Task 1 Lead-in

Review some country names by looking at pictures, flags or objects from countries
around the world (or slide 1 of the PowerPoint) and inviting the students to tell you
where they are from.

Task 2 Quiz

1. Ask students to write the numbers 1-20 in their books. Explain that they are
going to hear 20 quiz questions. All the answers are names of countries.

2. They should listen to the quiz and try to write down the correct countries. Play
recording 1 or read out the clues on p.4 below.

3. Get the students into small groups and invite them to compare their answers.

4. Give a copy of the quiz questions to each group and have them read the clues,
discussing and amending any answers.

5. Students then listen to the answers (recording 2) and see which team got the
most correct.

6. So students can check their spelling, and see where the countries are on a world
map, you could display slide 3 of the PowerPoint.

Task 3 Which countries have you visited?

1. Keep the students in their small groups.

2. Put up the following prompts on the board or display slide 4 of the PowerPoint:

Ive visited

Ive seen many times / a few times / once / twice
I havent been to
Ive never been to

3. Add the question Which countries have you visited? and clarify that it means in
your life until now.

4. Now get them to discuss this question.

5. Students listen to recording 3 and write down the countries that the speaker has
visited.

6. They could listen a second time with a copy of the transcript to check answers
and spelling.

7. Draw students attention to the weak form of been, /bn/. The word is normally
pronounced this way unless it appears at the end of the sentence or is stressed
for particular emphasis.

Task 4 Find someone who

1. Give students a couple of minutes to check vocabulary and to add their own ideas
at the bottom of the sheet.

2. The students should then mingle and find a person who has been to one of the
places listed, by asking them Have you been to ?

Task 5 Been or gone?

1. Illustrate the difference between been and gone by inviting an imaginary student
to leave the room on an errand:

a. Show students a photo and tell them, This is Joe. He is a student here.

b. Pretend you are talking to Joe and say, Joe, could you take this to the
office, please?

c. Put the photo outside the classroom and say to the class, Joe has just gone
to the office.

d. Bring the photo back and say, Joe has just been to the office.

2. Check comprehension using questions like:

Sally has gone to Spain. Is she in England now? (No.)
Sally has gone to Spain. Is she in Spain now? (Yes.)
Pete has been to the doctors. Is he at home now? (Yes.)

3. Students complete the worksheet with been or gone.

4. They can then listen to recording 4 and/or look at slide 5 of the PowerPoint to
check their answers.
