ens adorable C1.

with the inevitable effect of sof-
tening the used valuations.
If youre looking for a low mile-
age city scoot, you cant do a
whole lot better than the C1.
The C1 debuted at the 2005 Ge-
neva Motor Show alongside two
other suspiciously similar look-
ing creations. Peugeots 107 and
Toyotas Aygo.
Those in the know will realise
that all three share a common
platform, the companies spread-
ing the cost of development be-
tween them.
Of the three cars, the Aygo fea-
tured the most distinctive styling,
whereas the Citroen targeted the
budget consumer.
The Peugeot appeared to be left
to pick up the pieces.
Parking at the supermarket for
the weekly mission isnt going to
present too many difficulties.
At just 1.6m wide, the C1 will
easily be able to take advantage
of those awkward spaces next to
the concrete columns that are so
often rejected.
Whats more, at just 3.4m long,
youll probably be able to access
the tailgate while still tucked safe-
ly into your bay, away from errant
trolleys and distracted drivers.

Q50 Ininiti adds a touch of class
THE Q50 has been around since
last year and its a fine looking
beast in a corner of the market
thats crowded with sober, been-
there-done-that saloons from
Germany.
Until now, though, there have
only been two power options
diesel or the flagship petrol-
electric hybrid so Infiniti has
added a 2.0-litre turbocharged
petrol engine thats more refined
than the diesel and cheaper than
the hybrid.
Its lower fuel economy and
higher emissions mean at its
not aimed at company car us-
ers. This is the model that will
be bought by private buyers who
like a touch of class.
Its a pretty thing, the Q50, as
long as its specified with large
enough wheels like this Sport
model is.
Headlights inspired by birds of
prey, swooping lines and curva-
ceous shapes are collectively like
a splash of cold water to the face
next to downright dull alterna-
tives.
A500-litre boot is more than big
enough for the daily grind, week-
ends away or case-laden trips to
the airport. The available stack-
ing height is limited, but the lug-
gage cavern stretches way into
the car before it meets the rear
seat backs.
There are a number of storage
solutions in the cabin, with a big
glove box and a central storage
bin that can swallow loads of
small bits and pieces.
Four adults will all find plenty
of space in the Q50, ad placing
three children across the rear
bench seat leaves enough shoul-
der room for everyone.
The interior quality is really
impressive, and it both looks
and feels a lot more European
than, say, a Lexus GS does. There
might be no finer cabin in the
class. The only caveat is that all
three display screens are too eas-
ily rendered useless by the sun.
For now, Infinitis main cus-
tomers are those who are active-
ly seeking something different
to the norm, or to what theyre
used to. Older drivers looking for
reliability, exceptional customer
service, luxury features and re-
finement will find very little to
dislike.
This car summed up in a single
word: surprising.

air? We all would, and Peugeot
is almost ready to turn it from
science-fiction to science-fact.
The firm is ready to actu-
ally demonstrate its Hybrid
Air technology, where a 208
supermini runs partly on pet-
rol and partly on compressed
air, resulting in astonishing
fuel economy figures topping
140mpg.
A compressed air tank be-
neath the boot stores energy,
while clever engine manage-
ment swaps between petrol
and air to achieve maximum
efficiency. At times, particu-
larly in urban environments,
the engine can run on air
alone. At these times there are
no CO2 emissions and no fuel
is consumed.
The driver can also select
a driving mode that forces
the car to use air as much as
possible. The compressed air
tank can be recharged in as
little as ten seconds either
through deceleration or direct
pumping from the engine.
The complex nature of the
drivetrain means that its
only available in automatic
guise, but Peugeot says thats
better for efficiency anyway.
A weight-cutting spree
including using expensive
composite materials wher-
ever possible has reduced the
prototype 208s weight to just
860kg. The weight reduction
makes heavy systems like
power steering superfluous,
helping to cut even more bulk
from the finished product.
The Paris Motor Show runs
from October 4 to 19.

Lengthy Mini model style no stretch
AT THE risk of stating the obvi-
ous, the main focus here is the ad-
dition of two extra doors. Grant-
ed, the Countryman might also be
a genuine five-door car, but Minis
take on this apparent duplication
is that the Countryman is an SUV,
albeit a small one, making it an
unfair comparison.
So, what we have here is a slight-
ly longer Mini hatch all the bet-
ter to accommodate rear seat oc-
cupants boasting more cabin
and boot space, plus the added
flexibility to attract families and
active types seeking a more prac-
tical Mini hatch.
Youll have to look closely to re-
ally spot the changes in the tran-
sition from three to five doors.
The extra length is modest (72mm
between the wheels) and it does
little to harm the look of this
third-gen cars already expanded
dimensions. The cars rear doors
arent the largest and access
could be more accommodating,
but once inside theres reason-
able legroom even for adults.
The cars boot also receives a
welcome boost.
Despite the expanded dimen-
sions of the five-door car, it re-
mains loyal to the fun ethos of the
three-door model. On the move
the extra length and weight bare-
ly registers, which means you can
still throwthe car around if so in-
clined. At launch, the choice be-
tween Cooper S petrol and Cooper
SD diesel means the difference
between a feisty, rev-happy expe-
rience and a more relaxed but no
less potent one respectively.
Both 2.0-litre four-cylinder
units, they can also be had with
BMWs six-speed dual clutch
transmissions if you dont fancy
the extra workout associated
with the manual shifters. Factor
in a switchable eco-normal-sport
mode plus optional electronic
sports damping and you dont
need to sacrifice a thing in the
pursuit of a performance Mini
driving experience despite the
cars increased focus on practi-
cality.
The Mini is an unusual proposi-
tion in that its often hard to make
direct comparisons with so say ri-
val cars. In basic trimthe car ben-
efits from a few options, although
these can prove surprisingly good
value. Likewise engine choice,
as BMWs efforts to reduce con-
sumption and emissions have
resulted in some seriously tax-
friendly numbers. Plus, spec your
car well and you wont lose your
shirt when its time to sell it on.
