
you are required to buy a pay-and-
display ticket from one of the on-site
ticket machines. Details can be found at
www.gre.ac.uk/current/parking.

Blue Badge holders
Disabled parking bays are provided at
each campus. If you have a Blue Badge
you can obtain a free permit to park at any
of our campuses. Please note however
that without this permit you will need to
pay to park.
Student bodies
Union membership is free and automatic
on registering at the university unless
you opt out. Students at the university
are represented by the Students Union
University of Greenwich (SUUG);
students at Medway Campus are
represented by both SUUG and a new
partnership, Greenwich and Kent
Students Unions Together (GK
Unions).
SUUG represents students views at
all levels of the university and provides
advice services as well as a range
of social activities for its members. It
also runs student events and facilities,
including cafs and bars, and organises
sports clubs and societies focusing on
students programmes, interests and
culture. A recent SUUG initiative, Give
it a Go, will enable you to try something
completely different while meeting new
friends and gaining new skills.
Activities at the start of term will help you
to settle in and make new friends. These
include the Freshers Fair, which is a great
place to meet fellow students and sign up
for clubs and societies. Later in the year,
you can enjoy comedy and quiz nights,
student-led theme events, celebrity
appearances, and Flirt!, the UKs number
one student night.
The Summer Ball is the traditional end-
of-year party, a chance to dress up and
dance the night away in a grand location.
Union societies also organise specific
activities for their members (and other
students) in union bars and other local
venues, and sports clubs hold an awards
evening in the second term to celebrate
their sporting achievements.
For more information on SUUG, visit
www.suug.co.uk.
GK Unions is a new partnership between
SUUG and Kent Union delivering services
and activities for students based at
Medway Campus. GK Unions will support
numerous sports clubs and societies at
Medway as well as Coopers bar and the
Advice Centre. A new website,
www.gktogether.co.uk, is scheduled for
launch in August.

undergraduate or postgraduate student,
or a direct entrant new to Level 5 or 6.
This statement will help you know what
to expect, and what the university sees
as important to enable you to settle into
university life and study successfully.
You can see the policy and full statement
of entitlement at www.gre.ac.uk/about/
policy (under the Academic tab). The
