LineGuard 2100

Electronic Linebreak
Detection System
Operating Principle
2
Description
The Lineguard 2100 samples pressure and calculates
a Rate of Pressure Drop (ROD) from the pressure sam-
ples. The LineGuard 2100 samples readings taken every
5 seconds and calculates an average pressure. The num-
ber of pressure samples, or averaging rate, contained in
the moving pressure average can be congured from 1 to
12 readings and denes the window used to lter instan-
taneous variations of the analog readings.
The Lineguard continuously monitors pipeline pressure
and detects static pressure conditions and ROD condi-
tions. These congurable conditions are classied as
Major and Minor event conditions. The Lineguard
keeps a log of pressure and ROD at regular congurable
intervals when these events are detected. It also initiates
valve closure if the Major event persists for a pre-deter-
mined length of time, exceeding an Event Duration set
point. The valve closure may be selectively disabled,
depending on the source of the major event. A date and
time stamped Event and Alarm log is also kept in
memory.
Minor Event A Minor Event is active when the pres-
sure being measured exceeds the H press set point or
the L press set point congured in the control, or when
the Rate of Pressure Drop being calculated exceeds the
H ROD set point congured in the control.
Major Event A Major Event is active when the pres-
sure being measured exceeds the HH press set point or
the LL press set point congured in the control, or when
the Rate of Pressure Drop being calculated exceeds the
HH ROD set point congured in the control.
Valve closure after a major event requires a system
reset to re-open the line valve and resume data logging.
This can be done by either a site visit or remote com-
mand using SpectraCom software and the DIP switch.
The solenoid to close or open (when applicable) can
be energized by command from a remote location in
order to change the pipeline valve position. This event is
recorded in the audit log. If required, the solenoid(s) can
be de-energized at the end of each actuator stroke, as is
the case for Gas/Hydraulic operators. The LineGuard
2100 can be congured to provide a solenoid lockout fea-
ture to safeguard against remote manual re-opening of
the valve after a major event. For further protection the
LineGuard 2100 does not have any automatic opening
capability.
The LineGuard 2100 includes safeguards to prevent
unwarranted pipeline valve movement due to internal cir-
cuit faults, power faults, power surges or unnatural
destruction such as lightning or immersion.
The LineGuard 2100 Electronic Linebreak Detection Sys-
tem is a self-contained pipeline monitoring and linebreak
protection device intended to be installed at a pipeline
valve site and is designed to provide data acquisition and
supervisory control of a single valve actuator. The Line-
Guard 2100 guards your pipeline in three ways rate of
pressure drop, low pressure protection and high pressure
protection. Further, it records data for future analysis.
Archival Data Storage
Six types of archival logs are stored in the battery
backed 128-K memory of the Lineguard.
Audit Logs This log contains old and new values for
changes to any congurable item including time of change
of parameter and date of changed parameter. The Line-
Guard 2100 can store up to 100 operator/audit logs
Alarm Logs This log contains a complete summary
of all alarm or error conditions affecting measurement,
including each alarm type and the date and time of the
alarm, and the alarm status i.e. active or cleared, current
value and the limit value exceeded. The LineGuard 2100
can store up to 200 alarm logs.
Minor Pressure Log A minor pressure log consists of
date and time at the start of a Minor Event followed by 60
pressure values. A minor pressure log proceeds until all 60
values have been recorded even if the condition returns to
normal. This log can store up to 100 records before data is
overwritten.
Minor ROD Log Same as previous log except rate of
pressure values are logged.
Major Pressure Log The major pressure log consists
of date and time at the start of a Major Event followed by
30 pressure values before the major event and 30 pressure
values after the event. A major pressure log proceeds until
all 60 values have been recorded. The Lineguard stores
one Major Pressure log.
Major ROD Log Same as previous log except rate of
pressure values are logged.
Time Delay
The LineGuard 2100 has a selectable Event Duration
period, congurable from 30 seconds to 5 minutes. The
Event Duration delay safeguards against false closure due
to intermittent pressure surges or drops.
The LineGuard 2100 offers selectable solenoid deactiva-
tion control at end of stroke. This is available for both the
valve open or valve close commands and is congurable up
to 5 minutes.
Hardware
Pressure Transducer
A temperature compensated transducer, which will corre-
spond with the line pressure ranges to 5,000 psig, is mount-
ed inside the enclosure. An optional pressure transducer is
available for the Lineguard but must be externally mounted
away from the enclosure.
Solenoid Valve
The standard LineGuard 2100 is supplied with one intrin-
sically safe solenoid valve, manifold mounted with the coil
and valve body inside the enclosure. As an option, the Line-
guard 2100 may be specied with an additional solenoid
valve for local or remote opening commands. The solenoid
is rated for a uid and ambient temperature range of -40C
to +60C (-40F to +140F)
