INTRODUCTION THE EUROPA SERIES: SECURITY FEATURES
THE FIRST SERIES THE EUROPA SERIES
The new face of the euro The back of the new 10
Europa, a gure from Greek mythology, is the new face of the euro.
Her portrait appears in the hologram and the watermark of the second
series of euro banknotes, which is called the Europa series. This incorporates
advances in banknote technology and is even more secure than the rst
series. The new banknotes are to be introduced gradually over several years,
in ascending order, starting with the 5 banknote in 2013 and the 10 as of
23 September 2014. The rst series will remain legal tender and circulate
alongside the Europa series until further notice.
To know more about the euro banknotes and coins, please contact
your national central bank or the European Central Bank.
There are security features on the back as well as on the front of the banknote.
Please see the red boxes below.
Boxes 4 and 5 show microprint. Under a magnifying glass, these tiny letters are
sharp, not blurred.
Box 6 shows the portrait watermark. It can be seen on both sides of the note.
In terms of design, the back depicts the same bridge an example of
Romanesque architecture as on the rst series.
